The one real sensation in automobile history. The c;ir that revolutionized the automobile business of the world. Competition pooh-poohed for about a year while Ford sold ten thousand cars. Then competition woke up and copied. A copy is never as good as the original. There has been a score or more 500.00 run- abouts since the $500.00 Ford. Most of them made a scream-or two and then quit. Coukm t compete with Ford quality. There remains to be built a $500.00 runabout as good as the Ford. History repeats itself. Last year the Ford Model "T" Touring car was announced, this year it is copied. Quite a lot of initial screams have already been heard, more are coming. Thj sensations of today are the twelve and tveuty four months late copies of the Ford successes of the past. Vanadium steel, motors cast in one block, left-hand drive, three-point suspension, one uni versal joint, draw-steel rear axle, unit construc tion, magneto, 100-inch wheel base, lov price, light weight none but Ford advertised these features a year ago. The 1910 Model "T" is the 1909 success, refined and improved. It is not new; it has been tried out by ten thousand owners and twelve months' service. It is and has been the only car made in the Ford factory for over a year, and in it is concentrated all the ability, energy and manufacturing facilities of the fore most automobile designer and builder in the world, backed by the greatest producing ox gau- ization that was ever brought together and built up. Specialization makes manufacturing per fection and economy in cost. . 4-cylinder 20-h. p., 5-passenger touring car duplicate of the car that won the New York Seattle race with magneto built right in the car, $850.00. Van Brunt is touring Europe with Mis. Vad Brunt C. F. Louk is spending the week at Lake Okobojo, and will tour that section ln a Marrlon. Dick Stewart will entertain the Mitchell Ranger, which Is due today. He has this to say of It: "Forty-eight hours ahead of the Schedule arranged for the first transcontinental war dispatch trip ever attempted by an auto mobile, the Mitchell Ranger, bearing dis patches from Major General Leonard A. Wood, U. S. A., commanding the Depart ment of the East, and addressed to Major General John F. Weston, U. S. A., com manding the Department of California, which is speeding towards the Pacific return via SL Joseph, The first Franklin automobiles of 1910 i models to arrive In this city have been received by Guy L. Smith. They are one twenty-eight-horse power touring car and one elgh teen-horse power touring car, and present features which Immediately attract the attention of the observing motorist. An Innovation ln gasoline engine con struction that, while it stops short of being revolutionary, Is a long advance ln engine cooling and efficiency marks the motor. This advance Is obtained by the use of a light, sheet-metal air jacket for each cylinder, through which cooling Is direct and equal for every part of the cylinder circumference. Franklin engines have al ways "jeen air-cooled, and the 1910 Improve ment is a development of the Franklin Idea iustead of a departure from It. The air packets of the cylinders form funml-l'ke openings In the deck of an otherwise airtight compartment formed with sheet metal about the engine base. At the rear of this compartment is a new suction flywheel, which, by the creation of a partial vacuum, draws a strong cur rent of cooling air down about the sides of the cylinders, which are studded with vertical cooling flanges. The downward currents of air are ap plied when they are coolest 'j the hottest part of the cylinder, namely, the head and valves, giving them the maximum benefit of the cooling system. There is no oppor tunity for chance in this application and the course of the currents is accurately determined by the air Jackets. The cool ing air Is kept close to the cylinder walls l'roin top to bottom. With the gain ln efficiency ts a gala in simplicity, for the fan, which is a neces sary feature of most automobile engines, is eliminated. The automobile season Is begun this left Wednesday morning for the second leg of the journey, "In charge of Private Malcom E. Par- rott. Tenth regiment, New York National guard, the VA0 model machine, flrHt of that season's output tarned out under the personal direction of Designer Bate at the Racine (Wis.) plant, left New York City Thursday, August 19, cheered by one of the largest throngs that ever gathered to dis patch a motor car on a long journey. Military experts everywhere have found that the task set for the Mitchell Ranger has commanded their attention.' In no small measure the success of the expedi tion that will be terminated at the Pre sidio, ln San Francisco, September 16. or sooner If the gain on the schedule that began ln the Empire state continues, will make a deep Imprint on the determinations of government officials relative to the augmentation of the automobile in the service of the War department. "Although scheduled to make a leisurely trip, stopping nights and making side trips to visit Buch military posts as Private Par rott receives instructions to. call at. Driver Zirbles found the roads so good after leav Ing Utlca, N. Y., that the machine was "let out" considerably, arrvlng at Elyrla, U., muny hours ahead of the official sched ule and reaching Llgonier, Ind , Monday night, thirty-six hours ahead of the sched uled time. Upon the arrival of the machine in Chicago early Tuesday afternoon, Au gust 24, after being escorted from the In diana line by a cavalcade of Mitchell cars, it was found that the war dispatch party as forty-eight hours aheud of the sched ule and had a running lime of fifty-i'ive hours from New York. "No mechanical troubles of any kind had Interfered with the progress of the ma chine. The speedometer Indicated nearly l,ti00 miles due to frequent detours loa.old roads under repair. No