f CHICAOO, Aug. 20. Ideal weather for the
1 harvest of the new crop of wheat In the
northwest caused a severe slump In wheat
prices on the Board of Trade today, but
much of the loss was subsequently regained
on covering by shorts. At the close prices
'were tfic lower than yesterday's final
I figures. Corn closed strong and oats and
'provisions easy.
The wheat market waa weak the greater
part of the day, owing to general selling
prompted by continued favorable weather
.for harvesting and movement of the new
crop. The movement of the new wheat In
the northwest Is gaining dally, and, with
good weather, the arrivals at Minneapolis
and Duluth will soon reach considerable
proportions. Keports from the spring wheat
country were again of the most optlmlstlo
character as regards the prospective yield,
and harvesting was said to be progressing
I rapidly. Several of the leading holders
were free sellers during the first half of
the day, particularly of the September de
livery, but late In the session offerings be
came much more meager. Talk of some
1 wheat having been Bold for export Induced
considerable ooverlng, which resulted in a
rally of about lo In all deliveries. The mar
ket closed fairly steady.
Growing belief that the corn crop of the
southwest Is being seriously Injured by
drouth Inspired lively buying of corn.
which resulted In a strong rally following
a slump early In the day due to the break
In wheat. The market closed strong, with
prices up save lo Kai'feo.
Oats were extremely weak early In the
day, but became much steadier late In the
besslon. Prices at the close were a shade
lower to 40 higher.
Provisions were Inclined to be weak all
day. At the close prices were unchanged to
10c lower.

ACTIVE LIST SHOWS LOSSES
Balk of Raslnesa Is In I n Ion and
.oataern Paelflr, Reading; and
Steel Rally Beglst ear
rinse.
NEW TORK. Aug. 20 Today s stock
market was again irregular when not al
together disorganised. At the opening most
dfcllhes were fractional, but betore tne end
of the first hour the movement gatheied
greater momentum under a fresh accumu
lation of selling orders and recessions of
2 points or more were recotded uirougn
the active list. The business of the morn
ing session was estimated at over "tW.ono
shares. Just how much of this huge
amount represented long stock and how
much operations fur the decline it is. of
course, impossible to say. There were In
termittent r:illles, but early in the atter
noon the list took a fresn start, with fur
ther liquidation in t'nlon Pac.flc. Houlhrrn
Pacific, Heading, Bteel and others of the
active group.
Of the many theories offered to account
for the market's extreme heaviness only
two are worthy of serious consideration.
The tirst, of course, has to do with the
apprehension existing in many quarters re
narulng the health of Mr. E. H. Harrlman,
and the other Is that a "shaking out" of
the rank and file was deemed advisable
by those who are supposed to be tn con
tiol of the market's machinery. The final
hour was characterised by orderly' and
steady recovery, many Issues renaming the
larger part of their loss, while not a few
made net gains. Throughout the day con
siderable strength was shown by a group
of epeclaltles, which included t nited Ktales
Hubber, American Car and Foundry and
American Locomotive. The local tractions
also exhibited such steaainesi.. As an il
lustration of the market's narrowness,
deullngs In four stocks Union Pacific,
Southern Pacific, Heading and United
Slates Steel made up fully 60 per cent of
the day's business, which aggregated 1.450.
oou shares. The closing was steady, with
the rally still under way. IjoihIou was a
seller here to the extent of 40,000 shares.
The heavy liquidation In stocks made for
easier rates in the money market, but
the demand was very light. Forecasts of
thu weekly cash movement indicates a gain
of about 13.500,000 by local banks, much of
this coming from the Interior. The day s
budget of news bearing upon the financial
situation Included advices of better cotton
crop conditions In Texas, cooler weather
the corn belt and record hreaking sales
of wool In Boston. A marked decline In
copper exports for the week was reported.
The bond market was again weaa. intai
sales, par value, amounted to 84.".O00.
United States bonds were unchanged.

