The sluggish and Irregular drift of prices was Inoonoluaive as an Index of speculative sentiment. Thst attitude continues one ot waiting; apparently on the action of the United States Steel directors at their meet ing Tuesday and on the tariff bill's enact ment. Uperstlons centered principally In the llarrlman Pacifies. tnlon Paclflo was strong, rising to Its previous record price of lUffi, and Southern Pacific was heavy, falling a full point under last night's level, i oe Reiieral list responded sluggishly to the sympathetic effect of first one and men the other movement. The lethargy of tne trading owes something to the growing oniltleratlon of the imminence of reason able demands upon the money market. Some borrowlne from the Interior Is re ported, attributed to crop moving require ments and t'ftir'.il.rn banks show a disposi tion to reduce the volume of their call loans In New Ymk, as the period ap proaches for Increased needs at home. ine Boutn American aemana tor goia ocarently remains unsatisfied. Of the autumn outlook, the London Statist says-. It Is evident that the price of wheat Is likely to remain high, that good prices will also prevail for raw cotton and that the demand for American wheat and Cot ton will be a heavy one. Further. It should be noted. Europe, more disposed than it has been for a long time to purchase American securities and bonds giving over 4 per cent and the combination of imports of capital Into the United States and large exports of produce Is likely to give America the power ot Im porting any reasonable amount 01 gold it may require to meet Its autumnal demand for currency." Recent Investigations have been made aa to the character of olive oils of a certain brand Imported into tne stnte, which have been charged with be ing a llttlo off color and purity. It Is the rule of the rhomlonl bureau to make a report upon the questioned sample" after analysis ami the ilenartement then cautions the manufacturer or Importer. Tho bleached flour cases that were booked for trial for June 9 have not yet reached the trial stage and may not until the question of the deleterlousnesa of tho bleached flour Is definitely dotermlned by the best chemist authority of the country. While the Department of Agriculture chemical bureau has ques tioned the healthfulness of bleached flour and Issued a conditional order against the further bleaching of flour, expert chemists representing the bleached flour interests hold that there la not the slightest danger In bleached flour, and that, on the other hand. It Is really mora healthful than the unbleached product. It la a rase ot doctors disagreeing, and so the prospect for any drastlo action against the flour bleachers by ths gov ernment Is extremely remote. In this connection It Is worthy of note that the purchsslng commissaries for the United States army will not purchase bleached flour, but insist on having the unbleached product for the use ot the troops. A process of flour adulteration of rye and wheat flour has recently been called to the attention of the ohomlcal bureau and this Is now being investigated by ths government laboratories, Kew York Mlntnsj Stocks.
