Hard hitting won the second gam for Mr. Hlggln. wMl seven errors were fatal in tha ftrat. Tha loaa of the afternoon gam to Pea Molnea cannot b charged to errora as Kana made the only wobble for th Rourkes and that was not cashed In by Dea Molnea. The simply hit the ball and hit It hard, right on the end of the nose. In tha morning the early hour seemed unfamiliar to tha Rourkee, and they were unable to hold the ball at critical stages, and were charged with seven costly errora. The turn was delayed at Sioux City and reached Omaha on a belated train at I a. m. to begin play at 10 00 a. m. Duka Hollenbeck worked all through the second fray and waa strong until the eighth Inning when he was landed on hard. It waa nip and tuck until the fourth when baas on balls to Dalton oost a run. Dal ,ton walked, was sacrificed to second, went to 'hlrd on an Infield out and cored on iwyer's drive over Fox's head. The gaii.c was full of ginger from start to finish as Is attested by the six double plays which were pulled off, four for Ds Moines and two for 'Omaha. Durham, a recruit Dea Molnea haa just received from Topeka was on tha hill for p II gglns and he . pitched a remarkable game. Twice Dwyer was a little anxious for his welfare and bad Lang warm up but the big fellow atuck It out and won his garnet .With Dea Molnea one run to the good In tha seventh inning Welch walked, was sacrificed to second, went to third on an infield out but there he died although both Cadman and Hollenbeck drew passes, filling tha base. Fisher could tint deliver the goods and grounded one to Nlehoff. Kerner hit a double to start tha eighth, waa sacrificed to third and then stole home. McManua singled, went to aecond when Durham walked, stole third and scored on an Infield out. Dea Molnea made two more In the ninth on three slnglea and a double. - Welch made the only score of the game for Omaha In the ninth when he waa the first man up. He hit the ball over the fence for a home run. Two games this afternoon, the first called at 1 p. m. It is ladles day and Ies Moines will be the opposing team. Score second game: OMAHA. R. H. O. A. Kane acored on a wild pitch, and Pendry grounded out. Omaha had two men on In the third with no one out. but King grounded out and Kane hit a long fly on which Fisher waa doubled by a bully throw by Mattlck. The Rourkea tried to rally In the ninth, but It was too late. Welch and Pendry doubled, and Pendry scored when Dalton dropped Cadman'a long fly, but there it ended. Denver lost two games to Pueblo today, tha flrat because of inability to hit the ball, Oalgano waa pitching, and the socund because of the new players Denver was trying out In battery positions. The first game was a hard contest all the way, the two runa that Pueblo made coming from bases on balls followed by hits. Adams pitched fine ball for Denver, but got himself Into bad places a couple of times from which he could not get out. Ualgano pitched gilt-edged ball and was accorded good support when it waa needed. The game was fast and without feature apart from the pitching and Maag fin fielding. Denver sent in Knols and McKenna, recruits for the second game. McKenna proved too nervous to catch, making one bad error and being unsteady throughout. He was replaced by Neece in the second inning, who waa not any better. Knols was lucky most of the time, and when luck deserted him. Pueblo ran around the banea at will. Maag'a playing waa a feature. In the aeventh Inning Lindsay waa hit on the head by a faat lnahoot. it knocked him unconscious, from which he waa revived after aome mluutes. The accident so unnerved Pitcher Swift of Pueblo that he waa compelled to give way to Joe Locke. Stankard s three base hit In the seventh came when the basea were full. Derrick called the game at the end of th seventh mostly because of the hitting of Lindsay, which had delayed playing. Score, first game: DENTER. AB. R. H. PO. A. PHILADELPHIA. Sept. 16 Philadelphia today defeated Detroit In the first game, considered to be the crucial series of four contests for the American league pennant, by 8 to 1. Although ahowers fell before and during play, nearly 26.000 persons saw the game, with the players surrounded by a hundred policemen, who had been sent to the grounds to preserve order and to protect Hlghtfltlder Cobb of Detroit, who had received threatening letters because of his having spiked Baker of Philadelphia during the recent series between these teams at Detroit. The only Incident which required the Interference of the police was when D. Jones was accused of making an objectionable remark to Murphy as the latter passed Detroit's bench. Murphy drew back his arm as If to strike Jones, but policemen prevented trouble. The game resulted in a pitchers' battle be tween Plank and Summers, in which the latter did the better twirling, while Plank received perfect support. Errora by Detroit lost the game. Plank got out of tight situations by masterly pitching. In the third Inning Detroit filled the bases on two singles and a base on balls, with one out. Cobb, however, was struck out for the second time during the game, and Crawford gave Davla an easy grounder. Philadelphia scored enough runa to win the game In the fourth In ning. Barry had his grounder to Mortarty beaten out, but the latter threw wild to first and the runner reached second base. On Collins' bunt T. Jones first fumbled the ball and then threw wild, Barry scor ing and Collins reaching second. Baker sacrificed, sending Collins to third, and the latter scored when Bush threw Davis out. Detroit scored In the sixth Inning. Crawford drew four balls and stole sec ond and Delehanty was hit by a pitched ball. Murphy made a great running catch on Morlarty's fly, but he threw wild try ing to double Delehanty at first base and Crawford went to third. T.
