NEW YORK. Aug. 31. it became evident
from the outset today that much of the
excitement and feverishness had died out
of the stork market. The dullness of the
trading and the narrowness of the fluctua
tions were In strong contrast to the vio
lence of last week's movements and even
to the sudden recovery of yesterday.
The statement made by Mr. Harrlman
himself yesterday nnd the disposition mani
fested on th part of th press and public
to take him at his word and abate the
eager show of ctirinsltv about his condi
tion seemed to remove the only factor
having power at present to move prices.
The Harrlman statement was not left with
out some interested comment, nevertheless.
While It had the effect of quieting sppre
hension of an Immediate crisis in the finan
cier's case, Its admissions were sufficiently
candid to prove a condition of health pre
cluding presmt close sttentlon to business
affairs and leaving quite undetermined the
possible duration of this enforced absti
nence. F.ven more Interest attached to
the veiled allusion to the Interest shown In
his welfare by his friends, "and perhaps
bv some others." This passage was read
In Wall street in the light of persistent
rumors that the recent upset In the stock
market was due to underground machina
tions analr.st the Harrlman dominance It
self and that developments In this matter
were as much responsible tor Mr. narn
man's hastv return from abroad as the
stats of his health Itself. With the partial
obscuration of the Harrlman topic the
effect was to call attention to other possi
ble agents in the downward turn in prices
of sleeks. The question arose whether the
elimination of Mr. Harrlman' poor health
would have left the market capable or sus
taining Itself at ihe unstable level to which
It had been pushed, t ne agncunurei oui
look was given closer attention, with the
Imminence of the government's monthly
report on the cotton crop and the evidence
thai the crop has been going backward
during the last month. The weather
1 urea us weekly bulletin showed a continu
ance of conditions unfavorable both for
cotton and corn. The specula. Ive moed
created by these facts gave added Influence
to the warning note uttered by Chnirman
Jan es J. Hill of the Gieat Northern and
by some of the northwestern milling au
thorities of a danger of over estimating
the volume of the present year's wheat
crop. In another direction there is an
expectation that copper statistics for Au
gust will prove less favorable than fo
July.- Borne of the selling was supposed to
be of stocks bought last week for purpose
of supporting the market during .ts weak
ness and which would be resold on the
first advantageous opportunity in the ra
tional course of things. The good earr.lngB
of the Harrlman Pacifies during July were
Ignored.
The preparation for the September 1
mnnev settlements were without effect in
the call loan market, but the tone of time
money grew still firmer.
