Ninth Orade of Hastings High school. Bnglleh teacher, Mlts Kna.Braoh, Father, A. R, Williams. WANTED A nurse girt at Bt. When Mrs. Thornton's last maid left her, she was entirely without help to cafe for ' the children. Van, the eldest, aged 8 years, declared he would help his mother and little slstera, for was he not mother's Utile man? He had heard her say to himself. But Mrs. Thornton thought it beet to place a want-ad In ths Bee. In a few days a stout looking German girl made her appearance. Bhe was fairly good looking and looked healthy and good natured. Mrs. Thornton resolved to give ber a trial at lease The first time she combed Lela's long yellow hair, the oomb caught In a tangla, and their owner screamed with vigor, Anna was not used to children, but sh soon grew to bo very fond ot her little charges. But It was evident they did not like her, , even baby Maude cried when Anna came near hear, and all the children thought It ' quite - treat when papa or mamma took them for a walk or drive. Anna could not talk good English and was often seen crying over a letter bearing a foreign post-mark. One beautiful warm spring afternoon . Mrs. Thornton and the children went to the parks. Mrs. Thornton xat down on the seat and lifted the baby from her carriage, and tho other children clustered around her, begging for a story. For mamma ' was a famoua story teller. It was. Indeed, a pretty sight. The sun light came slanting through the trees, touching Lela's hair and turning It to gold. Roger sat on the grass, expectantly looking up Into his mother's brown eyes, ' so like hla own. - "Now for the story, mother," said Van. Then mother told of a little girl who ued to live far away over the ocean, with . her mother, father, and little brothers . and sisters. They were poor and had to be - very saving to keep tbelr little home. Fi nally when Anna, the oldest girl, was 1.3, t shel wanted to come to America to work and earn money so ber parents eould come here, too. Ho one morning she started away from home, for the first. They were all very sorry to have her go such a long distance by herself, but they thuught It waa for tho best. When she reached Omaha, she knew no one and was lonesome and homesick tpo, and then she saw our ad in The Bee, and came to be your nurse, Anna Rheames. "How do ro Ilk that kind of a story T Don't you think Ths Bee a fine paper for securing us such a nice glrlT "I guess we do," aald all the children as one, "and Is our Anna that girl you told us about T " ."I know how she feels," said 4-year-old Roger, "when I went to grandma's in Council Bluffs and stayed all night, I wanted my mamma all the time, . and . cried some when grandma waan't looking." Then tbe children laughed. Anna was seen coming down the walk with their , coats, for It was getting oooL "I'm going to glvo her my flowers," said Van. "8o am I." they all said, and tho child ren danced away to meet Anna, and were fully repaid by tho kiss pressed oa each rosy cheek. Cousinly Piece of Work to Do One Man Complains that His Eela tive Soaked Him with Tam pered Money. Held for Investigation by the United States secret service officers, Abe Singer, a shoemaker whose shop is at 617 South Thirteenth street, may find himself in serious trouble over a $1 greenback that was raised to a 15 bill, because, a he says,, he Just did a favor for bia cousfn, Harry Singer. Harry Singer, Eleventh and Davenport streets, a lunch stand keeper, went to Abe blnger Saturday and exchanged the questionable 25 bill for smaller change, according to the story the latter, told to H. 11. Mills of the government secret ser vice. But Harry, now affirms that he gave Abe a $6 gold ploce in, exchange, instead or tne bill. When Abe tried to get the bill changed Saturday night at S. Cohen's meat market, 814 North Sixteenth street, he succeeded and left with the change. The next day, when Cohen looked at the bill in daylight, he discovered how rank a piece of tampering It was and tried to find Abe Singer. Not locating him until Monday, Cohen did not complain to the police until then, when the case was turned over to the government officers, who examined Abe Singer and had him locked up and held at tho police station. Abe Singer admits passing the bill, but Harry Singer, whom Abe Implicates, de clares he never had the greenback. COUNTY CONVENTIONS CALLED BY CHAIRMEN OF PARTIES Republicans Meet Thursday la Pat terson Block and Democrats Sat arday at Jim Club Hooans. County Chairman Flynn has called a meeting of the democratlo committee for this evening to make arrangements for a county convention to be held Satur day and County Chairman Crawford has called a meeting of the republican commit tee for Thursday afternoon. The repub lican meeting will be held in the rooms of the Central Republican club In the Patter son block, Seventeenth and Farnam streets, and the democratic meeting will be held In the rooms of the Dahlman Democraoy club, Fifteenth and' Farnam streets. Section 118 of the amended election laws says: "There shall be held a delegate county convention In each county prior to the time ot holding the state convention provided for In this section, at which con vention the delegates to the state conven tion and the members of the oounty central committee shall be selected." The time Is too short in which to hold caucuses to select delegates to the county conventions and Chairman, Flynn said he thought the best thing to do would be to give precinct members of the old commit tee power to appoint delegates to tho county convention from their respective precincts. This method he believes will be clionea by the old committee when it meats this evening. Chairman raw ford has no program mapped out and will leave everything In the hands of the old committee when it meets Thursday.
