Sept. 22 Various ostensi ble reasons were advanced for the weak ness of the stock market today. The real reason was the suspicion that the leaders In the prolonged advance In prlcea were selling or had aold their holdings. The sup port accorded the market was not of that effective character that has been manifest at any period of pressure for a long time past. Tula action engendered the fear that the almost limitless resources at the com mand of the men credited with the specu lative leadership were no longer being em ployed In further accumulation and in pro tecting values of holdings already acquired. The belief that this process has been go ing on Is fostered by the number uf stories recently influential in stimulating specu lative buying which have failed of con firmation. The glaring instance of the Cen tral Railroad of New Jersey dividend, which was left under yesterday, drew par ticular attention to this subject, owing to the very heavy speculation which has con verged on Reading In the expectation that thla dividend waa to be raised. A summing up of other recent predictions which have proved unreliable was going on today and there waa a disposition prevalent to mis trust intimations of intended dividend In creases, the granting nf valuable subscrip tion rights and the perfecting of Important deals .which have done good service for long time past. The sensational demonstration of strength In ('tilted States steel as the market op ened was of very moderate effect on the general list. For half an hour fully two thirds of the total dealings were made up of Cnlted States Steel, but by that time It had lost its Initial rise of H. which had extended Its record price bv that much to '. In Reading, I'nlon Pacific, St. Paul and other recent speculative favorites, meanwhile, the reallxlng sales were pushed persistently and wide Inroads were made on their prices. The minify market showed no signs of disturbance, but the statistics nf the banking position make it evident that resoutces for merely speculative oper ations on a scale of millions which had been so employed recently are becoming restricted. The private discount rate rose again today In London and Kerlln, admon ishing would-be borrowers that the period of easy concessions on that side waa com ing to an end. Bonds were steady.
