Tide Torn In Wheat Market, aad
There la Sharp Advance.
CHICAGO, July 28 The tide turned In
the wheat market today, ' following the
steady decline of the lent week or more,
and prices advanced sharply, final quota
tions showing net gains of lc to te.
Corn also closed strong, but oata, with
the exception of the July delivery,, were
weak. Provisions broke severely, and at
the close prices were 82ic to I1.J0 lower
than the previous close.
The bulge In wheat occurred during the
final half of the day, and at the top price
Jtvere 2"o to 3e above the- low mark of
the session.
One of the principal features of the day's
trading waa persistent buying by a lead

tby September option). The market Opened
-weak at declines" of'4tAc to Tic, July
being at HOP and Reptomber at $1 02;
to tl.OXM. Vigorous support by leading
rash interests soon caused a. ateadler feel
ing, and as the eeeston advanced, senti
ment became decidedly bullish.
Additional black rust reports from the
northwest, unsettled weather In the winter
Wheat belt and the discovery that more
than 130 tot loads of . wheat had been
taken for export today. Including about
thirty boat load "worked" late yesterday,
stampeded shorts during the final hour.
The top for July waa reached at S1.0S, and
for September at $1.05. The market closed
Strong.

Satisfaction with the quarterly report of
earnings of the I'nlted States Steel cor
poration was not unmixed, and tne exhibit
was held to Justify a dividend policy on
th part of the directors at least as cau
tious as that adopted
Th $29,841,4)00 of earnings for the quar
ter, while rising handsomely over those
for the preceding quarter, and still more
markedly ever the corresponding quarter
of last year, are seen to be, with the ex
ceptions of last year, the year of de
pression In W04 ana lm, wnen tne cor
poration was formed, the smallest earn
ings reported for the corresponding quar
ter in one year.
In the matter of the 4.579.900 tons of un
filled orders on hand, also. It Is seen
that, while the figurerlaea above that for
any intervening quarter since that ending
December 31. lsoi, yet tnere is louna an un
broken series of excesses over this figure
for every quarter before that since the one
ending September 30, 1904.
That date carries the comparison nacK
to the period of depression from which
the Industry had not yet emerged after
the depression of 1908. This more detailed
analysis of the report, both as an exhibit
of the present state of restoration of the
steel Industry and in Its promise for im
mediate further progress, waa of some
what sobering effect on speculative sen
timent. The absence of an official state
ment of the course of events since the
date of the report waa commented upon,
in view of the use made of early Intima
tions that such a statement would accom
pany th report. Points of strength in
the stock market helped to sustain prices,
for which particular causes were assigned.
The rise in New York Central was oc
casioned by renewed rumors of Harrtman
Investment In that stock.
The soft coalers were helped by nopes
of a revival of demand by awakening
Industrial activity. An important short In
terest was believed to be covering in Read
ing. Amalgamated Copper suffered from
the renewed fall In the price of the metal.
The upturn In the wheat market called
attention to the possible consequence or
a crop scare, with the critical period still
to be faced. Final prices, aa a rule, were
little changed from last night, and showed
mingled gain and losses.

COW 8.
SHKKP Conditions in the sheep barns
this morning were decidedly sgalnst sell
ers. In the first place receipts were lib
eral, but what was more Important, ad
vices from (other selling points wei-e very
discouraging. Packers all had bad reports
as regards the condition of the eastern
mutton market. Moreover prices at this
point have been very high as compared
with other markets, the same wethers that
brought n 00 here yesterday selling on the
Chicago market at the same time at only
15. 10. All of these bear features helped to
depress the market at this point, with the
result that prices were generally 25c lower
on fat sheep than yesterday. In fact,
some of the same sheep hma yesterday
sold a flat quarter lower.
Fat lamb were In light supply, most of
the arrivals being on the feeder order.
Still the lamb market was lower, most
salesmen quoting the decline as much as
I6W2.1C as compared with yesterday. As
was the case with sheen, the trade was
slow even at the lower prices.
There was quite a sprinkling of feeders
on sale this morning, but there were also
quite a good many orders In the hands
of buyers, with the result that prices on
that kind of stock did not show much, If
any, change an compared wtlh yesterday.
(still the movement was by no means ac
tive, buyers being inclined to take their
time In filling orders. It might be added
In this connection that prospective feeders
are already filling buying order with
commission men so that there is every
prospect of there being a good demand
right along for feeding aheep and lambs,
quotations on fat she-p and lambs: Good
