It Report of serious damage to the wheat crop of Argentina by locusts cauaed a sharp bulge in wheat prices on the board of trade here today. Final quotations showed gains of l'Vai compared with Saturday's closa. Corn and a.its closed steady and provisions lrregu .ar. Attention of traders hi the wheat pit was diverted temporarily . from domestic conditions, which have been growing more bearish dally to the situation In Argen tina, where tha growing crop of wheat la now aaid to be threatened by loeusta. One if ..Hie leading implement concerns In this country . waa . reported to have received a message from . that country claiming that the crop tiad already suffered con siderable Injury and thla report waa con firmed partially by other dispatches from private sources. These reports inspired active buying toward midday and through out , the remainder of the day demand continued brisk. Early in the session the market waa depressed by the enormous receipts In the northwest, which were the Urgent on record. Firmness of cash wheat here and In the southwest, however, tended to offset this liberal movement. September wheat was again extremely erratic and during the day sold between tl.Ol1 and 81.03. De cember ranged between 6Hc and 98c. The market closed strong at almost the top, September being at 81.03 and De cember at HStrostyc. Increased receipts and a falling off of eastern demand for the caeh grain created considerable weakness In the corn market, but the late strength of wheat caused a firmer feeling In the final hour. The market closed about steady with prices a shade higher to a lower compared with the previous close. . Weaknesa of corn prompted moderate profit-taking in oats, which resulted In a heavy tone the greater part of the day. The market, however, rallied a trifle late In the session. Final quotations showed galos of a shade to Vie. Provisions were weak with the excep tion of September pork, which made alight gains. EEACTIOITAIIY TENDENCY PUSHED Prompt Fllllaa- of Vaeaaelea on Vnlon Paelfle Board Tends to Steady Tale line Boidi Are Weak. NEW YORK, Sept. 13-The dull trading and the narrowing price fluctuations In today's stock market marked the normal fate of suhaldence from the violent con tortions of adjustment of last week's lead ing event. No one supposed that the death of a capitalist of Mr. Harrlman's power and grasp contained any positive force for betterment of values of securities. The early termination of the headlong advance of Friday was expected, therefore, and the agency of the uncovered short Interest In csuslng It was quite Justly recognised. The reactionary tendency which developed on Saturday was pushed by various profes sional devices today In the effort to widen the swing of the price movement on which professional trading profits depend. The growing exhaustion of last week's powerful motive forces was manifest In the restric tion of the reaction and later fluttering vi brations of prices. The remsining traces of feverlshness In the movement of I'nlon Pacific were accountable by the steps taken towards the continuity of its admin istration and to some of the rumors bear ing on the future policy of the vast inter ests and the powerful Influences thus In volved. The prompt election of new mem bers of the board of dlrectora and of the executive committee was regarded as In tended to put a stop to some of the rumors of alleged contemplated changes. The ex pectation that a member of the firm of J. I'. Morgan & Co., was to be admitted to the board was thus disappointed. London took an unfavorable view of our mone tary outlook and was disquieted as well by the American copper statistics as show ing a rate of production running heavily In excess of consumption. The unsettle' ment in the market was aggravated by rumors that embarrassments of brokerage houses were threatened as a consequence of the violent fluctuations of the recent past. The denial of these rumors gave the mar ket Ita first show of strength during the mid-session, but a fresh reaction In Union Pacific proved Its Influence on the gen eral list still maintained. The complexion of the weekly bank state ment published after the market closed on Saturday came In for much discussion and prepared santlment for a future hard ening of money rates. Bankers do not anticipate tight money markets this fall, In spite of the narrow reserve of banks it present. A rise In Chicago exchange to 20 cents discount per 11.000 wss a develop ment of the day, but the tide of the cur rency movement Is strongly towards the Interior. There Is an Increasing supply of commercial paper and prime grades for the regular maturities were marked up to 44'n5 per cent. The fall In I'nlon Pacific allowing for the dividend of today car ried It off 74c from the high point of the rally touched on Saturday. The closing of the books today for the coming annual meeting ends any demand for representa tion at that meeting. Bonds were weak. Total sales par value 83.ITi6.OO0. On the other hand there were others who thought they did not secure hardly stsady prices. The bulk of the hogs sold around I7.SO.00, with a small bunch of good hoga as high as i 20 which makes a new high record for the season. Representative sales: No. it .. 44... In spite of the large receipts, the markt as a whole was in very satisfactory condition. Packers were all anxious for supplies wtlh the result that the market on desir able kinds of killers opened early in the morning and was fairly active at good steady prices, to say the leant. Taking into account that a good share of the arrivals were wet and also taking Into considera tion the quality, packer In many case were qoutlng their purensses as strong to quite a lilt! higher than last week. The offerings consteted largejy of lambs, which sold up to $7 36 Oood. well finished year lings reached Hn,, the best price paid for that kind of stock tn some time. For a Monday there were a good man country buyers in the yards looking fo. feeder sheep and lambs and It was also very evident that commission men had a good many very liberal buying orders In hand.
