NEW YORK STOCKS AND BONDS Quiet Which Authorities Have Been Advising ii in Evidence. CLIL1EIN0S MAKE NEW RECORD Tetal for Day A bote Sftf Hun dred Million Nome Diversion I Toward Minor Industrial. NEW YORK. Nov. S.-The quiet condi tion In the speculation which financial au thorities have been advising for several weeks past, was In evidence today. It was siippiisid to be due In part to delay in re turn from election day holiday visible on the part of the brokerage fraternlly. There was sufficient uncertainty acknowledged In the money outlook to account for the halting tendency In the market's activity. The call money rate did not rise again to Ihe 5 per cent rate touched late on Mon day, but the figures of the clearing house exchanges for that day gave a hint of the special demand on the banks. The set tlements effected between the clearing house banks for that dny amounted to tlw prodigious total of t73H.4t'1.54. The nearest approach ever made to those figures was on January 3, 1906, when exchanges at the clearing house were reported at SH, SS4.S90. Call money In that week went to l per cent at the Stock exchange and the daily sales of stock averaged nearly 1.600,000 shares In the present Instance stock market operations were quiet and the banks do not report any extraordinary transactions, to swell the figures of the exchanges, be yond the demands Incident to the Novem ber 1 payments, and .possibly, some antic ipatory business prompted by the election day holiday to follow. Ourlng October clearing house exchanges ran high through out the country, In many Instances consti tuting actual records at Important points. This Is but one of the evidences of the expanding trade atclvlty of the country and the consequent demand for money. Abroad, there was an easing of the private discount rate in London today which had some effect on foreign exchnnge rates here; but In ParlH the private discount rate stif fened and the exchnnge rata on London tan off. There wa some dlvertdon of speculative Interest to minor Industrial stocks today. This was fostered to some extent by the slight response hitherto made by the steel Industrials to the disproportionate ad vance in United States Steel. . The largo orders for new equipment now being placed by the railroads also helped the stocks of companies In those Industries. The cop per stocks were helped by the reports of larv) sales of copper recently made. The local metal market was called film today, but In Ixmdon the price of copper war rant declined. Pennsylvania showed fur ther unfavorable effect from the decision to Issue Us new stock to stockholders at as low a figure as par. The subscription rights for the new stocks were quoted In the outside market at a figure which of fered a profit In buying the rights against sales of the stock on the Stock exchange. The strength In spots was emphaslr.ed with the progress of the day, but did not per meate the whole list at any time. Bonds were heavy. Total sales, par value, $4.24.000. United States 2s and the 3s, coupon, declined H per cent on call. Following were the sales and lange of prices on the Stock exchange today: 8uif. Hixh. 1iw. Clone. and Utile chango occurred except In Amnl gamuled. which wn advanced sharply on Wnll stier-t buying. The njirket closed dull. Wheat I lee. May July Corn-. I i-C. Ma v July' mis I iec. May.
