Cotton Market.
NEW YORK, Oct.. .-COTTON-Ths
cotton market was very nervous and unset
tied, but active months were at th bast
prloe of the day at the close, with the tone
firm net 7 points hltther to 8 points lower,
The opening was steady, but I'd 7 points
lower and during the first half hour prices
sold oti to a net loss of 6(BU points under
realizing and local bear pressure, encour
aired by disappointing- cables,' a smaller
English spot business and a rather bear
lsh estimate of the season's requirements
of American Cotton by the prominent Emr
llsh authorities. A renewal of support
from southern and western bulls caused
rally of within 2 to 3 points of Jsst night's
closing, during the middle of the morning,
but big selling orders reached the ring
shortly after midday and led ,to rumoi
that the people who had been trying to
force the market above 3 . cents ware
abandoning their position. Talk of this sort
brought In more general offerings and en
couraged trade aggressiveness 011 the part
or tne local Dears, as a result or whloh
ths local market broke to a. net loss of U'fi
is points during the middle or ths after
noon. This represented a decline of be
tween 20 snd 84 points from yesterday
high records, but as soon as local sellers
started to cover the market became, very
firm again, and the nee, months sold at
the highest points of the day on rumors
of a -bullish national sinners report.
December showed leading strength and an
absence of any Important sellers. That
position advanced from lS.tJOc to 13.80o and
closed at 13.79c bid, or within 1 point of
the highest price reached this season,
Southern spot markets officially reported
eariy were l-iso higher to l-32e lower.
There was leas urgent demands from Oa
tobcr spots, but there were also Claims
that mills were big buyers on the decline.
The weather was unsettled, but not suffl
ciently so to create much sentiment.

HOGS Packers have evidently called a
halt In the downward revision of hog prices..
Today's trade differed very little from that
of the previous two days of this week In
anv respect. Prices on bulk of droves were
substantially the same, range wal narrow
as usual and quality showed no apparent
lniprovement or deterioration.
Receipts were rather light today, con
Biaun of approximately 2.800 head. Both
packers and snippers were pxssably anxious
for supplies and the general trade was
comparatively brisk. Buying activity, how
ever, was not of a clamorous nature by any
means, and anything like a positive ad
vance in prices was out of the question.
Eastern advices gave little encouragement
as well and early wires from southern
points were somewhat lower.
It might be well to' call attention to the
kind of receipts that are being marketed
at this time In view of the shortage of hogs
throughout th country. A large portion
of receipts oonstst of grssay and hslf-fln-ifhed
sows In fact, on shipper stated this
morning that the average ratio was. about
fifteen sows to one barrow. ' :
Tops registered at $7.46 aa compared with
the same tops of yesterday and Monday.
A week ago outside sales reached $7.8744.
Bulk sold at $7.3521.40 today," or practically
in th same notches of th lost two days.
Bulk a week ago sold at $7.&tt3r7.66.

CATTLE Receipts were -fairly liberal for
a Wednesday and the character of the of
ferings was much the same aa it has been
recently. '
Beef steers were very scarce, either corn-
feds or rangers and anything suttabl for
the dressed beef men sold at prtc.es that
compared very favorably with yesterday.
There Was a raft of common horned stuff
on. the market thai Sellers found 4ather
nara to move even at somewhat shadea
prices and the general trade was slow
throughout. ; , tr
About 100 loads of cows snd heifers were
on sale this morning and, with th usual
breed demand, the market presented no
nw features, prices being about steady
with yesterday.
Business In Blockers and feeders was In
clined to be rather slow. Fresh supplies
were liberal and the country demand ha
been rather disappointing so fsr this week.
Heavy cattle, in particular, were slow sale
at unevenly lower prices and the same was
true of the common lightweight grsdes.
Fair to medium lightweight steers con
tinued in active ' demand at good, firm
figures. 1

moderate this morning, , only abutit 19.000

days' run 79.000 head, as compared with
86,000 head for the same three days of last
week and 71.000 head for the corresponding
period of last year.
texteraay's market closed in excellent
condition, ' Practically everything' was sold
before' the end of the session at prices that
were iiiny steady to soms Higher. . i ne de
mand I for good fat lambs was especially
urgent and anything In this line that pos
sessed kill usually . commanded the
greater advance, values In spots appearing
as mucn as ivaitc nigner tnan Monday.
Feeders- were In active request also, and
the general - market on all classes was
easily strong; as compared . with that of
the previous day.
Today's opening trade again bore out the
reputation of South Omaha as a Mecca for
feeder sheep .buyers. The usual large num
ber of country buyers was on hand with
good orders trt fill, and inquiry was brisk
In every part of the barn for desirable thin
stuff and suitable half-fat offerings.
Prices, as a general rule, were fully steady
and the undertone to the market strone.
In the killer branch nf the trade nothing
new of consequencs happened. The In
quiry nil fairly broad, but actual trading
was rather quiet at th outset. The qual
ity of the supplies was not as good as yes
terday, however, and this feature may hav
cauxed the rather indifferent tone to the
demand. On tbe other hand, there was no
apparent tendency to bear the market end
figures on most ssles ruled firm with yes
terday's close.
