"I will go and see Vivian tonight and

clipped It out. When the store closed that
evening he went to her home and as she
was willing, they went to look at the

made the bargain and paid $100 down.
One year after this they were to be mar

About two months before their wedding
day Mr. Howard, sr., failed, and he waa
left almost penniless. He decided to fol

besides selling his costly residence and
buying a much smaller place, farther out.
The next time Frank saw Vivian she
said: "What would have happened If I
had not made you go to work?" He re
plied. "What would have happened If It
hadn't been for The BeT" She meekly
said, "WhatT"

ROVER IS CLEARED BY HIS
GOOD OLD HONEST FACE
Dp Condemned by Neighbors Ac
quitted Wbes He Appears .
Before the Judge.
The judge and a large number of the
spectators had decided that Rover ougnt
to. be killed. Several very competent wit
nesses hsd testified that Rover was the'
crosses t of dogs. Apparently he had bitten
a large number of his master's : neighbors
kri the Eighteenth and Cass atraets dlstrkl,
and for .no cause whatever. His master,
however, whose name Is 11. B. Kennedy,
could not bear the thought of losing his
pet of years.
. "Please, your honor, may I bring Rover
In, so that you can see him?"
"I should say not," exclaimed the udge,
"If what these people say . is true, . don't
bring Uiat dog m ar my shins."
"But It is not true. Rover never pur
posely harmed anybody in all his life,"
Mrs. Kennedy protested,, "and If you could
see him, your honor "
"He'd chew me up, I suppose."
Several spectators feared that the Judga
was wavering, and showed ail' inclination
to climb upMi the chairs.' This was re
strained, however, until the Judge signed
to an officer to bring in the dog. At that,
those next the uisle shifted uneasily,
blushed, and gut her. d thCir feet under
ihi lr chairs. And then came Rover,
alle had been a beautiful Scotch Collie
once but that was years ago. He waa
very wabbly on his legs and tils tongue
drooped from Jaws nearly toothless, but in
his eyes there waa a gleam of mischief
which a look of innocence, palpably as
sumed, could not conceal.
"Did that dog bite you?" asked the
judge of a witness.
"He he mouthed me, anyhow," he an
swered sheepishly.
"I guess all of you have been, mouthing
me; take Rover home; you're a good dog,
aren't you Rover."
Rover wagged his tail, and seemed to
grin.
