Oats 81 CHICAGO CHAIN AND PROVISIONS Wheat for July Delivery Shows Farther Decline. CHICAGO, July W.-Wheat for July de livery declined still further today, follow Ing the sever slump of the previous ses sion, final quotations showing a net loss f lHo. The mora deferred months closed firm at gains of M to HHo. Corn, oats and provisions were weak. The wheat market was a nervous affair nd price moved over a wide range. The JUly delivery waa heavy th preater part of th day and the price at no time rose to th level of yesterday olose. The dis tant deliveries, however, wer firm and with tha exception of a brief period early In the session, held at a moderate advance compared with final figures of the previous day. Decided weakness was manifested during the first few minutes of trading owing to quite general selling of July because of clt-ar weather In the harvest belt In this country. As a result of these realizing nales July sold off o fl.M1. after-opening 15!24o lower, at tl.2iai.2SV4. Some of th leading elevator Interests, however, wer free bidders for th deferred months and this demand soon caused a rally, particu larly In tha distant deliveries. During the remainder of the day July continued er ratic, but other months showed consider able firmness. The heaviness of the July option was due chiefly to the clear weather in the winter wheat atatea, which gave promise of an Increased movement of new wheat at an early date. Arrivals today at Kansas City and Bt. Louis agKregated 140,000 bushels. aHainst 74,000 bushels the same day last week and the price of the cash grain at thoK.e points was off 204o per bushel. Re ceiving houses here also reported more liberal offerings from the country and pre dicted a much heavier novement next week. News of a bullish nature Included an udvance of ltf2Hd in spot wheat at Liver pool and an advance of lftlHd in futures ttiera. claims of sales of wheat here for export and of Sales nf flnnr at CI Iju.i. 'J lie highest point reached by July during the day was 1 .23 and the final quotation '' u udiuw mac figure. Heavy liquidation of July holdings caused general weakness In the corn mar ket. The market closed weak with prices unchanged to ITio lower compared wlth the previous closj, July being af8o. The resumption of harvesting in Illinois uurt Iowa due to clear weather prompted mineral selling of oats that resulted In a wouk market all day. Th close was woak with prices I43 l,o lower. Provisions coined a shade to Jo lower. The leading future ranged as follows; Temp. Rsln. Max. Mln. Inches. No. of Central. Stations, Chicago, III Columbus, O De Moines, Ia.... Indianapolis, Ind.. Kansas City, Mo.. Louisville, Ky Minneapolis, Minn. Omaha, Neb Bt. Louis, Mo Heavy rains occurred within tha twenty-four hours In Ohio, Indiana Kentucky and lighter rains In all other portions of th oorn and wheat region, ex cept th Des Moines district. NEW YORK STOCKS AND BONDS Steel and Southern Railroad Group Occupy Market'! Attention. HEAVY IMP0BTS FLOWdO IN Improvement ot Flood Conditions ia athwest Haa Favorable Elffert oa Railroad Stock Condi tio! of Money Market. NEW TORK. July 14-Cnlted States Pteel remained the center of Interest In the stock market today, but did not so nearly monop olise all of the Interest as In yesterday's one sided market. The general tone was firm In spite of exceeding dullness and special stocks made sharp advances. The southern railroad group was consistently strong, and this movement might be ascribed to the weak tone in the cotton market following reports of rain In Texas to break the serious drouth there. The Improvement In flood conditions In the southwest was an additional Inrmence In favor of aome of that group. There was a good deal of discussion of the money market In view of the large changes Indi cated for the week In banking Items. The repayment of government deposits and the gold exports to Argentina made require ments on the New York banks lino laat Friday of tU.000.000. The Inflow of cash from the Interior oon tlnues, although on a diminishing scale, so that an offset to this aecreas is to oe reckoned, but It is estimated that the net decrease In cssh may reach the neighbor hood of tk.00u.0u0. Of even gieater interest was the evidence already at hand of fur ther depletion of cash next week, unless some movement should spring up to off set the heavy demands of the export move ment of gold to Argentina. The amount of gold to go out to that destination next week from New York Is already fixed at $8,000,000 or over. The proportions of this movement are proving formidable to other money markets and London discount rates