Ducky Holmes
Refuses to Flay
For the Eagles
Yellow Magnate Will Not Come to
Omaha, So Visitors Are De
prived of Games.
Ducky Holmes, owner of the Sioux City
earn, ought to make a big hit hereafter
with the Englea. He refused to exchange
three games ih his town for the same
number In Omaha so that base ball mlnht
be provided every day of the Eagles' con
vention. That's the color of this Holmes'.
President Rourke, In conjunction with
John J. Ryder, secretary of the Engles'
convention committee, began arrangements
weeks ago to provide a schedule so as to
have continuous base ball In Omaha during
the convention week and other teams en
tered most heartily Into the arrangement.
Holmes sulked and refused to say what
he would do until the eleventh hour and
then he stuck out his lip and refused.
The result Is Omaha will have to play a
double-hender In Sioux City today and one
game tomorrow and the Eagles will be
cheated out of games those two days. But
the team will be back for two games on
Thursday with Des Moines, one In the
forenoon and one In the afternoon, and It
will be at home throughout the week, so
that despite little Ducky's peevishness the
visiting Eagles will get to see some games.
After Des Moines comes Lincoln.
There was no reason In the world why
Holmes should refuse to go Into this ar
rangement, other than that he simply
wanted to be contrary. He couldn't possi
bly have lost by the deal, but had an op
portunity of gaining and gaining big. In
stead of playing to the customary Sioux
City handful he could have shared the
proceeds of large attendances at Vinton
street - park. Then he would have had
nothing to loae so far as schedule was
concerned, but Instead he would have
gained again. If anything. The games he
played here would have been compensated
by the Rourkes playing that many games
in Sioux City at the end of the season, and
the end of the season Is always the best
time to be at home.
But no consideration that President
Rourke could offer this stubborn little fel
low would move him. it's simply his way.
People say he can't help It.
