STEEPLEJACK THRILLS CROWD erforwie If erro-Ralslna; Antlca on ' ' to of Flag-pole InrnoDDtlag the Henahaw. Oren Dotsoa, a steeple Jack, amused him self and several hundred people on Farnam Street by performing a few Informal feats on top of the flagstaff that aurmounts the Henahaw hotel. He,pllmbed up the flagstaff, which is thirty feet or more above the roof on the eighth story of the building, and pro ceeded to divest himself of coat, collar and Beoktia. which he threw down to the roof. A crowd had begun to notice him and seeing that his efforts were appreciated he CanJtnpea. His necktie caught on one ot tha guy wires, so he climbed half way down and leaned out to kick It off. Then he went back up again, getting more and more reckless and the crowd got larger and more Interested. He tried several times to stand on his head on the ball at the top, but had to content with hanging by his hands with his head down. He hung' for several seconds by one hand. Then' he took the top of the pole In the pit 'of his" stomac and spun around like a :- very slow, but very airy teetotum. Finally he slid down to tha roof, walked out on the Henshaw sign, sat down with his feet 'dangling over the crowd eight stories below, rolled a cigarette, and wavad bis hand to the audience. The Armour Packing: company does not propose to relinquish Its opportunity to sup ply the several hundred thouBanda of pounda of fresh beef to Fort Leavenworth and the military prison at Fort Leaven worth, even' though the contract has al ready been awarded to the B. & H. Pack ing company of Leavenworth by the pur chalng commissary of the army for that district. The B. II. Paeklnr company was the lowest bidder, and the . contract was awarded to that company and approved by the War department. The Armour company Interposes the ob jection that the. B. & 11. company haa not complied with the government requirementa that all fresh meata furnished the army must be subjected to government Inspec tion In the abattolra by the regularly ap pointed government Inspectors, without reference to the Inspections made ,by the purchasing commissaries of the army. The B. tc H. Packing company of Leav enworth la an Independent packing com pany, but the Independent companies do not come under the government Inhibition of federal Inspection. The matter Is now In the hands of the secretary of war, and a pretty war Is liable to be Instituted against the Indepen dent packers In the matter of government contracts. Should the contention of the Armour company prevail It would shot out all in dependent packers from competing for gov ernment buslnesa. The Independent packers are taking the matter up and are backing the B. St H. company of Leavenworth In the fight on tha same ground that the government has decided against the purchase of 'oommla sary supplies for the army from manu facturing organisations controlled by the trusts. This rule was recently applied n the case of the purchase of the tobacco supplies for the army, wherein all proposals from tobacco firms ualer control of the Amer ican Tobacco truvt were turned down, and the tobacco supplies were only purchased from firms outside the trust.
