Defeats New York la Easy Game by
Score of 9 to 3.
DETROIT, July 17. Brockctt was rather
easy for Detroit, two' singles, two doubles
and a home run off Mclntyre In the first
two innings causing his retirement. Chea
bro did fairly well, but too late. New
York's batting did not count, because the
hits came with two out In too many cues.
It was a very ordinary exhibition, fea
tured only by Detroit's base running.
Morlarlty stole home, for the third time

HIGH TIME FOR GLIDDENTTES
Minneapolis Anto Clnb Gives Tourists
Day of Entertainment.
MINNEAPOLIS. Minn., July 17.-(Specla1
Telegram.) A day of rest, and a much
needed one, was given the Glldden tourists
today. Under the pilotage of members of
the Minneapolis Auto club, the drivers,
mechanics and tourists were taken to
Minnehaha Falls and Fort' Knelling this
morning. At the latter place a dress pa
rade of the Infantry, cavalry and moun
tain artillery troops was held, after which
a reception was tendered the Ollddenltes
at the officers' club at the fort.
At 2 p. m. a special train was taken to
Savage, Minn., the stock farm of M. W.
Savage. A race was given Including a
brush between Dan Patch and Minor Heir,
the two fastest harness horses In the world.
A special train brought the visitors back
at 4:30 o'clock.
The big event of the day was an Il
luminated parade of decorated cars through
the main streets of the city tonight. One
thousand cars were In line. The judges
of tho decorated cars were Fiank B.
Hower, manager of the tour; Charles O.
Glldden and Governor John A. Johnson.
Penalizations were few on the run In the
day before from LaCrossa to Minneapolis,
the Jewel runabout being the sole suf
ferer. 8ix points were set against this
car for being late. It - had nine points
against It before.
Disquieting reports of wretched road con
ditions In Iowa have been received by the
tourists here, and a number of them are
making preparations to carry planks and
block and tackle on their machines.
The gumbo roads of Iowa, the reports
say, have practically no bottom during wet
weather and there have been heavy In
termittent rains there for two weeks past.
Some of the companies represented on the
tour took the precaution to send scouts
out along the route after the cars left
Chicago, and it Is from these men that
the rumors of prospective trouble have
come. Should these reports prove true,
It Is anticipated that the list of penalized
cars will be at least doubled by the time
the cars reach Council Bluffs Wednesday
night.
Tomorrow the tourists will be taken to
Lake Mlnnetonka. Dinner will be served
at the Tonka Bay hotel'and In the after
noon cars will take the men to the Auto
mobile Country club.
The start from Minneapolis will not be
made until 8 o'clock Monday morning, to
allow the people of the city an opportunity
to eoe the cars cross the tape.

Dorchester Wins a Forfeit Game from
Uhlckler Standing- of I.eagne.
DORCHESTER. Neb.. July 17. (Spe
cial.) Dorchester won a forfeit game
from Shickley here yesterday by the
score of 9 to 0. The Dorchester lads
took their positions on the field at 3:16,
and Mr. Wampler toased the required
number of balls, and Umpire Sklnkle then
forfeited the game to Dorchester. The
Shickley team refused to play the sched
uled game, stating they would forfeit the
game rather than play with some of their
regulars out of the line-up. This Is the
reason Dorchester lost most all of their
games away from home, by putting sub
stitutes In place of regulars, the first of
the season. The 200 Dorchester fans
were very much disappointed, aa a close
game was expected.

Noiseless Car Wheels.
The Chicago street railway companies
have ordered fiO.Ono steel car wheels. The
order Is peculiarly interesting to city
dwellers, because It requires the wheels
to be noiseless that l.s.ihey will sroe
three times longer than wheels hfir.ct'i
fore cast before they wear flat. The limit
of endurance of the wheels of new stVIe
Is HO.OiiO miles, against 40.000 of the t1d
kind. Moreover, the weight of each car
Is 800 pounds less a remarkable exampls
of economy of material with increased en
durance. If this economy proves real in
the test of experience at Chicago, It will
foreshadow the adoption of the more dur-'
able wheel by traction companies In many
other cities. Thus the nervous wear ajld
tear of noises Incident, but not necessary,
to urban life will be materially reduced.
It Is claimed that the new wheels will als41
Increase the safety of general rnllway'
travel, especially In winter, as they are
less susceptible to frost and to consequent
cracking under high speed and strain.
