CHICAGO, Avs- 4, W'heat sold below the dollar mark on the Board of Trad today for the flrat time In several months, when December, which was liquidated on the prospect of a big crop In the northwest, dropped to 94o. At the clone ths various options showed a net decline of from 4c to V0V1C. Corn, declined. AV14c and oats finished weak. Provisions were steady. Titer was selling pressure on the wheat market .throughout the day. The selling at first cam mainly from bears who were backings their judgment of a bumper crop In the northwest with considerable en thusiasm. v At the decline more wheat cam out on exhausted margins or from disgusted longs. Rosy prospects for the crop were recorded In messages. Probably LOOO.OOB buahsls were sold abroad and the cash demand from the seaboard was said to. ba brisk.. The story. 0 ths corn market waa that of wheat over again, with the net losses ' greater. Liquidation began almost at the opening.- Western houses - were sellers of the cash article her. Considerable De cember and May corn went to exporters against sales for shipment In December and later. The east was aaid to be In need of cor a for feeding purposes and a disposition to buy at the decline was evlr.oed. What buying of oat mere was was chiefly en resting orders from shorts who had Indicated today'a level as the proper flace to secure their profits. Cash oat n the sample market were Ho lower. The ruimber of successive days of ad vancing price was cited today wiih In creasing frequency as an evidence that reaction wa Imminent. The professional element acted on this prospect by putting out short sale and attempting to force the reaction. The success of this effort was moderate and was mixed with the rise at various new points. This demonstration of resist ing power In the market was aciepted a renewed proof of the control held by large financial interests of the course of the mar ket. Tnls control has proved so effective and so formidable that It serves to intimi date the opposing party In the speculation, which Is without the leadership of any of the powerful and resourceful personalities which have conducted bear campaigns in the past.- . . . The news oontlnues to waicaio nniiuni values of securities and the only quesuoii In speculation Is of the technical Liosltloti and whether prices have had already mors advance than they are entitled to. The immunity of the call loan market from any Influence of the shifting tlda of the cur' rency movement makes a bulwark for th speculative position and encourages the holding ot securities, many of which still pay a materially higher Investment retain than can be secured in the money market. Th publication of the net earnings toi Jun and of the fiscal year of the Harrl man lines was signalled by an advance til the price of Union Pacific to a new record price. Union Pacific's revenue over ex pense and taxes of H8.284.I14 for the year takes no account of the Income from ln vestments, which amounted to 16,019.ta2 for the preceding fiscal year, the aggregate Implying a safe margin over the $m,64,i!W required to pay last year's 10 per cent divi dend. Th comparison of railroad earnings has com now to apply to the period last year when the railroads had secured thorough control of their operating expen -es to meet the great depreciation In gross earnings. Th net earnings at this time last year, In consequence, sulfered less in com parison with the years befor. The smaller changes In June net earnings this year, compared with th last, for that reason, hav leas significance than the changes In that Item In preceding months. Huc-h rhanres already reported Included a Knrlnkllna- of actual decreases In the net showing. CATTLE The cattle run was very mod erate this morning, only 147 cars being re ported in, making the total for the three days this week 11.000 head, as against 13.000 for ths same three days last week. The decrease of over 1,000 head per day on an average this week mad buyers of all kinds of cattle hungrier for supplies than th-y have been on a good many day of late. Buyers of beef steers were out In good seaaon In the morning and it wa very evident that they wanted th cattlo from the way they hurried from one pen to an other. The result was an active trade, with everything cleaned up in very good season In the morning. Price ranged any where from strong to 10c higher. Aa high as $7.16 was paid this morning, making a new high record for the year to date. What has been said regarding beef steers would apply equally well to th market on cows and heifers. In addition to a very good local demand there were also good outside orders, with the trade active In consequence and prices strong to lOo higher than yesterday. I The supply of stockers and feeders has been small this week, and with the pros pects that there would not be many more in later ana wun no surplus on liana, speculators all wanted a few loads, sj that th meager offerings were soon dis posed of. Prices were generally a little higher than yesterday,' being in some oaa s as much as 10c higher, lt will be noted from the above that the market on all kinds of cattle was In a good, healthy and entirely satisfactory condition aa viewed from a seller' standpoint. Yesterday's supplies and today's estimate to'al almost 100 double decks, which Indi cates that the rang season has opened In real earnest. It wlH be remembered that early trade yesterday was very slow and that no small portion of receipts was car ried over Into the afternoon. Practicallv everything was sold, however, at price levels noted In yesterday's report. The principal reason why a slow trade at this time of the year Is more probable than at any other time Is because of the larger amount of sorting that Is done before pens are eventually cleared and supplies weighed up. mis condition or the range mutton market features It annually and Is not tn be regarded aa a reflection upon trade. This morning s receipts, as has already been noted, were liberal, about fortv-flvis cars being reported In. The bulk consisted of butcher stock, lambs and feeders from northwestern ranges. The trade opened rather quietly, with nothing much sold early with which to teat the market. As th morning progressed lt became apparent that butcher sheep were srnefluled for a little dent and salesmen and packers alike wer almost unanimous In calling the market on this class of stock right around weak to a dime lower than yesterday. .Lambs, however, met with a warmer reception and anything In pretty fair flesh that possessed quality moved In good sea son at prices that were generally strong. One bunch of butcher lambs sold early at 17.26. While the trade !r. feeding stuff was a trifle slow, prices aa a rule held up about steady, some pretty good lambs bringing $6.06.
