"Well, wife, I guess all that wheat will be wasted, for her I've ridden all over the country for fcur dnyg and I can't find any men to harvest It." said Mr. Whitney to his wife. "And there are Jones and Thompson and Smith and Harvey who can't get men either." Mr. Whitney was a wealthy farmer, who owned and lived on a Urge farm six miles from Yankton, 6. D. The above statement from her husband atarted Mrs. Whitney to thinking. "Well," she said at last, "why don't you telephone to your brother Richard In Omaha and ask him to put an id In The Omaha Bee? I think you could get harvest ers that way." "My sakes allvel" exclaimed her husband. "Do you suprose there are harvesters In a city? I wouldn't r,ut such a silly ad as that In a city paper." "You do as I say and tee If you don't get as many as you want," said Mrs. Whitney. "It don't coat much either." "I've tried everything else, so I might s well try this. But I know my wheat will rot before I get harvesters this way," raid Mr. Whitney, feeling completely discour aged. Nevertheless, he called up his brother, who Is the proprietor of an Omaha hotel, and told him l.ls trouble and asked him to put an ad in The Omaha Bee. The nex,t morning the above ad appeared. This was Wednesday, and Friday evening the Whit ney telephone bell rang. "Hello," said Mr. Whitney. "Hello" came from the other end. ' Is this Will" "Yes." said the farmer. "This is Richard. J have a whole armv of men coining to sea you Monday." "All riKht," said Will. "S?nd all you can find, for I've work for a score of men for three neeks." "Well, goodbye. Will. I hope you'll get your wheat harvested. ' Goodbye.'' Turning from the telephone. Mr Whitney said, "Richard says there's an army of men coming up here Monday from the wheat fields of Kansas." , "I told you so," said his wife. Tn two weeks f'om the next night the wheat was all slacked. That night Mr. Whitney taid. "I see $5,000 in those stacks of wheat, and I think that leather davenport that you have wanted so long is In tight, and daughter shall have her Steinway piano." 'The Omaha Bee Is all right yet, even for farmers. Isn't It, husband?" said Mrs. Whitney playfully. "Yes, The Omaha Be for me," was Mr. Whitney's admission. J.-Prlc Of stocks roe to the high level of the week today, which measured also the maximum aver age of prices resetted at any time since the boom period of 16. Vmovered shorts were among the buyers, that party hav ln abandoned the stiDPOsitlon that the en actment of the tariff bill was to be the signal for heavy realising on the part of the Influential, capitalists who are cred ited with th control of the present stock market. Thst control was asserted easily today by the rapid advanc In prices of a num ber of the greatest favorites among the speculative stocks. The buoyant flight to new record prices of such stocks as I'nited States Pteel. I'nlon Pacific, Read ing and Atchison, not to mention others which are less well regarded, sxerclsed a dominating Influence on sentiment towards the whole market. The crops prospect were moat dlsciissea In the day s market, and the price move ment was regarded as a discounting of the government crop report on Monday, which Is expected to make a highly favor able ahowlng for all th great cereal crops. Pome effect of relief was produced by the announcement of the secretary of the treasury thst none of the new Panama bonds would be Issued until congress has acted on the differential in on circula tion lasued under these bonds to equalise the privilege with outstanding 2 per cents. Th management of the stock market campaign were impressed with the Impor tance of a strong close for the week In the market as an attraction to speculative ventures with the opening of the new week, and to afford an advantage on this basis for reellxlng sales to meet the ex pected new demsnd. No anxiety was man ifested over the rising course of Interest rstes. which has affected mercantile pa per with an advance to 4 to 4' per cent for prime grades.
