tnark at the opening. The new crop fu
tures weakened because of profit-taking
and new buying wa not sufficient to up
port value at yeaterday bulge.
Clearing weather Is a bearish feature
ana new wheat may be expected to arrive
if these condition last.
The corn market la weak and favorable
weather la bringing more corn from the
country. Receipt should increase from
now on.
Wheat waa vteady eariy, but sagged
later, owing to a lack of support. Profit

yesterday. New from the fields advise
that new wheat will toon be on the mar
ket. Corn waa shaky and a break was evi
dent. Canh price eased off on better re
ceipt and favorable weather conditions.

ing The weather has cleared In the upper
Mississippi and upper MIfsoutI valley, and
I generally clear throughout the west and
northwest. Temperatures, are slightly

Wheat Hleee Still Higher, and Theu
Falls Again.
CHICAGO, July li. Wheat for July de
livery performed a lofty tumbling act on
the board of trnde today, first advancing
I cents above the high record mark for
the season, established on the preceding
seaclon. and then dropping nearly 7 centH.
The best mark reached today was J1.29.
At the close the price were S1"' below
the final figures of the previous day.
Corn and oat were weak, but provisions
wera firm.
The selling of the new high mark for
July wheat was accomplished on Initial
transactions, option quotations ranging
from 1.27V to 11.29. A number of belated
short were anxlou bidder at the start,
and this caused the fresh advance. Dis
tant dellverle, however, were not disposed
to follow the lead of the new month, and
opened weak at declines of a shade to
if'(.o. The heaviness of the deferred
month was due to more favorable weather
condition In thai west and tire south-west,
the weather map showing no rain, except
a few scattered showers. The forecast
also was for a continuance of generally
fair weather.
The demand for the July option wa sat
isfied early In the day, and when It he
came evident that some of the big hold
er wera taking profits, there was con
siderable realising by maller longs. This
resulted In a teady falling off In prlcei.
A trading progressed, bearish sentiment
was augmented by a severe slump In the
price of cash wheat at southwestern mar
kets, particularly at Bt. , Ia)uIs, where a
break pf 7c to 8c was recorded. The
weakness of the cash grain in the south
west was due to Increased arrivals of
new wheat, total receipts at the two lead
ing center being 164,000. compared with
66,000 the same day laat week. A re
ported freer movement in Illinois also
Inspired selling here. The low point for
July llI'i wa reached late In the day,
and although the price rallied more than
1 cent. entiment In the pit vva decidedly
bearish at the close, with July at 31.23,
September closed at lVrt2c below yeater-
day' final rigure at i.iu.
The corn market was weak throughout
the entire day. The market cloed weak,
with price K"to to lc below the prevlou
close, with July at 71Sc.
Resuming of harvest operation in Illi
nois and Iowa, owing to Improved wather
condition, inspired free selling of oats
throughout the entire session. The market
weak, with prlcea ,o to W'W lower.
- ProvUlon were firm all day. Prices at
the close wer lOo lower to 16o higher.

practically made the stock market today.
A large proportion of the total d'-allngs
waa In that on stock, and such activity
and strength a there were in other stocks
were almost wholly In sympathy with th
movement In It There wa explicit in
formation from wholly truatworthy
ource of the healthy Improvement In
progress In the Iron and steel trade.
While thl news butteressed United Slate
Steel, and gave material aid to the con
ductors of the stock market campaign
In this campaign the price movement was
a triumph of adroit and resourceful market
management as well.
All acoredlted organ of the steel trade
spoke without reserve of the more cheer
ful tone that pervades the whole trade
and the detail of the condition were con
vincing on thl point.
Home falling off In the rate of booking
of new order wa held of no account In
view of the length of time for which orders
on hand will keep the mills busy. Man
ufacturers are refraining from accepting
orders further ahead at present prices
and increased prices are demanded for
early deliveries on old orders. The ad
vance in the price of bars, platea and
shape by some of the Independent teel
companies Is believed to pre.sage an ad
vanoe by the principal produecrs.
The departure of J. I'. Morgan from
England yesterday on his return for New
York was used with great effect by the
bulls on the stock, notwlthmandlng the
protestations of Mr. Morgan associates
thnt his reuirn at this time v. in acrorl
ance with previous plans. The exercise
of Mr. Morgan's influence In favor of a
llveral dividend policy witn regard to
United Stales Steel on previous occasions
was pointed out.
On purelv professional side admiration
was aroused b the skill with which the
stock has bean handled In the neighbor
hood of 70, which apparently was a criti
cal point In the upward movement. The
caution with which the price approached
that figure, the enormous sales nrougnt
out as soon as It had reached it. and the
timidity, now believed to have been
feigned, with which the bulls retreated In
the face of thla flood of selling, made the
bears bold In selling short on a large
scale In the neighborhood of that figure.
When the s'.ock forged upwards to above
that figure In the first few minutes today
and later extended It rose to above 71, the
uncovered short Interest, which had
been thus encouraged, were made to serve
the purpose of the bulls In helping In the
advance by force purchase.
The expiration of the period for ex
change of southern Paolifo preferred Into
common stock revived the rumor of an
exchange of two shares of Vnlon Pacific
preferred for one of the common stock,
and ( counted for the freBh spurt In the
preferred stock. The metal group was
most affected In sympathy with United
State Steel. The reaction in the wheat
market and the promise of more favorable
weather for the harvest were helpful to
stocks. . ,
Bonds were irregular. Total sales, par
value. J3.M4.OO0. United States Bonds were
unchanged on call.

CATTLE Receipt of cattle this morn
ing were very light, only Blxty-alx car
being reported In, but still the total for the
week to data I quite large as compared
with the same time last week.
The trade on beef steers was very slow
from start to finish and prices uneven. In
spite of the fact that the offerings were
light, the demand was not sufficiently
brisk to put any lire into me traae. inus,
some sellers who had desirable kinds were
generally quoting the market a slow, but
teady, with now and then some one who
had a bunch that just happened to strike
buyer fancy, thought that he got out
o a little better advantage than on yes
terday. Anything that was undesirable,
Filal.i or rough was not only slow, but a
ItUe lower than yesterday. As a whole
the market could not b conalderad as
satisfactory ' from a sailer's standpoint.
The market on cows and heifers was
also uneven, and there was no very great
change In any direction. Buyer picked
out here and there cattle that Just bulled
them for which thy would pay price that
looked If anything a little strong. On the
other hand tha general run of cow stuff
was slow and no more than steady with
yesterday.
The supply of stockers and feeders was
small, but, as usual this late In the week,
very few were wanted. Such cattle as
there were on sale generally commanded
about stea'dy prices.

HOGS Today's hog market was In very
much the Pima condition as yesterday, that

The trade in that kind aa reasonably
