CHICAGO CRAItt AMD PROVISIONS
Wheat Price Batahllah New Low
Delivery Mark.
CHICAGO, Aug. 1 Wheat price tab
llhed a new low record marl for the
season on the Board of Tred today when
the September delivery joined the Decem
ber option below the dollar mark. The
bottom for September wa reached at fi9M,gr.
'4e and for December at IRWtM . Coi n
and oata closed strong and provisions
steady.
Wheat continued Its downward course
owing to renewed selling by commlion
houes and discouraged holders brought out
by weak oables and a continuance of favor
able weather conditions for the spring
sown crop. Sentiment n the pit was bear
ish all day, although a steadier feeling de
veloped late In the session, owing: to the
low temperatures In western Canada and
the talk of a moderate export business In
wheat here and of liberal sale of flour
for export In the northwest. During the
day the "September delivery sold between
WHe-4e and 21.00H. The market cloned
easy, with prices Ho below th final figure
of the prevloua day, September being at
To.
Hot weather complaint created consider
able bullish sentiment In the corn pit and
caused a sharp rally In prices. Short were
active bidders for the September and De
cember deliveries and a leading cash In
terest also bought freely of both option.
The market cloned s:rong at the top, with
prices up a shade to SUo.
Oats were strong all day. with the excep
tion of a brief period at the opening, when
the market displayed a slight weakness,
owing to the further break In wheat and
corn. There was considerable bitylng all
day. based on the theory that prior have
declined sufficiently for th preaent. The
market closed firm, with prices up 8.614c
to o.
The slump In grain had a weakening ef
fect on provisions at th opening, but the
market soon became firm, owing to con
tinued light receipts of hogs at western
packing centers. Prices at th clone were
6c lower to )0o higher.

NEW YORK, Aug -The rise in price
today had the appearance of a righting In
the market from the dip at yesteraay'a
cr.jse. 'there was, In fact, considerate re
buying of stocks sold snort by tne pro
femiunal element yesterday on the assump
tion that the enactment of the tariif law
would be followed by a movement to realize
profits. Nu such renllxin movement de
veloped today and the unco.ereJ luars were
prompted to cover their short coinract.
The gradual expansion 01 ouslness activ
ity anu lh detinue shaping ot the prok
Pct for the final form of the tariff law
were Incentives to active speculation In
stock. It 1 supposed that speculation
waa In the hands, fur the mont part, of the
more Important class of capitalists and me,i
affiliated with great corporation and
banks.
The stock market has not offered evi
dence at any time of a broad general par
ticipation hy the general public, such a
I" characteristic of the boom periods of
speculation. The awakening of uch a
speculation ha been an object of the pow
erful Interests which have controlled the
action of the tock market througnout the
recent movement. The aim would be to
facilitate the distribution at the profitable
high prices now prevailing of the stocks
accumulated at the lower prices.
The enactment of the tariff law yester
day brought no Immediate response today
resembling an hwakened gen-ral specula
tion In stocks. After the spasmodic demand
from yesterday's short seller the trading
became Intensely dull, but wn actively re
hewed In th closing dealings, when the
tone was very strong. The strength of the
grangers todav Indicated the special hopes
of a good. showing for the corn crop con
dition. Spring wheat Is also counted on to make
a promising exhibition. This had some
thing to do with the conspicuous place
helikby St. Paul In the transactions todav.
The price rose above 161 for the first time
since 190H. when the rights to subscribe to
new stock on profitable terms was ac
corded to stockholders.
Not much attention wa paid to the fore
casts of the currency movement. In view
of continued ease of the call monev mar
ket. The operations with the subtreasury
this week have absorbed $1,132.00.-) from the
banks. , ind this officially reported move
ment IS much more reliable than the usunl
estimate of the express movement with
the Interior. Last week, for Instance, th
bank statement showed little trace of the
estimated gnln of $11,000,000. This week's es
timates point to a curtailment of the loss
to the subtreasury by about lt.000.0on.
Inlted States Steel's rise to 7tiS and Union
Pacific to 203 made new record prices for
those stocks and helDed materially to th.
strong closing tone.
Bonds were firm. Total sale, par value,
$.i.4i2,000. United States bond were un.
changed on call.
Number of sales and leading quotations
on stocks today were as follows:

CATTL.K Receipts of came this morn
ing were very light, only forty cars being
reported in. This means the total for the
five days this week Is 14,000 head in round
numbers, being a falling off of about 2,400
head as compared with the same tim last
week and of 2,700 head as compared with
With so few cattle on sale no very Inter
esting features were developed, It being a
typical Friday's market, slow and without
much change In prices In any direction.
Ihe few beef cattle sold in About the Same
otches as yesterday and cows were steady,
with some sales possibly a little lower,
owing to the fact that buyers wei not at
all anxious for supplies, as there were not
nough of any kind here to really make a
killing.
Thei were a few cars of feeders In
cluded among the arrivals, which also
moved at about yesterday's figures.

on sal this morning to make a market.
Only two tars of lambs were reported In
and these sold at quotably steady prices a
Utrg portion of them going to A feeder 'at
The trad this week has bom up re
markably well under heavy recelpta. Aa
was noted V'edneday the receipts for the
first three days of the week were heavier
than th receipts for any thre consecutive
days sw far this year. In this connection
It might b well 10 call attention to flv
days' supplies as compared vlth last wea
fi'd .1??i.,r l't included
the official count ihua far 1 over 41 uuO
head, aa (.gainst 21.0uu head for the first
five days of last week and 32.000 head for
the cot responding period of last year
V hlle a gain of approximately 21.o0 head
In on week Is not ery unusual uuring tne
range season. It is rather significant at
Ihe opening, since It Indicates that westein
tlieeptnen have decided to try out the trade
for toft spots. The Increased receipts as
compared with last year also reflect In .
measure -the unusually good condition of
riKr throughout the v.L
Condltlitis urrouiiuing ie live mutton
traao during the first thre davs this week
did not eerve lo accelerate demand by any
meaiis. The eek eponed In a rather slo
quiet style, partially Induced bv liberal
supplies, and this feature characterised the
market In a greater or lens degree until
yesterday. Increased sorting, wf couia
wa In a mtvtsur responsible for th rather
sluggish movement of iir.pl!. Buyer
picked out butcher hep for their target
Monday and any effort at hammering val
ue durln th esrller part of th week was
more noticeable In thl branch of th trad.
The total decline, however. I only about
lO.i l.ic lower than last week clue On
the other hand, fat lamb have mad up
for any weakne in the sheep department.
The demand ha been god all th week and
today the price level I quotably strong a
compared with lt Saturday
Feeder stock ha been in pretty good sup
fly for thl time of the veer, but to all
appearances the outlet for feeder is of
unlimited volume. Qualltv, of cotir. was
one of the principal factor In effecting a
ale. but practically everything In the wv
of feeder received thl week has moved
readily at steady to strong prioes.
