be the first aviation event during the Hudson-Fulton

contest, announced today that he would at-,
tempt to make this flight as soon as pos
sible after he has assembled Ms machine.
Wilbur Wright,-who has his machine al
most In flying shape, met Curtlss today for
the first time since tha latter returned
from his Kuropean triumphs. The meeting,
which took place In Wright's shed Oh Gov
ernor's Island, waa cordial. No 111 feeling
exists because of the suit which the Wright
brothers have brought against the Herring
Curtlss company for alleged Infringement
of patents. Wright asked Curttaa If he had
found the Information given him ty the
Wrights before Curtlss sailed for France
of any value to him.
Mr. Curtlss said he had, and further
pleasantries were exchanged.
It was while Inspecting' the' grounds at
Governor's Island with William ) Ham
mer of the Hudson-Fulton aviation com
mittee that Curtlas made known his plan
to fly around tha statue of Liberty.
"These grounds are great," he said.
"They are a little rough for starting, but
they are Ideal for landing."
The machine which Wilbur Wright will
use la of exactly , the same dimensions as
that which his brother Orvtlle used at
Fort Myer last year. In fact It Includes
part of that ill-fated aeroplane ' which
dashed to the earth, causing tha death of
Lieutenant Selfridge of tha signal corps.
It Is not as fast a machine aa the one
which has been Sold by ' tha Dayton
brothers to the signal corps, but it Is
capable of carrying two men and of mak
ing a speed of between thirty-eight and
forty miles an hour. .
Curtlss will make no flights fn a wind of
more than five or six miles, but It Is likely
that. Wright may . attempt flights In a
higher wind If It Is from a favorable direc
tion. Wright's contract with tha celebra
tion committee requires a flight of one
hour's duration, whtla Curtlss has tha op
tion of making any flight which his judg
ment dictates. ',

ral wealth of America by educating Its
people regarding the value of wild bird
life, as the only sura check to the Insect
pests that sre rapidly devastating tha
crops and woods of the country, Is tha
object of a movement that waa set on foot
In this city today. Headed by the Na
tional Association of Audubon Societies, a
campaign Is to be begun In every section
of the continent which It Is Intended shall
result In the establishment of a national
university devoted to the conservation of
American resources through the preserva
tion of the pest-killing birds. Suitable en
dowment for an educational Institution of
such vital economic Importance is to be at
once sought by officers of the association.
To greatly extend the educational work
that Is now being pushed with all tha
funds at the command of the Audubon
workers Is designed to be the main aim
of the proponed national university. Skilled
ornithologists are to be employed In In
vestigating, compiling and analysing scien
tific data showing the capacity of various
species of wild birds (or destroying such
pests as the Gypsy moth, the boll weevil
and the brown tall moth, whose ravages
have been proven to cost the country 11.000,-
000,000 In lts crop yield each . year. Men
and women lecturers, trained at tha pro
posed university, will be stationed in every
section of the continent to--present to the
people proofs of their enormous loss In
agricultural wealth due solely" to lack of
knowledge of the work done by the feath
ered Insect-eaters, that nature intended to
check crop plagues.
On the children of the land, who will
face this mot pressing problem when bird
destruction has brought on 'an even more
appalling spread of crop-killing Insects, the
Audubon officials declare they must base
their hopes for the spread of the gospel
of conservation through the bird resources
of the nation. Trained teachers are to be
aeslKiied to conduct summer schools among
the teachers of every region and through
them to reach the great body of future
American citizens. Tha preparation and
extensive circulation of Illustrated, educa
tional pamphlets on the economic uses of
wild bird life Is designed to be one of the
chief activities of tha new national Insti
tution, as It is of tha National Association
of Audubon Societies. t present. Text

"Nothing but the education of the Amer
ican people on the value of. tha wild birds
as crop and forest preservers can now
avail to ward off the Impending agrlcul

sible benefaction, now and for all time, no