tire trouble was year by the makers of the Franklin car at ; encountered. a date earlier than ever before. The new season Is made continuous with the old. At the Franklin factory at Syracuse already many 1910 cars have been turned out, the factory operating at Its capacity. W. S. Hathaway, district manager for lie Maxwell Urisco company, manufacturers of the Maxwell car, spent yesterday In Omaha. He was accompanied by H. E. Kookledge of Kansas City, manager of the Maxwell, and here they met Lewis E. Doty, who has been made manager of the Omaha branch. Mr. Hathaway said that he had selected a site on Farnam street for a three story brick garage. Just west of W. L. Huffman Auto company, and that Architect Kimball will prepare plans at once, and that the erection of the building will be pushed vigorously until completed. Tbe building will be 0x140 feet, and Is expected to be one of the best atfoidod in Omaha. W. L. Huffman has returned from the Indianapolis races, where he took over the Inter State can painted for the Indian apolis show. He will exhibit all of these cars at his garage on Farnam street this week. Tbe triangular race, which la to be run under the auspices of the Council Bluffs, Des Moines and Sioux City Auto clubs the last of September of first of October, promise to be one of the events of the aeAson. Secretary Honaa aatd yesterday ' GeorKA Keim. mftnuirer fiir R. Ft. Kimhnll. v ho orovi the Cadillac 30 ln the endurance run to UastliiKs, has received Information thai United Stales army officers and au thorities at the Northwestern Military academy are conducting interesting ex jtrlmerits at Chicago which seem to prove th oretically, at least the jet uclency of .uuuU automobiles against airships in time of war. Some time since the commandant of the Northwtstern purchased a Cadillac 30 and had it equipped with a rapid-fire gun. He announceU at the time his belief in the adaptability of the motor car to uxe agaiint thee nemy and that he proposed to satisfy himself, at least, and doubt less ?oine of the higher army officers. To complete the experiment equipment one of the army dirigible balloons was loaned by the War department, and the automobile detachment Is supoprted by a motoi cycle squad. On several different occasions the air ship hus ascended and maneuvered as it v.ould on scouting duty, and each time (.heuietically) has been punciured by shots from the' Cadillac's rapid-fire gun and brought to the ground a mass of tangled wreckage. The automobile in action carries four men a driver, a gunner and two men In the tonneau. Tbe motorcycle squad is armed with high-power carbines, and this part of the experiment also has been very gratifying to tbe army men. When the experiments at Chicago have been concluded it is possible that the Cadillao will be taken to Washington and further experiments conducted there. The Light motorcycle will be shown at L. Flesher's this week. This Is a clearing nut sale of that particular model, and will no doubt be very attractive to motorcycle people. The Model is J"i-lHrsepower, spring fork, doublo grip control and Is equipped with Thor motor. W. L. Huffman announces that the Hup mobile will compete against the larger cars for honors in the Munsey reliability run. It has been entered by "Little Joe" Wels enfeld of Baltimore, a well known en thusiast among the eastern motorists. The Munsey run covers the distance between Washington, D. C, and Boston and return, and ln severity will rank with the Glidden tours. It begins September 22 and ends September 29. The Hupmoblle was a con testant for seven days in the recent Glid den tour, having a perfect score through out the first week. After its withdrawal 1 It continued as a noncontentant, running with the (Contesting cars and leading many of them into controls each night Mr. Guy L. Smith haa signed with the H. H. Franklin Manufacturing company as the dealer to handle Franklin automobiles ln this ctty during the season of 1910. The Franklin cars for 1910 are being made in sixteen models, besides trucks. The out put from the factory for the coming sea son has already begun. As has been the case with the Franklin from its beginning the engine is air-cooled. There is In the method of the air-cooling a modification which produces a marked increase ln efficiency. A laminated wood chassis frame, full elliptic springs, large Urea and an alum inum body, continue to be characteristics of the Franklin. Combined, they are pro ductive of two features light weight and easy riding. The cars are three-horsepower ratings, 42, 28 and 18, and Include touring cars, runabouts, close-eoupled-body cars, limousines, landaulets, town cars and taxic&bs. D. C. Bradford and party have just completed the trip from Omaha to Denver In a Locomobile. They were at Clseyenne on Frontier day. Thpy visited Colorado Springs and toured Colorado. Aside from dusty roads the trip was beautiful. L. Fletcher on a Merkel made the trip from Omaha to Bell wood last week. He covered the distance of more than forty mlloa ln one hour and fifteen minutes. The Merkel was double cylinder six and one-half horsepower and made ninety-eight miles in three hours' actual riding time. At times Fletcher says that he made sixty miles an hour. Yesterday the Hupmoblle won the hour race at Brighton Hiach track, New York, 226 miles, defeating two S. T. O. French cars, listing at $2,100, and several others. Besides manufacturing 8,000 Oakland "40" ln the touring car, runabout and toy tonneau styles, the company will bring out for 1910 a new four-cylinder car to sell at Ji.'V. which will have a wheel base of 100 Inches. This car lll be equipped with a 4x4 motor, developing approximately thirty-horse power. The drie will be by shaft transmisalon of the selective type, sliding gear the front axle "I" beam forg li g multiple disk clutch tires 32x34 mag neto will be Included.
