There wa some venlng-up of accounts

desire to see the complexion of the bank
statement also restricted activity. Stock
exchange loans made on Friday are car
ried over until Monday, so that the call

for most accommodations were below 6 per
cent.
The distinctive feature of the week waa
that of the aggregate sales of all stocks for
the week of fc.TM.itni shares, 1.037,800 share

maintained its prominence today, selling
down over a point at the opening and
sharing In the gradual tendency toward
recovery In the whole market. The Amer

ther reduction by one-third of the surplus
of Idle freight car.
The bank statement proved a revelation
of the prodigious Inter-market operation
that must have been going on during the
week. The loan contraction in the com-

CATTLE Receipt of cattle this
lng were very (mall, but for the week they
have been large, both as compared with
recent weeks and aa compared with a year
ago. Still the demand has been so good
that arrivals have been none too large to
meet the requirements of the trade. The

Beef steers have been In exceedingly
good demand all the week and In spite of
the large receipts the trade haa been active
every aay, so that arrivals have met with
very ready sale. The market as a whole
has been In a . good healthy and entirely
satisfactory condition ' s viewed from
a seller's standpoint. At the close of the
week prices on the better grades of west
ern cattle are, If anything, a shade stronger
than m week ago, while the less dsslrable
kind are at least steady,
What ha been said regarding btef iteer
would apply to the market on cows and
heifers. The demand for cattle of that
description ha buen good throughout the
week, and at the cluse prices are fully
steady, If not a little stronger than one
week ago.
Feeders and stock cattle started out very
strong, being considerably higher on M011
day and Tuesday. In fact, they were so
high that buyers showed more or less re
luctance to pay thuin. The result was that
later on In the week as receipts became

Hence.
New Tork has Just celebrated the third
century of the discovery of the Hudson
river and the first century of the advent of
steam upon that stream. The Mississippi
valley will soon have an opportunity to
have a river centennial. In 1811 A steam
boat built by Fulton, Livingston and Nicho
las J. Roosevelt, the granduncle ot the
twenty-fifth president ot ths United States,
waa launched at Pittsburg and went down
the Ohio and the Mississippi to New Or
leans. It was named sifter that city and
entered the trafflo between that point and
Natches.
The New Orleans was ths first steamboat
which appeared west of the Alleghenlea.
The centenary of Its advent will come two
years hence. All the big towns In the
Mississippi watershed ought to have some
sort of observances at that time to com
memorate this event. St. Louis and New
Orleans, as the largest towns on ths big
river, must havs some exercises which will
be appropriate to the occasion. The place
which 1S07 occupies In the navigation annals
of the eastern states and of the world Is
filled by 18U for the people who reside on
western waters.
It was 1W7 when the first steamboat ap
peared at St. Louis, 1819 was here when the
Missouri was entered by the new motive
power and 1823 had arrived when the steam
boat reached Fort Snelllng. In the. present
Minnesota, near the head of navltAlioti 011
the Mississippi. Nevertheless, 1911 will be a
date-mark which ought to secure recogni
tion from all the Important towns on the
Mississippi and its principal trlbutaiies.
The primitive craft which steamed down
the Ohio and the Mississippi In 1811 was the
advance courier of the new order. It soon
put the flatboat out of business, nnde
transit through the west's magnificent dis
tances easier than It had been previously,
and gave a spur to Immigration to the
Mississippi valley from the Atlantic sea
board and Europe which had large social
and political consequences for the country.
The deep waterway champions will, In 191L
be able to utilize, in a decidedly practical
way, the story of the career of the pioneer
steamboat west of the Alioghenles, Ht.
Louis Globe-Democrat.

144,000 head Is the larfiat ever received on
this market.
Yesterday's closing trade was rather slow
and draetgy, owing to the unwillingness of
buyers to load up with supplies at the
latter end of the week. Prices suffered no
material break, whatever, and while In
some cases, values appeared to be a shade
asler than at the opening, the hulk of
receipts changed hands at quotably steady
prices. Only a few strings were carried
over till today, mostly feeder toek.
The general market has acted very
creditably under the big runs of the psst
few days. No decline of consequence is
noticeable, rave perhaps on fat lambs, the
medium and fair grades being almost 26c
lower than last Haturday. Really choice
lambs would probably not sell over lualic

killers and feeders has been very broad,
the big end of each day's run being sold
on the day of arrival. Killing sheep are
closing right around 10c lower with feeder
sheep steady to easier and suitable feeding
