lar duties. It never skipped a beat While
the keen surgical needles were passing
through Its quivering walls. Between beats
the surgeon assisting would stoop over the
patient and remove the blood that con

steady beat never faltered. Finally the
twelfth stitch waa taken and the trapdoor
of flesh and bone that had been lifted was
closed down. The man waa still alive.
And Michael Law lens continued to live and

few days ago ha was discharged from the
hospital, a sound man so far as the surgi
cal staff waa able to determine.

Heretofore It was understood that a mai,
might' have his 'brain pierced by a rifle
bullet, his stomach riddled by a gastric
nicer or losa both limbs close up to the
trunk In a railrbad accident and yet live,
but H bad been held that the piercing of J
the heart meant death. Immediate, instau- j
taneous. Tha Greeks, who ware the fathers
of medicine, looked upon the heart as the
seat ot the mind, and looked, upon its in
jury as fatal. The discovery, of. the circu
lation by Dr. Harvey only confirmed the
fact that tha heart, was the, moat vital of
tha organs. Experiment have shown that
practically all the brdio may l removed
and yet If respiration, be kept, up In some
artificial manner tita aaaj-t will go steadily

the river for a mile or so before he wai
picked up and brought axhui'e. Their was
considerable delay In getting him l.ito the
hands of the men at the City hospital,
but an operation was finally decided upon
after his arrival there.
A portion of the Kpllntered skull wau
removed and th brain explored for the
ueavy calibered bullet. Jl was found
deeply embedded In the soft tissues of the
lobe of the brain. He w as an old maa and
the shock of the wound and the period of
Inattention while he was drifting on the
river had been a great hindrance, but he
is still making a fight for life. As to the
probable effect of such an Injury on hi

medical men aru unable to say. The must
of the really ticklish operations have to
be done on the spur of the moment's need.
A short ' while ago two men driving
across one of the car lines was struck by
a patting cur and hurled many feet Into
the utreet. One of the men sustained a
fearfully crushed skull. When he was de
livered at the operating room the prellnil-
nary examination showfu that a portion
of the brain had bien lacerated and was
oozing out at a lagged aperture In the
skull wall. This was removed by the sur

Three months ago Kdward Schneider, of
No. 3tt!& u Ferdinand avenue, waa point
ing a smukestack. Because of some defect
In his rigging, the scaffold where he was
working slipped and hurled him to the
ground, forty feet below. When tie was
picked up apparently dead and hurried to
the hospital, it was found that four of the
vertebra , composing the spinal column
were la a frightfully shattered condition.
Xot a physician la the Institution felt that
he could even live a week, much less re
cover. Several operations, however, were
decided upon In a sort of a forlorn Jiope
of keeping th man alive.
Three portions of as many vertebrae
Were removed in a splintered condition
during thee operations, and the rsan be
gan to steadily get better. When hs was
first brought la be was paralysed from
tha lower dorsal region down. He waa un
able to move either of his lower limbs
ha the slightest degree. Finally It waa
seen that the processus of nature were r
placing the missing pieces of bone by a
sort of fibrous tissue. Then it waa de
cided to place the man witn the t broken
back In a plaster cast and let him return
to his home, as his general physical con
dition was good.
A few days ago he left the hospital with
his bark bound up tightly and supported
by a plaster cast weighing about fifteen
pounds. He had lain in th same ward for
the three months that have e!spsed since
the accident and was glad to .jet Sway
frum the place that the must enthusiastic
of the Burgeons had thought would prove
to be tils deathbed. He walked unsup
ported to a curriuge and was driven to the
home that he hud not seen for a fourth
of a year. For another three months he
must wear the cast of plaster day and
night, and then he will return 'to the hos
pital to be measured and fitted up with a
permanent steel brace.
William M. Forteoiis, of St. Louis, re
cently underwent, in a measure, the same
tortures of surgery that Ciara Morris de-
scribes so telling In her memoirs. 11 was
spared th tw inge of the moxa, that fiend
ish idea of lit Japanese surgeons tiiai
the American and Europeans seemed to
think would be helpful In th treatment
of cases of eplnal affection. In th case
of Porteous, years of pain had made hlin
practically - Insensible to vrdlnary agonies
A growth forming in and near the spinal
cord was gradually shutting off all sense
of touch and power of movement in hia
arm and hand. But, despite the loss of
touch, there was no diminishing of th
power to fel pain.
In an out-of-town bopltal. one of th
most famous In th world, he submitted
to an operation. Th back waa incised Just
above the Una of the shoulder blade's low
er end, and th vertebrae were laid bare.
Three of them ware found to have been
affected, and portions of them were re
moved. Then th spinal nerve that lad
to th affected arm was found to be de
generating, and another and even more
aertous incision was mad. Th greal
nerv that darts out fixwa th aid of the
spinal column and looks after th doings
of Hi arm was followed from Its point
of origin across the back, over ttie bboulder
and down th aria almost to the wrist.
It was cut to a dosen places, and aaiall
bits of affected while tlu wer takes
out.
To the anifiltlated tb Idea ot a nerve
ever reuniting after it is one severed
seems ridiculous. Its tissue seems so dif
ferent from tbos of the muscles or the
bona cells. But in the course of time thesu
white and gleaming tissues will knit to
gether. From four to six weeks are re
