NEW YORK. 8ient. .-The stock market
started out today with the upposMon ap
parently that conditions were adjusted to
await the news from Mr. Harrlman sick
chamber without further feverish excite
ment. The new of the financier's death
came Just thirty-five minutes after the
stock exchange closed.
The early dealing were on a small basis
and prices were only slightly depressed
and )ioed a capacity to rally easily. The
protective measures In the market were
relaxed liter and when the daily crop
of rumors and contradictions began to be
received the gradual aag which had set in
li converted into a precipitate decline.
Support seemed ta be withdrawn and the
market left to take care ot Itself. Tna;
opinion in the financial community was
prepared for an unfavorable termination
of Mr. Ilamman's illness was clear and
was not disguised. The divergence of opin
ion began on the topic of the probable
effect on the stock market of the event.
Ihese varied as widely as between pre
dictions of a probable rally In the market
on account of an over extennlon of the
short Interest and dire prophesies of a
disastrous slump In the whole market. It
was noted with Interest that an active
borrowing demand existed for Union Pac
ific stock In the loan crowd where the
operators short of stock assemble to fill
their temporary requirements by borrow
ing stocks for delivery. This pnase' ot a
short interest is too readily simulated to
carry much conviction to professlona!
atock .iterators.
i ne annroarhlng annual meeting of the
Union Pacific It was alleged had stimu
lated a borrowing demand for the stock
for mirnoaes of renresentatlon. This ex
planation did not allay anxiety on the
Dart of the stockholders, as It served to
give aome point to rumors of Internal dls
anilnni In the comDanv and to revive at
tention to the charges made by Mr. Har
rlinan's friends of an attempt to raid the
property during his Illness. Another ex
nlanatlon of the borrowing demand for
Union Pacific was that It represented sales
bv Insiders In the property who des red
to conceal their IdentVty by borrowing
stock for delivery rather than appearing
uoenlv as sellers. The belief that a breach
had occurred amongst Interests hitherto
actl.ig In concert In thla proportion pro
perty gave Importance to rtpois tnai tn
difference had spread Into the banking
world and Involved Important interests,
which had been brought into strong accord
In the troubled period during the financial
panic when a spirit of co-operation was
life. Cablet from abroad indicated an ap
prehension amongst foreigners that the in
tegrity of the market pool In United States
Steel was threatened by this rupture. The
amount of the load which this reputed pool
Is carrying Is estimated at enormous tig
urea owing to the determined absorpt.on
of that stock at all levels and against all
obstacle which has been long evident. The
special weakness of the Gould group was
due to the supposed Interest Mr. Harrlman
has shown In the long contemplated finan
cial plan for these properties and which
It was feared might be prejudiced by the
new conditions. Money rates were not af
fected. Intimations from lenders of money
Involved in speculative holdings of stocks
doubtless had a share in the unloading
that was In evidence. Professional bear
selling was a conspicuous fact and the de
mand for thla element to cover shorts
worked the substantial rally from the low
est prices of the day. The break resulted
In carrying prices considerably lower than
were touched In the slump on Saturday,
August 28.
Bonds were weak. Total sales par value,
83.246.0u0. United States bonds were un
changed on call.

r. Stock V Vo
4rO and aifiotly
Oct n statement of the resources of the lig Horn Tower
Company, and take notioe of the unusual opportunity of Kit
ting n certificate of Stock at cash price in its water potcr
plant, paying 40.
THINK
4,000 to 5,000 electrical horse power will do ns much
work, as 10,000 live horses working duy and night forever
and ever; never eat, never sleep, fed by water only, with
but three men to take care of the plant.
SMALL INVESTORS
It is the only oportunity ever offered to get in on the
bottom price on water power, generating electricity. Big
men and water power monopolies have secured all other
water power plants. 1
MACHINERY INSTALLED
Two units, generating 1,500 to 2,000 horso power, are
now installed and sold for $100 per horse power, n year,
which means at lowest estimate, $12,500 per month income.
REASON FOR SELLING 1,000 S II ARB AT PAR
. We need this money to install machinery for three more
units in the power house, to make the full capacity. These
shares represent one-seventh interest in the Company.
MARKET FOR POWER
12,000 horse power have btxn applied (or, within 14 miles of tho
darn, to be ua?d in mines and In Therniopolis and ShoshOnl. Tha power
installed la sold right at the dam. 150,000 acres of choice lands slop
ing towards the river are available for irrigation, of which 100,000
acres could be irrigated by this Company, but it would take tha full
capacity of the dam for four monthB to furnlh water for thla Immense
tract of land, and the Company has decided to only take up 30,000
acres, to which the ditch has been surveyed. These lands are near
Shoshoni and adjacent to the river and reservoir.
Your Money Will Double in Thirty Months
$100.00 invested brings $40.00 each year.
$1,000.00 invested brings $400.00 each year.

HOGS Hoks war extremely slow and
the market as a whole very unsatisfactory
to selllns Interest from start to finl'h.
A very few load old early at price that
did not look very much lower, but tha

and not of ufflclent Importance to talk
ahntit. Packer as a rule started out Did-
dinn 510c lower with tha declaration that
they would Duy inem inai way or leave
the hnvn alone. As salesmen did not feel
justified in making: the concession, the
trade wa extremely aiow, wnn siiram
nothing dolnir during the first half of the
rnrenoon. in raet it was wen aionK to
ward midday before buyers and sellers

In the end tha sellers Tisa to max tn

yesterday, receipts of
sheep have been moderate all this week,
while the demand has been very brisk, so
that everything haa been cleaned up on
the day of arrival. Price have been stead
ily tending upward.
The aame conditions aa noted yesterday
were still In control today, with the result
that tha general market this morning wa
ltKf15a higher, making an advance for th
week on desirable killer of 25&3bc. Every
thing offered thl morning changed hand
Juat about a fast a buyer could get
at It, with th result that desirable lot
were about all cleaned up by the middle
of the forenoon or a little later. A a
matter of course. Inferior tuff I never
aought after and does not a a rule show
a much advance aa the belter grade.
Feeders have alao been strengthening up,
being In very boo J demand and moderate
supply. While they have not ehown pua
Ibly a much advance th best killer
they are anywhere from strong to 25c
higher than last week, the amount of th
advance depending upon the kind and qual
ity. Quotations on fat sheep and lambs: Oood