CATTLE Receipts were fair for a Fri
day, only forty cars being reported in.
The receipts were made up largely of
western arassers. mostly odds and ends
No cornfeda of any consequence were In
cluded anions' the orrertnKi and very tew
of the range cattle were good enough fur
beef, so that there was very nine on
aale with which to make a test of the
market. The Inquiry from dresred beef
men was very good and values were nom
inally steady for anything at all useful
In this line. As compared with a ween
ago, the market for both cornfed and range
beeves may safely bo quoted all ut i..n
higher, with the advance well sustained
right up to the close.
There were only about a dozen loads of
cows and heifers on sale and the general
market presented no new features. Puck
ers and outside buyers took the good to
choice grades at fully steady prices, while
the common and canning grades were
rather slow on account of the slack de
mand from feeders and dinners. As com
pared with a week ago the market for cow-
stuff shows no very great change. On the
more desirable grades prices are perhaps
a shade lower than they were last week
while medium and common stuff la quoted
as steady.
As usual toward Ahe close of the week
there was not a good deal going on In the
feeder line. Fresh supplies were very lim
ited and generally Indifferent In point of
quality, while the country demand was
rather slack. Prices ware very little dif
ferent from yesterday, but on all but the
good to choice heavy cattle the market is
fully 154126c lower for the week, with every
Indication that quite a few cattle will have
to be carried over until next week,
Quotations on cattle: Good to choice

SHEEP Despite the unusually alow
movement of supplies In the fat sheep
branch of the trade yesterday there was
nothlns of oonseouenca carried over until
today and practically everything on sals
realized quotacly steady figures. On a few
odds and ends prices appeared to be a
shade lower, perhaps, but barring scattered
soft spots Wednesday's value level was
pretty well sustained. Influenced by scant
receipts today packers and feeder buyers
wasted no time in snorts to secure ac
counts. There were only about twelve
double decks on sale, both feeding and fat
stork. It was a busy market from tne
opening and the bulk of offerings changed
hands by 9. SO a. m. There were hardly
enough supplies tn any on branch of the
trads to give the mnrket very much force
ns a value tester, but trading figures on
most sales were lust about steady. Feeder
lambs brought .30; feeder yearlings real
ized 14 65; fat lambs were weighed up at
2", and fat wethers realised 14.25.
The trade In fat sheeo and lambs has
been rather perverse affair thus far this
week. Eastern packers lubricated the fat
lamb toboggan at the opening and buyers
for local concerns promptly followed suit.
Lamb values were accordingly set back 25
OtlOc from last week's close during the last
few days. Regardless of the falling market
the demand has been almost vigorous and
of liberal volume on most days, and young
Killers nave been free sellers at tne easier
prices. The fact that a healthy tone to the
tranc has been insufficient to bolster val
ues Is not at all Illogical, however. Last
week's advanoe In fat lambs was too sud
den for permanency and this week's break
was more or leas expected. Incidentally fat
lamb supplies received at this point during
tne week were the best that have been
marketed any week yet this season.
Fat sheep have been In good supply sines
Monday, but have generally met with a
rather Indifferent Inquiry. If there has
bftfca any change In the market, however,
It has been In the direction of better fig
ures. Prices on good handy weight killers
are quotable at 104716c higher than last
Saturday, with medium and Common grades
comparatively strong.
The feeder trade has presented no espe
cially new features of late. At the opening
of the week an easier feeling waa apparent,
caused by the recent hot spell, but trading
figures were not materially affected.
Feeder lambs have especially been In good
request and week-end values on both sheep
and lambs are fully steady with last week.
Almost half of the week's receipts have
been feeders.
Total receipts for the five days this week
approximate 52.000 head, as compared with
43,600 head for the five days of last week
una 48,000 head lor the same period of last
year.

,NEW YORK, Aug. 30. COTTON The
market opened steady at a decline of 7 51 9
points, In response to disappointing cables
and liquidation by recent buyers, who are,
no doubt, disappointed by the failure of
bullish crop news to stimulate a more gen
eral demand. Early weather reports Indi
cated another day of excessive heat In the
southwest and there was good buying at
the decline, but bulls were not at all ag
gressive and prices fluctuated around the
opening figures during the middle of the
morning, with the tone rather nervous
