IMM BI.E-HF.ADErt AT DENVER Slagging Competition Ends with Honors About Even. DEN V ER. Colo., Aug. 5 -Terrific hitting by Wichita won the first of the two games this afternoon, and the samr sort of work won the second for Denver. Both were drugging contests, In which the players, and especially the pitchers, used all the d liberation and a Utile more than the law allows. Wichita begsn Its hitting In the first Inning of the first game and kept It up throughout, making at least one hit In each Inning. Denver started a little later In the same line, batttng hard and long, but Just f. little short of th- visitors. Cole v. maae rour hits in rive times up aim niaon Mul did the same. Shaner hitting brought In menv rune for Wichita. Denver had half a doien chance to win with a long hit tint nt ihtn limn Khaner shut down hsrd. so that the locals hsd four- tn men left on bases. Wlrhlta was close up with twelve, the totals of the two being about a record. In a game Pfelster pitched for Omaha here, years ago, Denver had eighteen men left on bases In nine Innings. The only feature of the first game was the batting, and It relation would be a long story. Denver msde four runs In the first In ning of the second game on good hitting. In the second inning Denver made a single and two two-baggers, yet secured but one run, two men being caught at the plate. In the fifth Inning Wichita, which had not made a hit up to that time, opened viciously on Rohannon, making three runs. As Dt-nver came back with three nina In the last hslf of the Inning on three hits, it just saved the game, for in the first half of the sixth Wichita again fell on Bo hannon, getting five run on fi.-e hits and a hase on balls. Then, It being almost dusk, Haskell called the game, against Wichita protests. Score, first game: WICHITA. AB. R. H. O. A. It was easily the most excit ing game of the year. A double stonl. In which Towne threw the ball over Welch' head allowing Mattlck and Dwyer to score, wa really the deciding factor of the game, the two tallies tying lt up. Both Alderman and Lang pitched beautiful ball, but war poorly supported. "Babe" Towne' two base hit with the bases full was the fea ture of the gam from a batting standpoint.
