Through the efforts of Postofflce In
spector Swenson another alleged member
of the notorious J. C. Maybray gang of
"big store" swindlers was lodged behind
the bars of tha county Jail In Council
Bluffs yesterday. T. R. Robinson, who
was taken Into custody at Farmlngton,
la., and brought to this city yesterday, Is
charged with conspiracy in the case of
E. O. Allspaugh of Terre Haute, Ind., who
was fleeced out of tl.fiOO on August 6 of
last year In Council Bluffs on a fake
wrestling match. i
An Information against Robinson was
filed by Mr. Swenson In the offloe of
Justice Oardlner on Saturday of last
week. Not wishing to trust tha arrest
of tha man to tha looal authorities at
Farmlngton, Inspector Swenson went there
with Captain L. B. Couslna, deputy sher
iff and district court bailiff of this olty.
and succeeded In locating and arresting
Robinson Tuesday. Robinson's bail pend
ing a preliminary hearing was fixed by
Justice Oardlner at 12.000, In default of
which ha waa committed to the county
jail.
Robinson was placed In the cell re
cently vacated by John R. Dobbins, an
other alleged member of the gang, who
secured his release from the county Jail,
where he had been since February 16, by
furnishing bonds In the aggregate sum
of $6,000 Monday. Robinson declined to be
interviewed by newspapermen.
Robinson, It Is alleged, acted the dual
role of "stoerer" and one of the fake
wrestlers In Allspaugh's case. In the In
formation filed In Justice Gardiner's court
by Postofflce Inspector Swenson. Robin
son Is charged with conspiring with W. H.
Barton and J. C. Maybray to defraud and
deprive E. O. Allspaugh of ll.6f0. Bar
ton, It was stated yesterday by County
Attorney Hess, was formerly proprietor of
a restaurant In Terre Haute, and was
personally acquainted with Allspaugh.
Since the arrest of Maybray and other
members of the "swindling syndicate,"
Barton Is said to have left Terre Haute,
and has so far eluded the efforts of Mr.
Swenson to locate him.
It will be remembered that among the
books and papers found by the federal
officers in Maybray's trunk at the time of
his arrest In Little Rock, Ark., was a
small red leather memorandum book, con
taining a partial Hat of "Mikes" and an
Itemized account of Maybray's share of
the plunder. An entry in this little book,
which Is now with the other papers and
memoranda found In tha trunk In the
possession of the United States authori
ties, reads as follows: , "August 6, E. O.
Allspaugh, Terre Haute, Ind., $1,600."
No Indictment has as yet been returned
against Robinson, his Identity as an al
leged "steerer" only having recently be
come known to Mr. Swenson. No time
for the preliminary hearing has been set
as Robinson desires to first get In com
munication with his attorney. The dis
trict court grand jury will convene Au
