CHICAGO, Bept. IB. Continued liberal re
ceipts In the northwest and a slump In
price at Liverpool caused weakness tn the
wheat market here today. At the cloae
price were MjHe to l4c below yeeterday'a
itnal flgurea. Corn and oata closed firm,
but provision were weak.
The wheat market was weak all day,
with the exoeptlon of a short period during
the rirat hour, when prloea advanced aooui
Ic on buying by prominent eommlsalon
house. The Beptember delivery, which wa
subjected to heavy selling pressure oy .a
leading elevator .Interest,, nearly all day,
showed the greatest weakness, and at the
bottom wa nearly lo below the best mark
of the day. The market closed at almost
the lowest point. Decline of HWVic to Mo
were recorded at the opening, owing to
general .ailing iwseoV on a iisavy anoveinaat
In the northwest and on a decline of d to
Id at Liverpool. These Influence affected
the market all day and were reinforced by
additional purchase of. wheat at Duluth
for shipment hero. Two cargoes were re
pcrted to have been bnuitnt there today, one
of which was Intended for delivery on Bep
tember contracts. That option ranged dur
ing the day between 11.02 and S1.03H. while
December sold between 9Hc and &&Sc The
close on Heptember waa II W'A tnd on De
cember M'4ii08Vio.
Trade in the corn pit wa Oulet all day
but the market was firm. The principal
bullish Influence wan the report of a local
crop export, which estimated a ahrlnkage
of 106.0u0.000 bu. In the total yield of corn
In the 1'nlted States, compared with the
latest official statistic. The close was
firm, with prices s,c to Wto higher than
yesterday' eloie.
Buying of the September delivery by
shorts wa the feature of trading In the
oats market and was responsible for Its
modorate firmness. - Price at the close
were a shade to e above the final fig

Liberal realising by tongs caused weak
ties In provisions. Prcea a,t the cloae were

NEW YORK STOCKS AND BONDS
Speculation Girei Evidence of Vital
ity and Naturalness.
UPWARD MOVEMENT GENERAL
Bpeeck of President Taft at Boston
Has God Kf feet Time Loan
Rate Rtaea on trout; '
Demaad.
NEW YORK. Sent. 18. The speculation
In stock today gave greater evidence of
vitality and naturalness than for a long
time past. Operators were not eonflned
so entirely to a handful of stocks or even,
a ha been the case often, to three stocks.
t nlon Paclflo. Reading and United States
Steel. Those three stocks were by no
mean obscure In the day's transactions,
but they did not absorb 60 per cent of the
aggregate dealings. The demand branched
out Into new quarters. New to Account
ror those movements was not forthcoming
always or even generally.
The Interpretation placed by the finan
cial community on President Taft'a
peech In Boston at the outset of his long
speech making tour of the west had Influ
ence. The chief executive a endorsement
of the plan for the creation of a central
bank of Issue as a means of solving the
currency problem had a good effect on
sentiment In the financial districts. So had
the cheerful belief expressed that we are
"on the eve of another great business ex
pansion and era of prosperity." Kven the
Insistence on the need of further reform
of business method nnd the danger of
lapse in old abuses was read In the llcht
of the qualification, "nothing revolution
ary, nothing disturbing 10 legitimate busi
ness is needed," rather than in the llarht
of the main contention. Industrious use
was made also of the rumors of an
approachment between the two great bank
ing groups usually deslgnnted as the
Standard Oil and Morgan group. The con
crete fact on which these tumor were
based sifted down to the election of J. P.
Morgan. Jr.. as a director of the National
Cltv bank, a Standard Oil Institution, and
of James Stlllman. chairman of the board
of that bank, as a director of the Clcve
'and, Chicago, Cincinnati AY St. Louis
railway, one of the Morgan- Vanderbllt
railroad. As Oeorge W. Perkins, one of
the Morgan partners. was already a
director of the National City bank, and
as James Stlllman was already a director
of the New York Central, the new order
of things presented no revolutionary as
pects. The speculative imagniatlon took
fire with tho attractive suggestion, how
ever, tnd ;hrew Itself with srdor Into tho
buying of stock at rapidly rising prices.
The report from Pittsburg of the visit
to the steel works of a French banker,
who. It was nssumed, waa securing infor
mation to pave the way to list the stock
of the I'nited States Steel corporation on
the Bourse of Parts, was the most Influ
ential factor In carrying United States
Stel to It new record levrl. Rending also
touched a new record pi-Ice on the belief
that some plan for segtegalion Its coal
company was maturing. The further tight
ening of the money market had not the
slightest effect In checking the specula
tion. Most of the day' call loans were
made at 8 per cent, but the rate did not
rise above that. Rates for time oans.
however, were advanced a fraction for the
various nmtuitties and the demand wa
very strong.
Bonds were firm. Total sales, pr value
$4.u0.000. United State bond were un
changed on call.,

desirable steer and a decided shorts of
really good stuff. ,-
Uood beef atuera were tn demand at good
steady to strong prices, In fact, the mar
ket on cattle of that kind ha been strong
all week. A a matter of course the
common tnd Inferior kind were, alow auid
weak, but still they kept selling.
Cows and heifers were in fair demand
and sold quite freely at prloea that were
teady with yesterday. Some saleamen
were quoting desirable as strong as com
pared with yesterday.
Uood feeder sold quit freely at firm
price, the demand being fully equal to the
supply of that kind of stuff. Undesirable
cattle continue rather slow and dull.

SHKEP This has been so far the heav
leat week of the year as regards sheep rV-'l
ceipts. ror the rust two days over 60,000
head was received, but the demand was
so good that when the market closed yes
terday afternoon, prettv much everything
In the yards had been cleaned up, only a
few scattering loada being carried over.
This morning there was atlll a' heavier
run than on any previous day, but so
many of the trains were late that it was
well along In the forenoon before every
thing waa In. This naturally delayed the
trade somewhat, so that Ihe market did
not open as early as usual, and, as there
is always a disposition on the part ot buy
ers to hold off In hope of getting some
thing better on the late trains, the trade
a as not very brisk.
It wa very evident that buyer folt that
price should be a little lower on both fat
sheep and lambs, and they ataried out
with the evident Intention of taking off as
much aa lo&l5c. HUH the supply of killers
waa not very large and they did not suc
ceed entirely In their efforts. To call the
general market on killers weak to lofrtfc
lower would Just about cover the situation,
although heavy old wethers showed more
loss than that.
Tbe big bulk of the receipt consisted of
feeders, but fortunately the demand was
good, there being a good many new buyeia
tn the yards, ao thai In spite of the latxe
recelpta, the market only showed about the
samo decline as killers, being anywhere
from weak to 10fil6c loner.
