CHICAGO, Nov. 9. Argentine advices
and a marked falling off In the movement
In the southwest prompted urgent buying
of wheat here today, resulting in net gains
at the close of T4'o2o. - Coarse- grains and

Rhorts wero active bidders for December
-wheat and that option displayed relatively
greater strength than the more dlHtant
month, the range on the nearby delivery
being between $1.02V and $1.04Val.04'4. The
market closed with prices almost at the
top, final quotations on December being
$1 04A. Combined receipts today at Kau
nas City and St. Louis were naarly lOO.OUO

sponding day last week and country offer
ings In the aouthwest wera reported ex
tremely light The movement; In the north
west, on tha- other hand, continued on a
liberal acale. but the large receipts aeemed
to have little'' effect on the market here.
The corn market was firm. .The market

have been a feature of stock market deal

it la the contention of the professional
operiitors that a period ot quieiude is de
signed by the finaiiclhl powers which have
foMercd the prolonged speculative rise In
the market. For this purpose, repressive
measures appear upon signs of any con
siderable movement in el; her diiection. An
advance in prices develops Felling orders
on nn upward acale, which early discour
aged attempts to advance prices. Any
considerable decline In prices, on the othtr
hand, uncovers orders to buy at each mc-
cessive downward stage. 1 he effect Is to
hold prices In equilibrum and to discourage
the purely trading operations, which ie
based on ths chance of w:de and sudden
fluctuations In either direction.
More attention was given today to money
market developments than to the stock
market. The further rise In the sterling
exchange rats at Paris pointed to a movu-
mcnt of capital from Paris to London
which is helping to revive the situation at
the latter point.
The continued demand for foreign ex
change here kept alive the supposition that
additional gold shipments might be com
manded by London, although none was
announced. In view of the slender pro
portions of the bank surplus reserve shown
bv the Saturday bank statement, the op
eratlon or these various forces or aepietion
disinclined speculative borrowers to extend
their obligations to the money market.
Yesterday's reports of large buying of
copper for export had lost their effect on
the copper Industrials, and the general
market lucked that sustaining Influence.
The persistent pressure on Pennsylvania
since the announcement of stock subscrip
tion rights to stockholders makes a bad
augury for the reception to the tender to
further efforts to raise capital, which will
be required In large amounts In the near
future. New Y'ork Central moved In sym
pathy with Pennsylvania. It was not until
late In the day that the dragging tendency
of tho market turned Into positive weak
ness, when the money rate ran up to 64

New York Capitalist Gets Judgmenl
for $552,000 in Famous Mis
souri Case.
KANSAS CITY. Nov. -Bernaru J
Burke, a New York capitalist wa awarded
a Judgment Ot $552,000 agnlnat St. CUir
county, Missouri. In the federal court hert
last night, beciie that county In 170
floated bond for the Le's ft Neosho
railway, which was never built.
When the bond wei-e" Issued the offlcei
of St. Clair county thought the railroad
would be built. Mr. Purke owned about
$-00,000 of the county's bond Issuiinee, and.
after hearing the history of the case, the
court held he was entltien to a Judg
ment for the full amount with Interest.
The controversy over
county railroad rase hns
litigation. All the power
States court was used
the St. Clair
caused emtio
of the, Colled
In an effort to
collrct from the county. The people elected
county judges who refused to obey the
courts' orders and more than fifteen county
Judges served Jail sentence for contempt
of court. The men received nelr regular
salary while In Jail.
SHEEP None of yesterday s bullish en
ergy could be detected in the sheep barn
this morning, despite the fact that today's
run was rather meager a compared with
previous Tuesdays. In the neighborhood
of S.60O head were received thi morning
a compared with 16.000 head it Tuesday
and 20.400 head a year tin.
The character, a well as the volume, of
today' run Indicates that the rang sup
ply is almost exhausted. Quality a a rule
was common and the killing end of most
strings were decidedly small. In fact
there were hardly enough good killers on
sale to afford atithlng like a broad test
of the market.
A a result packers did not evince much
Interest at any time and trading wa
rather quiet, with prices little different
from yesterday. A sprinkling of fed stuff
was Included in both yetserdav s and to
day's offerings and everything In this line
nas sola very wen. borne lea western
lambs brought $7.26 today. It must be re
membered, however, that packers Invaria
bly discriminate against grassy-fed stook
that Is "fed" In name only, and the sharply
higher trend of values this week must
not be mistaken for a bid for this class of
supplies.
ine reeder trade today presented no new
features ot consequence. With the closing
of the range season many Job-lot ship
ments are showing up at market and the
keen edge to recent demand Is becoming
a trifle dull. Inquiry for the more suitable
kinds continues vigorous, however, and
most bunches are selling at good, steady
figures.
