Spanish-Moroccan situation.
of the
NEW YORK. Oct. 4 The stock market
developed uneven atrength after a weak
start today, but the activity dwindled tin-
r the Influence of the sustained firmness
of the call money rate. Call money touched
41 per cent, Friday's high rate, early In
the afternoon. A gradual recession from
the rate due to the periodical money re
quirements of the first of October Is looked
lor ordinarily.
The weekly bank statement, nublished
after the close of business on (.atnrday.
offers the occasion for the conservative
ttltude of lenders. The sutnlus reserve of
the banks is down to the vanishing point
and t lie forces of depletion of sash are
still at work. The substitute treasury
starts the week with a requisition 011 the
banks for fl.7t3,000 and has not a credit
balance at the clearing house this morn
ing. Foreign discount markets showed
mure of the effect of the relaxation after
the October 1 requirements, the private dis
count rate receding a fraction In Berlin.
Russia took the 83.000.000 aold available In
London today following the 83.000,0JO shipped
from there to Egypt on Saturday. The
Foreign exchange market here, therefore
was little affected. In spite of the harder
tone or our local money market. The gov
ernment report on conditions of cotton of
fered small prosiect for an Increase of ex
change from ports of that commodity, the
condition being a low record uercentage
for the season of the year. The principal
stock market Influence, which centered
with the restraint of the money position
was the determined advance In United
States steel. After opening down a point
under the Influence of selling at London,
the stock started upwards and narrowed
Its distance from par to only a shade
more than five points. It was rumored
that the company had purchased l.VOO.OnO of
Its own shares In the market, as It Is priv
ileged to do under Its charter, representing
n outlay of some I'iO.OOU.OUO. This report
and others like it received no official coun
tenance.
New York Central was another conspicu
ous point of strength, feeling the good ef
fect of large Increase In August earnings
and the reports of the enormous car move
ment over the system during September.
Kallrond traffic ofrlcials rrom all sec
tions reported an enlarging merchandise
movement and Increasing need for cars.
The rise In Northern Pacific was based 011
the August earnings.
A good Impression was produced by the
ready sale of a $2.r.O00.0U0 Issue of New
York Telephone bonds, offered in this
country and abroad. Some of the bonds
of Industrial companies rose In sympathy,
but the general bond market was Ir
regular. Total sales par value $o,275,000. United
States bonds were unchanged on call.

CA'i'tlE lteceluts of cattle this morning
were large, 447 cars being reported in, but
they were none too large to supply the very
good demand prevailing at this point.
It was very evident that packers an
wanted beef steers this morning and they
were out In good season looking for sup
plies. The market was fairly active, with
all desirable kinds at least fully steady
with last week. The quality of the cattle
waa not very good, so that sales do not
show up overly well on paper.
cows and heifers were also in gooa ae-
mand and they, as well as beef steers, sold
freely at steady prices. - t.
Buyers ware looking lor gooa reeding
cattle this morning and the better grades
sold very readily at good, strong prices
Even the medium kinds were fully steady.

Declines to Get
off the Ticket
Democratic Candidate for Sheriff
Says He it Going: to Stick
Rig;ht Where He Is.
Slir.EP-The week opened with the most
libel al run of 'lie season and year.
Several shipments were late In arriving
and as Is usually the case on a heavily
supplied mark.t. It takes some little time
to shape tip -receipts so that there was not
enough stock sold In early rounds to put
the marktt on a working basis. The fact
that a large portion of receipts consisted
of common stuff and even trash had a
tendency, as well, toward a slow market.
The usual large percentage of feeder
stock was In evidence and even though
buyers were plentiful, they were bearish
In their views and every Indication pointed
In a lower price level. One or two strings
of feeding wethers changed hands early at
comparatively steady prices, but general
oplnk.n dictated easier values on all classes
of thin stock.
The foellng In killing sheep circles was
also easier. Last week's record receipts were
not productive of very much of a decline,
everything considered, and this morning's
flood run gave packers their opportunity to
seucure concessions. Prospects on choice
killers looked to be about steady, how
ever, since there Is generally a better de
mand for good fat stock, especially when
supply Is somewhat limited. Common
grades and traBhy sold lower during first
rounds.
As the morning progressed, bearish feel
ing became more pronounced and prices on
killing sheep and lambs ranged all the
way from weak to 15c lower, with best
grades steady to eahler.

Feter O. Holaml will not withdrsw from
the democratic list as a candidate for

Holaml even to consldrr the advisability of
his withdrawal.
I'm on to stay." says he. "and t don't
think my connection with the street car
company Is going to hin t me near as mm h
as some folks think It will."
Ted Morrow, the roclallst candidate, and
his friends have been hustling the last
week, with the underlying purpose of hav
ing lloland withdraw and throw his
strength to Morrow, who Is one of the
strikers. The efforts of Morrow and his
cohorts have been backfired by the propo
sition that both Holaml and himself with
draw and permit some good democrat to be
placed on the soulallst ticket, leaving the
nomination for sheriff on the democratic
stilo blank, but this proposition has not
met with anything like a warm reception.
except to draw from old wheelhorses of
the Dahlmanltcs the comment, '"Those so
cialists certainly have their nerve with
them, when they don'4 cast more than a
baker's doicn of votes In the whole
county."
In the meantime the Morrow men are
claiming with lusty lungs that he win
have more votes than Uoland, and, say the
republican wiseacres. It this turns out to
be true, Ed Uralley will have more than
the two of them put together.
