tilar and reactionary course of prlcea to

still In a highly sensitive state and de

cerning whieh Ih tieual conflicting runiois
and atatenienta were again current, but of
which more definite knowledge ought to
be obtainable. ,
Traffic offlclala of the leading railway
ytem In the middle west are virtually
unanimous In their declaratlona that busi
ness Is steadily mounting higher, with
an especially large movement in mer
chandise. It was reported today that thd
railroad entering Chicago have in mind
an Increase of two cents per 100 pound
In "freight terminal service." Foreign
advices were cheerful In the main. Benin
cables were most optimistic, with re
ported steady betterment In Grman s
Industrial condition. Taking He cue from
London, where Americana, especially Union
Faciflc. were active and atrong, our mar
ket began operatlone In mu-h the am
fashion. The advantage waa fleeting, how
ever, vigorous selling of the Harrlman
Issues soon wiping out all advances, and
by noon prices of Union Facific and
M-juthern Pacific were under last Sat
urday's lowest quotstlons. while strong
pressure was being exerted upon Reading
mnA Mlata Steel.
Colncld-nt with the decline In the Harrl
nian Issue was a statement that no
changes would occur In the dividends of
Fnlon Pacific and Southern Pacific at
the directors" meeting tomorrow. In sharp
contrast to the other railway shsrea was
the strength of the Gould luea, Texaa &
Pacific, Wabash and Denver Hio
Grande, all diaplaylng rirmnees. uuine
on the exchange fell off in the after
noon session, the volume of transactions
up to 2 o'clock barely reaching the aver
age of the first two houra of trading on
several daya of the last week Price
rsllled somewhat before the last hour,
when the "street" received word that Mr.
Ilarrlman had sent asaurance to his as
sociates from the ship now bringing him
to port, of his "good condition.'" For a
brief while this news was without effect,
but In effect the final trading there wer
sharp rebounds In Union Pacific, Southern
Pacific and United States Steel, which
carried them well above the previous hlnn
prices of the day. Other stocks that

There were several loads of lambs on
sale and young killers met with a good

quality of mppllea, however, wa only
fair and while buyer were willing enough
to look over offering they were Inclined
to take their time in filling orders. A good
firm tone to the trade waa evident and
pncea generally ruled about ateady.
As wss noted above, feeder stock was
In very good supply. In fact, fully half of
today s receipts oensisted of sheep and
lambs suitable for feeding purposes.
Plenty of buyers were to be found In al
most every alley, and Inquiry was rigorous.
Owing to the delsy necessitated In sort

receipts are heavy, and la not to be taken
as a true reflection of trading activity.
Most prices paid were fully steady, mors

CATTLK Receipts of cattle thl morning
were quite liberal, ZM cars being reported
In. The run, however, was not as large
as a week ago. when 804 cars were re
ported In the yards. As might be ex
pected, the reoeipts c6nsisted largely of
western cattle, the supply of natives being
comparatively small. The market as a
whole was In fair condition, prices on all
kinds of cattle being about steady at the
outset. Buyers alt. eeemed to want cattle
and there waa a fair - movement to th
trade.
Beef steers of desirable quality were
very free sellers, packsrs being anxious
for cattle of that kind. 'The price paid
did not show, any very great change as
compared with lam week, so that both
buyers and sellers were as a nils quoting
the msrket at about stesdy with last week
on the fair to good killers.
Cows and heifers also moved off with
the ressonshle degree of activity, a con
siderable proportion of the desirable grades
changing hands In very good season.
flood feeders, that Is. cattle having
weight and quality, were In demand at
steady prices, on the otner nana tne
light cattle and inferior- klnda were slow
and the tendency a little lower, being
more or less neglected In favor of the bet
ter grades.
