The Omaha Woman's club will utaui lis
present quarter at the Flrit Congrega
tlonal church, having reconsidered It de
termination to move. Thl was decided at
Monday afternoon's meeting, which was
the largest of the year. Several other
plans wer considered, but none nv the
requirements of the eiub as well as tho
present quarters.
The club, through Its educational com
mittee, had a definite recommendation to
make regarding candidate for election to
the School board. C. E. Parson, Sophus
Nehlc, Henry I. Plumb and Charles B.
Courtney were the candidates endorsed
by the committee, and the Women were
urged to vote.
"This is not politic," said the chairman
of the conjmittee, Mrs. A. K. Gault. '"It
Is our children." Another speaker ex
plained for the benefit of women who had
no children of school age that any per
sonal 'property, a watch, a sewing machine
or even a dog upon which a woman paid
taxes entitled her to vote.
By unanimous vote the club wll petition,
the board of the Nebraska Federation of
Women's clubs to exempt It from following
tho newly made law that all clubs hold
ing membership In the federation shall
hold their annual election of officers in
January. This plan would be a serious
inconvenience to the Omaha club, and a
reconsideration of the new amendment to
the federation- constitution will be askfd
at the next annual convention.
The program hour was devoted to a talk
by Rabbi Frederick Cohn on "The Psycho
logical Point, Robert Browning," under the
auspices of the psychology department,
Mr. Mary Newton presiding.
Booker T. Washington will give a compli
mentary address before the social acienca
department of the Woman's club Saturday
afternoon at 3 o'clock In the club parlors.

Mrs. Minnie A. Watkina, chairman of the
legislative committee of the General Fed
eration of Women's Clubs, has Issued the
following notice to club women and club
presidents:
The legislative committee 'again take
his means of bringing to your attention
the pecesslty of placing before your clubs
the importance of the federal legislation
for which our organization stands pledged,
nd for which we should use our in-
uence.
The measures are the same that we
placed before you last winter through the
medium of the Bulletin; namely, a national
board of health, a children's federal
ureatl bill, and the revoking of the
Hetch Hetchy Valley" grant to the city
of San Francisco. We aik you as presidents
to present this business to your delegates
In convention.
Printed matter may be Secured by ad
resslng members of congress, which will
enable club to gain fact regarding the
status of these measures. During the com-
ug session of congress thl committee will
notify clubs when the bills are before the
house or senate, when we shall need your
co-operation if this organization is to as
sist In influencing constructive legislation.
for our strength lies wholly In the full ex
pression of the Individual club member.
It la our hope that during the fall and
early winter presidents of clubs will take
to their members this matter for discus
sion, that they may be properly impressed
with the possible benefit to be derived
when such measures have been enacted
into federal laws.
Citizens in our various states cannot be
wholly protected by their state laws in
'public health" unless they are strength
ened through a federal law. Likewise, the
child labor" question will be freed from
many of its complications, and the in
justice done to children through ignorance
will be lessened through a children's bureau
for scientific research, and the giving out
of all knowledge gained thereby.
States are not sufficient unto themselves
in these, larger measures, therefore the
legislative committee of the general fed
eration begs you to make place for thla
most Important branch of the work during
your state conventions, in order that clubs
may know their responsibility as. members
of the federation.
A Tolmrrs t'rsmilr,
OMAHA. Oct. 30,-To the Editor of the
Dee: I notice that the Indies of the
Women's Christian Temperance union have
arranged to begin a g-tieral crus.ule upon
the use of tobacco. In the southern states
which recently adopt9 prohibit Ion, the
agitation against tobacco has already be
gun, and this, too, In the area where the
cultivation of tobacco Is one of the great
industries. This In another Inst.tncc show
ing that prohibition fanatics never hesitate
to attack the commercial and , Industrial
Interests directly, aul if they succeed In
getting a state to adopt prohibition, It
soon puts a damper upon all lines of busi
ness.
I also read that the ladles of the Women's
Christian Temperance union are pUnnlng
to make war upon tobacco In .all the
states. They will not only try to suspend
th -sale of the weed, but they will try to
make unlawful Its use. The subject af
fords a jnew cause to espouse and that Is'
what the masculine ladles must hive. In
Ijhe Omaha Issue of October 14, and com
menting on the report of the secretary of
the National Tobacconist association made
to that body recently, the prohibition org.in
say: "On what docs Mr, Grau rely for the
defense of his traffic? (meaning tohsccm

pression of the traffic would make on.
crop less, one article of commerce less
much property would be rendered valueless
and many people would be thrown out of
employment. True, but the same may be
said of the liquor traffic." They here ad
mit that "much property would he rendered
valueless" using their own words; the de
struction of one crop and one article of
commerce, and the throwing out of employ
ment of thousands of people who have
learned thla trade to seek employment in
other .avenues for which they may bo un
fitted. Quite an admission for our prohibi
tion friends.
When the prohibitionists single out n
line of business for attack, aa In the case
of tho crusade against tobacco, they are
taunted with allusions to their Inconsis
tency In making a discrimination and Hiuf
they are goaded on to agitate for a strlci
Puritan Hahbath and a closing; down of hi.
lines of business on Sunday. The prohibi
tionists nre agitating this latter Isoue in

that In l'ensacola, Florida, recently:

With Eggs at Thirty-Five
Cents Look What Happens
And eggs are 35 cents, too.
The car came to an abrupt stop near
Vinton street park. It was so violent that
the girl with the Inverted washtub hat
now wishes that the fat man in front of
her had been hanging onto a strap. The
"gent" with the long ears wishes his side
flappers hadn't been mistaken by the
puffing fat man for a means of support.
"What' the matter?" sang the chorus.
The brake were grinding fearfully.
"Grrrrrrrrr. Whrrrrrrrrr, Ring."
Down the window panr ran slimy, slip
pery, yellowish streaks of hen fruit of the
antediluvian, Methuselah age. It was yel
ler and It was green. But that is not all.
It was sulphurous and chloric. The hen
that laid those eggs is no more, but that
IS mere matter of history. Two more eggs
hit the transom above end there -was
gentle dripping from the roof to the floor.
Tho windows didn't break; the eggs did.
The motorman and conductor had taken
to their heels. Soon they returned. The
conductor wan smiling.'.
"It's just a Hallowe'en prank," he said.
"Hut gee, I'll have a .tub Mushing those
windows," he roared.
"But why do you laugh?" asked a pas
senger. "Get on to the motorman," he gurgled.
"Ain't he a sight? It's a co(d night, too.
Oh mamma; those kids certainly nailed
him." ' '
The man in front was dunging his gong
and peering Intently a lieu d. He was m
his coat sleeves. His "ooat: hung ouj of
the window of the vestibule off, to leeward.
