NEW YORK STOCKS AND BONDS Union Pacific and United Btatei Steel Dominate the Market. ' LATTXE SHOWS SOME REACTION Both Sloeka Show Weakness In the t lose 4 oarent rated Selling; Gives Dealers aa Impression of Liquidation. NEW YORK. Julv 21. The general tone of the stock market Is dominated by the action of one or two of the lavorite specu lative sxocks. The favorite since the ena of last week has been Union I'aelllc lo day United States Sttel exerted Its earlier dominant influence, but thla time on the uie rtf reer-tlftn The coimesilon of dealings yesieraay In few storks was an evidence of narrow ness of the market. The dependence on the operations of a few active speculator! to effect a nrlce movement Is another While stocks are being bought py tnese operators prices advance easily, out wnen they attempt to sell, a downward move ment la almost as ready, owing to the small eeneral snerulatlve demand Incited by the efforts of the napuuai speuuiaurc element. The concentrated selling today In a few of the most Influential stocks gave the Im pression of such attempts at liquidation of of Important accounts and served to Intimi date sentiment. There were rrpuiu vi sales of as much as 26,000 Bharcs of Read ing by a single house and sales of 2j,"0J shares of United Ststes Steel by another house proved inipreenlve. The upward start in union i-m-mu.piuvcu Insuf fli innt to overcome the stronssr In fluence of this apparently Informed selling. Union Pacific rose as nig" as uii in me first hour, establishing a new high record and giving hopes to those who have pre dicted for three days that the price waa to touch "double par. The adverse effect of the selling ot United States Steel proved too much for Union Pacific, and it shared In the later weakness of the general market. Yester day's reriort of the sale of the company s $1U,000,000 of Atchison preferred slock was looked upon today more as a movement to dispose of such holdings as subjected It to pursuit by the government authorities. An unfavorable Impression was made by the pointing out that the market price at tained by this stock offered the first oppor tunity for sale at a pront since the severe declines which followed its acquikltlon, while other holdings In the company's treasury are far short yet of the purchase price. The talk of an Intended increase In the Union Paclflo dividend was deprecated by persons connected with the property, and this proved discouraging to the speculative maneuvers in the stock. The serious storm reported from the Texas coast had some de pressing effect on Southern 1'acific, and was a growing depression on the wnoie later market. The Belling of United States Steel followed It down to 71, but seemed to lessen below that, as it has done below 2 earlier In the week. The suggestion of sympathetlo liquidation conveyttd . by this action was not relished. Iess wss heard of the Important devel opments regarding the stock to follow the return ot j. f. Morgan from aDroad, ana predictions were less confident of an In crease In the dividend rate next Tuesday. The nearer enactment of the tariff bin is coming In for Increasing consideration and for conjecture over its effect on stocks. The favorable results to follow the com pletion of the tariff revision have bepn kept before the eyes of stock operators for months, so that a question Is arising whether the number of early purchasers of stocks waiting to take advantage of the circumstances to sell may not prove favor able. The opinion was heard today that some of the selling of today might be by holders desirous to escape the possible em barrassment of too numerous company on the selling side when the tariff passes. The tone was decidedly weak at the last. Additional bills were made to engage ments of gold for shipment to Argentina tomorrow, which brought the total to well over $7,000,000, an unprecedented single shipment to that destination. Significant of the Indifference of the money market to this depleting force was the fact that the national bank depositories have returned to the treasury not only ths $9,000,000 of gov ernment deposits called for July 16, hut also all hut about $4,000,000 of the $16,000,000 called for repayment on August 16. In other words, It was a mod erate run for the middle of the week. However, there seemed to bs svttlc, ent cattle to supply the demand, which was far from urgent. The market on beef steers was very slow throughout the morning. In fact, the trade might best be described as slow to 10c lower than yesterday. Here and there something that Just happened to suit a buyer may have sold at prices not materi ally different from those that prevailed yesterday. As a general thing, however, the market was lower, as noted above. A few oows and heifers sold early at prices generally quoted as about steady, but the general market waa slow to lOo lower than yesterday. HOGS The market opened strong to 5c higher this morning on the best grades of snipping nogs, uulte a number of the best loads in sight sold on this basis, bringing prices irom i.id to ti.w. The packers, on the other hand, were very slow and it was lata in ths morning before buyers would even try to do business. Uy the time ihey started out advices from other market points were less favorable and Dark.'n' bids were generally 10915c lower right from the beginning. As might be expected, salesmen were bsckward about making any such radical concession and It was very much later than usual before any number of bogs on ths packing order had changed hands. In spite of every effort that they could maae to noia up values sellers were forced to cut loose on packers' terms; that Is, at prices ivnuc tower man yesterday. A good share of the late bogs sold around Ii iwj i , ana pretty good hogs at that. A feature of the trade today waa the discrimination against heavy hogs, buyers appearing to prerer ma ngnt and medium weights. Thus choice heavy hogs sold early at $7 .88. while shippers paid as high as tl.TO mr lanry ugniweignis. Representative sales Me. 41.. tl.. 13.. 64.. It... 44.. 6... 18.. 10... 77..
