Omaha, fi; T.tnroln. 4.
The Indian was Scalped.
Winnebago Johnson did not last long
against the Rourke family, who went after
his wlp at the Mart of the game Wednes
day, forcing him to retire In the third
Inning. The rame wan Interesting from
the fact that, although Omaha had a small
liad. the Prohibitionists kept hitting the
boll and the Rntirkes kept making errors,
keeping the result In doubt until the last
man was retired.
Lincoln started after Willie Keeley at
the beginning and scored the first run on
a base on balla to Hoggle, a safe bunt by
Foxy Fox. an Infield out by Waldron and
a sacrifice fly by Thomaa.
Then came Omaha, also, the difference
being that the Rourkee scored two. Fisher
waited for his pass and Pendry popped
one In an attempt at sacrifice. King drew
a pass and Welch hit one through Johnson,
which Fox also fooaled. and let the ball
scoot out to Pavldson, while Fisher trotted
home. Ksne hit to Gagnler. who tried
to subdue King at. the plate, but the. wee
one slid under and the ump said he was
safe. Two runs.
In the third Johnson passed Pendry and
King hit safe. That was the end of the
Indian, as Fox gave him a layoff and
called upon a slight youth named Nagle.
Naglo was also wild and passed Welch,
and then forced. Pendry home by passing
Kane. Another run.
With two out In the fourth, Franck
threw wide on Sullivan's grounder and
that error was turned Into a run by a
base on balls to Nagle and a popup by
Ilotfgle, which fell so that either Kane or
Keeley or Cadman could have had It, but
a mlxup In the signals allowed It to go
safe and Sullivan scored.
Omaha came, back with two In the fifth
on two bases on balls, a single by Franck
and a double by Fisher. Lincoln scored
one In the sixth on Kane's -rror and Hog
glc's double. Keeley was hit In the eighth
and two Infield out, a base on balls and
Welch's single scored a run for Omaha.
Lincoln -made a strong rally In the ninth
and really looked dangerous for a while.
Fox opened with a single, his third hit.
Wnldron flew out to King and Thomas
singled, fiagnler hit a safe one down the
first base line, scoring Fox. Davidson and
Green could not keep up with the pace
set by those nhend of them and the game
was lost by Lincoln.
The Prohibitionists again this afternoon.

WOOD AND BYERS GO OUT
Harry J. l.eKi Transmlsslsalpp!
Champion, Proves Easy Victim
for Ralph Hnaslnnd of
Rlrerslde.
FLOSSMOOR, 111., July 2S -The defeat
of Warren K. Wood of Homewood, who
led the qualifying round with the remark
able score of 14., was the feature of the
third day's play In the western amateur
golf tournament at Homewood today. The
winner of the low medal score was put
out of the running by Robert A. Gardner
of Hinsdale by the score of up and 2 to
play. The defeat of Mason E. Phelps of
Midlothian by Nate Mears of Evanston
by 1 up. after a hard battle lasting twenty
holes, was another upset.
The defeat of seven out-of-town men
W'ho qualified was another surprise of
the day. Walter Fairbanks of Denver,
William Piddle of Indianapolis. Harold
Weber of Toledo, Harold Fisher of Den
ver, Arthur Stlckney of St. Louis, Harry
C. Legg of Minneapolis and Eben M.
Byers of Pittsburg fell by the wayside In
the opening round of the match play.
I.eatB Easy for Honalanrl.
Harry Legg, winner of the Transmlssls
alpp! championship at Des Moines a few
weeks ago, fell a comparatively easy vic
tim to Ralph Hoagland of Riverside. Legg
did not play a strong and consistent game.
while Hoagland was in his top form and
gathered In two brilliant 37s.
Gordon Copelard, the youthful golfer,
continued the run of form reversals by
the defeat of Eben M. Byers of Pittsburg,
former national champion.
Byers played far below his usual stand
ard, taking a 43 for the first nine holes
and getting Into trouble after the turn.
Copeland's margin was 4 up and 5 to play,
but he did not have long In which to cele
brate his victory, as Ralph Hoagland put
him out of the running by 3 up and 2 to
play In the second round.
The biggest surprise of the day was fur
nished by the defeat of Warren K. Wood
In the second round. Wood had played the
kind of golf that makes champions In the
qualifying round and the first round of
match play, and It was freely predicted
that he would at least live to see the final
round, but as golf Is no respecter of per
sons or records, he fell a victim to the
steady and consistent work of E. Gardner
by 4 up and 2 to play.
Both men played the bye-holes in this
match and Gardner made a 78 to the 80
of Wood, Gardner going out In a 39 to
Wood's 41, and both men coming In in 39.
