"We would be justified In doing almost anything from the treatment accorded us the last time we were In Sioux City, but we are too good sports for that and care too much for our standing In the league and In organised base ball. If Dea Moines beats us in the coming scries It will be be cause we are unable to beat Des Moines." This Is the reply of Acting Manager Boles of Topeka to the puerile yarn sent down from Sioux City that Topeka had agreed to throw all of Its coming games with IMS Molnea In order that the Iowans might secure a commanding lead over Hloux City and beat the latter out of the pennant. This cry from the water tank up north Is nothing new and Is received tn Omaha as nothing more than the welching of a lot of near-Sports who, seeing their ability to get the pennant for nothing as they did last season, or win It without a fight, have been seized by a severe spell of cold feet and resorted to the quitter's trick of hol lering. It Is pointed out that vith Glenalvln In Sioux City that team has been winning two a day for a week or so and ought to be able to keep It up, for Glenalvln and Holmes are two of a kind. "What more do those rats want?" de manded a fan down at the Smoke House. "Do they want umpires like Glenalvln all over the league so they may not only be assured of winning all their games, hut that Dea Moines and Omaha, their rivals for the flag may be compelled to lost all thelr's?" Vg-TIT XTaV, (Lint IS rQn.H.1 "Trwv" Brown, prohablv the beat foot ball player wearing a Bellevue uniform, and a roach that puts tha singer Into a team, has returned, and for the last two weeks he has been drilling the York High school foot ball team, preparatory to the many hard contests to come. If the mem bers of last year's team return Brown thinks that with the present material he can put a team In tha field that will be a credit ta York Hla-h school that In veara Daat haa won so many honors. It looks at the present time that the team this year will be experienced foot bail players, and Mr. Brown will not have to Introduce several for tbs first time to the Intricacies of the game. IDA GROVE ELEVEN AT WORK Members of Team Start ia ia Boat af Condition. IDA OROVE. la., Sept 10. (Special.) The Ida Grove foot ball aquad thla year Is big In size as well as In members, and It Is apparent that Ida Grove will have a team that will be one of the heaviest this place ever turned out. There have been thirty men out In uniform each night this week, and It Is plain this early In the day that Coach Schlafer Is a taskmaster. Thomas was a horse for work himself and expected every man on the squad to follow his pace, but he loafed along with the men the first week or two and then started the drive that did not let up until the end of tho sea son. Schlafer works with an entirely dif ferent method. He came here and found that as most of the squad had bean work ing on the farm during the summer there was little necessity of starting the work easy tn order to get rid of surplus weight, and as a result he started the hard work on the start, and the week ends with the preliminary practice well advanced. The practice haa progressed sufficiently to make It plain that Ida Grove will again be In Class A this season. There are so many veterans on the squad this year that the work of the coach has been much sim plified, and Instead of coming here to de velop a team he finds that he has come hero to finish off a team that waa already In good shape. Albert Bird, who played center last year, Is again at the keystone of Ida's Una Ray Harrlgan, who played a great guard last year, Is again In that place, and It is prob able that Orlan Scott, a brother of Homer Scott, who played the other guard laat aea son, will work there this year. For tackles Johnston and Cecil Harrlgan will make two strong men. They are both old-timers on the squad. For ends, Louis Fobes Is back again and Addison Klnser, substitute half of 1908. Is being worked at ths other end with good results. Clayt Pllcher, who worked at half last year, has been moved up to quarter for a tryout there. Big Ben Todd, who captains the team this season, will play one of the halves, and Lee Horn Is pulled back from end, where he made the All-Iowa last year, and placed In the other quarter. Todd and Horn will make a pair of backs that will be heard from. Homer Scott, who made good at guard last year, has been pulled back to fullback. He is heavy, but a plunger, and has a great genius for forward passing. Todd, Horn and Scott make a trio of backs that are not only fast but they can stand the gaff, and If the line will hold It Is a cinch those backs are going to make themselvea felt on the high school gridiron of the state this fall. Now that Ida Grove Is seeking games to fill Its schedule, all those would-be cham pionship teams of last year that filled the papers with challenges when they knew the schedule was complete, are keeping re markably quiet. Manager Gillan of the Auditorium Is planning a good wrestle, for the ICagles during the convention a the Auditorium. Gillan la anxloua to aecure Ordeman, the Minneapolis Norwegian who made a mon key of the vaunted Dr. Roller of Seattle In the latter city the night of September 2. If he succeeds In bringing together these two giant Scandinavians he will certainly have a match worth watching and one the Eagles will have to esteem as a big feature of their convention. Westergaard Is a prime favorite In Omaha, where he haa wrestled many tlmea ; and many good men. He la a great mat artiMt and la better this year than ever and coming all the time. He Is anxloua to beat Ordeman, whom Gotch regards as one of the very top-notch young men of the world. Ordeman went Into Dr. Roller's home city and beat him to a standstill. Roller had boasted for many years that aside from his merciless defeat by Gotch, he had never lost a fall In Seattle. Ordeman had never met him, but. after wrestling one hour with the doctor, he picked Roller up, dashed him down on the mat and piled, on top of him, and Roller waa oarrled to his dressing room unconscious. Three doc tors worked over him and within an hour he was able to ask how it happened. Roller naa attempted to rough It with the Nor wegian, not knowing that that was the Mlnnesotans own game.
