CALL LOAN RATE HIGHER

lsne Advance.
NEW TORK P, Sept. 30. Dealings In
Hocks underwent a decided shrinkage to
daa from tn large volume of yesterday.
The market was dull and sluggish at beRt
and the professional element found diffi
culty In moving prices sufficiently to offer
a profitable medium for trading operations.
The Blackened activity of the ti ailing
was partly due to caution on account of the
October settlements. The amount called
for by th October Interest and dividend
disbursements Is estimated at 3162,000,000
and there was some apprehension that
funds accumulated to meet this require
ment might have been placed In call loan
until needed, and that the recall of these
loans then might dislodge stocks held on
collaterad. The money market gave some
slight evidence of strain from such a cause
today, th call loan rate rising to 4 er
cent, the highest touched In New York
since early In 1908. Declining interior ex
changes Indicate revival of demand on
New York for caah and the subtreasury
continued to withdraw from the banks the
amount for th banking week rising today
to 35.699.000.
Ixndon sold stocks In thla market and
the demand for remittance thus caused
stiffened the foreign exchange rate. Lon
don selling helped to turn prices down
wards here, after an effort to lift them
during the first hour. The pressure on
United States Steel was conspicuous In
spit of the fact that month Just closed
snowed an ouptit of steel and Iron In ex
cess of all precedents and demand Is re
ported to be still in full force. Recent
buyers of United States Steel have urged
not only the great expansion In the Indus
try, but their hope for an Increase In the
dividend disbursement not only to 4, but
to 6 per cent basis. Besides Influential
selling of T'nlted States Steel there was
some pressure on Reading which proved
a weight on the general market The
August earnings of the Union and South
ern Pacific were significant of the growth
of traffic in that part of the country, th
net earnings for Union Pacific showing a
gain of 3711.561, equal to 20 per cent and
the Southern Pacific, 31.067.096, equal to 81
per cent over August of last year. Joined
with the Atchison statement already pub
lished the exhibit makes a striking dem
onstration of the great prosperly to which
the business of th great Pacific carriers
has risen. Union Pacific and Southern
Pacific benefitted from this showing, but
the movement waa not common to the
group. Another sustaining point waa Ches
apeake & Ohio, which added largely to Its
newly established record price level on the
report that th Chicago, Cincinnati
Louisville had been acquired aa an outlet
ttyr this system. Th report was accepted
as likely, although not officially con
firmed. The conflicting Influences In th
market brought prices back after many
fluctuations to not far from the previous
closing.

SHEEP While recelnta were rieclrierilv
lighter than on previous days this week,
they were nevertheless large for a Thurs
day, eighty cars being reported In. Thla
makes the total for the four day this week
in, w nnad, being a gain over the same
four days last week of 77 000 head anH a
gain of over 16.000 head as compared with
tne neavy run of a year ajro. In suite of
the large receipts this week, when the mar
ket closed last night practically everything
had changed hands, barring a few scatter
ing lot. The fact la. Dratlcallv evervthlnar
ha been (old on the day of arrival.
inis morning the market ODened with a
very active demand for fat lamb, th
upply of that kind of lock being very
meager. It was very evident that packer
were anxious for supplies and they bought
everything that had any kill on it at prices
that in most cases looked fullv 10Q15O
higher. -The fact Is fat lambs are a good
10l5c higher than last week's close. Fat
sheep on tha other hand were not par
ticularly active, and the tendency on that
kind of atock ha been a little downward
thla week, the market at the present time
being 10150 lower thn last wek and In
some cases possibly more than that.
reeaers opened slow, but that Is true
practically every mornlnir. aa it tnkea
so much time to shape stuff up that it Is
well along toward midday before the killer
have all been sorted out and before th
feeder are ready to be shown. Still the
reeling was generally about steady with
yeterday. Feeding sheep and ewes have
not shown much change In values so far
this week, being In most cases steady with
last week's close or at least nearly steady.
On the other hand feeding lambs which
were selling at dangerously high prices at
th cloae of last week have declined con
J'1"l'bly, tn better grades being around
lit . . er lnB" laMt week, with light and
t h n kinds In soma case 2540c lower.
Still th market is In very stifactory
condition, as vlewd from a seller's stand
point. Quotations on fat sheep and lambs: Oood
