NEW YORK STOCKS AND BONDS
United States Steel Continue! to Hold
Center of Attention.
HEW HIGH BEC0BD IS HADE
EspeelatlOM of Poor Bank Statement
Has Some Restraining Influence
on General Movements
Bond Heavy.
NEW YORK. Oct. I United State Btel
continued to hold th center of speculative
attention In today stock market, but Its
making of further new record prices did
not carry the whole market upwards with
It. Expectation of a poor bank statement
bad some restraining force on the general
movement, but the movement in Lulled
States Steel Itself caused aome feeling of
distrust.
' There Is growing conjecture of some spe
cial development in prospect aside from
the prosperous trade condition to account
for the rapid approach of this 3 per cent
Industrial dividend stock to par. The con
jecture evidently alms to adjust Itself to
the high price of both the preferred and
common stock of United States Steel com
pared with other Industrial stock and th
contrary tendency in the price of the coin
pany'a sinking fund bonds, which have
shown some decline while the stock wer
breaking previous records. A distribution
in the form of a bonus out of the capitali
sation of the Gary plant of the corporation
wag a favorite form of speculative surmise
conoerning steel, a surmise which had no
official countenance to back It. Atchison
also made a new high record with the ap
proach of th dividend meeting.
There were other points of strength In the
list, including the newly listed Pacific coast
telephone stock and the Southern Railroads
the latter, In spite of the apprehension o(
a very poor government report on cotton
condition next week. Pennsylvania was
strengthened by renewed rumor that the
new stock issue with subscription rights to
stockholder might be forthcoming during
October. There were reports that the New
lorK central systems had nanaiea tne
largest number of loaded freight cars dur
lng September of any month in Its history,
but the stock did not respond.
London shipped large amounts of gold to
Egypt and fears of dearer money atfected
the lone of the London stock market. Th
state of the call money market here was
not disclosed. The bank statement at
closed n much heavier cash decrease than
had been Indicated, the actual figure repre
sentluK a shrinkage of .U,7ki.0xi from las
week, i he clearing no .j-c baului contracted
outHtanumg loans Y.j3..skju by the averages
and tin, t:. 700 by the actual showing. The
Increase of $U,b3u,,U0 in tne average loans
reported by institutions over the clearing
house, including trust loinpunleH, shows
how little this sea. lug down of the bank
loans affected the real credit situation.
Bonds were heavy. Total sa.ee. $2.5M.0ue.

have been very scarce and the few dealr-

week ago. Inferior kind, as a matter of
course, are a little weak and dull on some

Cow and heifers hav been good sellers
all tbo week, and price are now about the

not been nough change in the market to
talk about.
The demand for dosirabls stockers and
feeder ha been very good all th ween.
Th attendance of country buyer has been
quit larg and they hav kept supplies
well cleaned up. Price hav been steady
to atrong and, at the close of the week,
the market la safely 10al6o higher than
last week, so far aa th desirable kinds at
concerned. Medium and common kind
hav at least held their own.
