"Unskilled labor Is a scarce article," de
clared Superintendent Burnham of the
Thompson-Scarrett company, whlPh is put
ting up the Brandeis annex and theater.
"We have shipped some men in from Cht
cago because unable to get them here. Of
bricklayers and masons there are plenty,
but general labor Is not plentiful." '
The company Is now working 800 men, 100
on each shift, and steady progress is being
made in putting up the building. The ex
cavating, sinking of piers and the laying
of the lower walls is always the slowest
appearing work In the erection of a build
ing, and in a few days when the structural
steel begins to go in place the building will
progress at a fast rate.

Tolf Hanson did not return to Omaha
Saturday and relatives and friends hardly
expect him to adhere to the determination
he announced in New York Wednesday to
atat the next day for this city.
The general belief is that he will never
return, though some fancy that he will
ultimately screw up his courage to the
point-of starting for Omaha. "It doesn't
look like It now," said C. E. Herring, who
lias been his attorney. Sidney Swanson
his brother-in-law, said that neither he nor
Mrs. Hanson had had any word from him
since that telegram of July 18, when he
said he would start the next day.

granted by Judge Kennedy because of the
Incompetency of one of the Jurors.
Douglas A.-Davis, who was drawn as a
juror in the second trial of the case had
been adjudged a spendthrift and was aot
Ing under a guardian at the time he.

the examination, he said ha was a horse
trader and declared that he knew of no
reason why he should not be a competent
and fair Juror. Judge Kennedy held that
although his financial Incompetency might
not make him unfit for Jury service, he
was guilty of misrepresentation 1n not de
claring it when asked concerning hla fit
ness. '
The suit -was brought by Llllle A. Turner
for 16.000 damages alleged to have been suf
fered In an -accident at Twenty-third and
Cuming streets in 1906. It was tried once
before Judge Troup and the verdict wsb
for the company. This judgment was va
cated by Judge Troup because of a fault
in his instructions to the Jury, and the
second trial came before Judge Kennedy.
The second verdict was also for the defendant.

Union raoiflo Corn Show Booklet
The Union Pacific is the first railroad to
order a corn show booklet prepared for this
year's exposition. General Pausenger
Agent E. L. Lomax haa ordered thousands
printed of this new booklet, for which the
cover design cost the road $300. A space
30x45 has been taken at tha corn show by
the road, besides space 30x70 In which a
moving picture show will be installed. This,
with the government exhibit, will show the
whole reclamation work in the west.

A week ago a smooth confidence man
"worked" two strangers at South Omaha
for $40. He told them he was a ranchman
from Nevada and would give them employ
ment in his state. He met them at Union
station In this city and tookvthetn to 8outh
Omaha, where he secured his grip and
went to the depot with his victims. There
he admitted to them that he was lacking
sufficient coin to pay the transportation
for all three and requested that one of them

came to Omaha and was met at Union stu

Now Paul has appealed to the police of

forty-one states working up exhibits and
