A poor widow lay on her bard, straw
hed groaning with pain. She supported
herself and five children by taking In
washing.
An accident happened as she waa tak
ing a basket of clothes to a family. Being
very tlrtd and weak from overwork and
lack of nourishing food, she fell fainting
I lu the street, prostrated by the Intense
beat. The sttowwhtte clothes were scat
tered In theyiust. People passing In an
automobile lifted her up and., having re
placed the clothes In the basket, took the
jioir woman home.
.' The children were frightened when their
mother was carried In, looking so death-
. like: but a neighbor assured then) she had
only fainted.
Marjorle, the eldest child, kept crying
and wringing her hands and said, "Oh. if
there waa only ome way for me to earn
money '"to help my sick ' mother." Mrs.
Smith, the neighbor, aaid, "You are a
good girl. Marjorle. Uo over to my house
and get The Omaha Bee. The want adj

Marjorle returned with the paper and
found an ad that pleased her very much.
She started at once to try and secure the
aituation and was successful. When she
returned home she said, "Oh! mamma, this
good luck comes to us from reading the

The Union Pacific railroad has had it
taxes In Wyoming raised 256 per cent by
the operation of the new law which was
passed by the last legislature. Other rail
road a In the state have been ralseO lr.

Under the old law the roadi were taxed
on a one-fourth valuation, but under the
new law they must pay on an actual value.
This means 'bat the assessment roll of
Wyoming has been raised in one year from
Ii0,000.000 to 1200,000,000. This represents
more nearly tl taxable valuation of
Wyoming and not Just that part which the
owners were unable to conceal from the
assebbors.
