King was a news paper correspondent in the Russian-Japanese war. War correspondents have all the fun of battle with ' some of its risks. One nij;ht around the camp fire if they have camp fires any more lie made a bet that he could walk 56,000 miles in seven years, through every continent of the earth, making his living as he went, without bogging, borrowing or stealing. From that time in May, 1905 he had "legged' it through many lands, China, Corea, Manchuria, Siberia, Russia, Austria, Germany, Switzerland, France, England and Canada. In April, 1909, ahead ofghis '. schedule, he was bound east from Seattle, across the Uni ted States walking on the roadbed of the Northern Pacific Railway Company. Near Miles City, -Montana, he met another traveler, who, also oa a wager was walking west, from St. Paul to Seattle, and the two compared notes and experiences as Peary and Cook might have done had they met at the North Pole. , To their mutual surprise, ' they discovered that they were both wearing the Cot zlan "Health and Walk Easy" Shoe. The west bound traveler had got his in St. Paul before starting, and King, his in Spokane, on the ' recommendation of a local dealer. When King reached St. Taul, on the 21st of June, ' 1909, with his feet and his shoes in good condition, he gave the shoes to C. Webster of Muskogee, Okl., Is In Omaha, visiting his brother, John R. Web ster. Mr. Webster wus formerly a resi dent of Omaha, but has become enamored of the attractions of the state made fa mous by Governor Haskell. 'We are deeply Interested In this new campaign for Improved navigation of the rivers," said Mr. Webster. "The Arkansas river flows by Muskogee In a wider and deeper volume than the Missouri boasts at Omaha or Kansas City, and we expect within a short time to have a line of boats running from our city to Little Rock, Ark. We now have one steamer at Muskogee, but It Is not In aatlve commission as yet. 'People In this section and elsewhere seem to think Oklahoma City is the great town of our state, but that Is not so, en tirely. Muskogee has doublet) Its popula tion In four years, and within the next next five years we expect our city to out strip all the others. We are In the center of the greatest oil and gas belt In the country, and our wells produce a better grade of oil than Pennsylvania. Then we have a great climate that attracts people from less favored sections, and we are bound to grow. "We will be gruatly surprised down In Oklahoma If the state does not go repub lican at the next election. The trouble and the bickerings brought about through dem ocratic Incapacity have had their effect on the thinking people, and the result Is pretty Bure to bu an overturning In the political complexion of the state."
