Wheat prices dropped to new levels today on renewed liquida tion In the '1eeemUtir delivery, but made a complete recovery nhd closed lo lower to io higher eomparwl With final figures of the prevluUaj seNHinu. Corn and outs closed steady and provision firm. Trading til the wheat Ttt Tvas dull during the first hour arid although sentiment was hearlah no. great weakness was apparent. The markeu thn slumped sharply on gen eral proll ' taking, prompted by liberal sales of the' Lteceiubar delivery by a lead ing elevator Interest. . This selling brought out numerous "slop-losaVl ordeia, the ex ecution of which caused additional weak ness. Late, in the dav however, shorts covered freely, resulting In a strong tone at the finish. The range for the day on December was between tl.OlVi and 81.02. The murket closed at almost the top notch, with December at 11:02. Corn was affected 'by the late bulge In wheat and closed moderately firm, with prices shude to boe th previous final figurea. Oats followed the course of wheat and cotn and the close was a shade to c higher. Continued light receipts of live hogs throughout the west Inspired a renewed buying of provisions. Total receipts of hogs at principal wefitein ceiilotw were more than 2H.0UU head -less than the figures for the corresponding day a ear ago. Price at the close were V'laLx- lower. The leading lututes vantteu as follows: I NEW YORK, Nov. 4. -Today's stork mar- ! kat was a two-sided affair. In th-it some I stocks were strong and some were weak. I The great body of securities, however, was Inert and the price movement was llstleos and Insignificant. A recurrence of strength In I'nlted Htatea Steel and a congestion of practically the whole activity of the later market In that security did not have a favorable effect on speculation. Points or strength were scattered through a miscellaneous list of specialties, some of them decidedly obscure and seldom appear ing In the transactions of the stock market. The railroad stocks generally were dull and some of the high priced Industrials were inclined to be heavy. This was true of t'nlied States Bieel In the enrly part of the dav, as well as of Amalgamated Copper and the railroad equipment stocks. The operations that made stocks strong from time to time were gretly concen trated In their execution and apparently In their origin. The steel movement was connected with a revival of reports that the effort to list the stock on the Purls Bourse was about to be crowned with suc cess. The fall of 2 points In New York Central following yusterday's news of a new Issue of stock to the extent of 25 per cent of the present volume were In line with, sim ilar action of Pennsylvania snd New York, New Haven & Hartford, when additional stock issueo were announced bv those companies. There ware fresh reports today of con ditions In foreign money markets that were not reassuring. It was reported that an other advance In the nfficlnl rate of the Imperial Bank of Germany had come Into discussion again. The unchanged Rank of Kngland rate made a cheerful Impression on speculators, but the decline In condition of that Insti tution as well as of the Hank of France Indicated that the hoped for recuperation at those points was not eoing on. Sterling exchange hpre declined sharply. Ilonds were heavy. Total salt s, par value, t4.o62.OilO. I'nlted States 4s, registered, de clined H Per cent on call. Still re ceipts arc more than twice ns large a for the corresponding day of last year, when the run was extremely small. There. were a good many short red cattle among today's offerings of beef steers, and tht trade on UiRt kind was rather dull, buyers being wide apart In their view, so much so that It was largely a matter of chance Just where cattle of that description would sell. On the other hand, the supply of strictly good killers was small and the market was firm on that kind. The market on cows and heifers did not show any very material change, sales men as a rule quoting lt as about steady with yesterday. Stockers and feeders were In fair de mand at about the name prices as pre vailed yesterday. The supply was not largu and desirable kinds moved off quits freely, the same as they have all ths week.