continue to harden on account or It lit spite of Lion dnn's ability to call on New York to finance the demand. besides the large movement of grain from iouth America to make good the lack of our own exportable surplus government financiering in tne South American republic is sn Important element In the demand for gold. Th official report of our foreign trade for June sufficiently explains why foreign ers are aoie to control tne international exchange". The deficiency In foodstuffs exports restricts the status 01 outgo, while Imports have risen 12.587,000 over those of June last year, leaving a $7,000,000 excess value of Imports. Customs receipts at the port ot New York prove that this Import movement is unaiminisnea, payment aur- Ing the present week averaging over $1,000,- 000 a day. Customs officials express the belief that this rush of Imports Is based on expecta tion that higher rates ot autie wouia oe adopted In the tariff bill which might be avoided by early importation. By reason of the unfavorable merchandise Daiance tne payment of Europe's debt to South Amer ica can be commanded by remittance from New York. The news from Washington that a Pan ama canal bond issue is likely to be made at an early date and under a comprehen sive authorisation for the whole cost of the canal opens up another question to be considered In the money and government financial relations. The loan market waa perceptibly firmer today In consonance with these conditions. For time loans there were fractional advances In Interest rates. Six months' money loaned at 3V4 per cent. Not only the over-the-year maturity, which has been most affected heretofore, but the shorter maturities were advanced. An ad vance In th price of pig Iron was held as confirmatory ot the cheerful confidence reported In the steel trade. The successive stase ot the advance In United mates 6leel to new high records were greeted rather as a tribute to the market manage ment than to trade development. Bonds were Irregular. Total sales, par value, $4,192,000. United States bonds were unchanged on call. Number of sae end 1-nding quotations on stock were as follows: Omars C. B tt ST V Omilii C. B. Weekly Review of Trade say! Each succeeding week now haa become A record of advancing activity in Industry and commerce. The extraordinary expan sion In the Iron and steel trade continue, and whereas a short time ago th prob lems were how to find business, now th problem la becoming that of meeting or dets with adequate dispatch. The general business situation Is Im proved with progress in the tariff revision. The fiact Mint banking credit in the large centers continues wtth rates for loans low ts significant n the reserve power for hleher expansion. Rising pi lees In cotton goods snd cotton arns continue as an linpirtant feature In the wholesale dry goods marVet. Surplus slocks are being released at values thnt are still below the psrlty of 13-cent cotton. Woolen and worsted fabrics are being opened for spring in men s wesr and dr goods, and buvrrs are active. In under wear and hosiery the buying has been on a larger scale for spring and also for fall. Many knitting mills are forced to run overtime to catch up with orders. The demand' for hides Is less sctlve, but prices are firmly esiahlished. The leather trade Is quiet, but prices on all varieties sre strong and high. There Is a betier trade in the shoe market, but new btisl-net-s Is not In proportion to the large number of buyer now at Pnston. Un certainty regarding the final dlspofi'lnn of the hide duly deters buyers from placing their orders. It 11 A D !4 T It E K T ' sTRK VI KVV OF TRADE aloslneavs la of Fairly Good Volume for This Season of Year. NEW YORK, July 16.-Hradstreefs Re view of Trade tomorrow will say: Despite Irregularities In crop and wi ather conditions, midsummer Influence in ttsds and Industry and conservatism In placltur orders ahead, business Is of fairly good volume fur the seson of the year and shows a perceptibly steady advance toward normal proportion. In retail trade clearance ssles are uni versal, but there are numerous reports that reduced purchasing power offsets the stimulus offered bv this means nf Inducing buying. Wholesale trade for Immediate de livery I ot light volume. Fall trade re ports are still relatively best tn all brunches Chicago seems to he the must active market tn the country, with the northwest coming next as resitrds favor able reports. There are evidences that ad vancing prices, as for Instance, of cotton goods, are causing some hesitation among buyers for the future. Industry continues n be expanding, iron and steel leading.
