CHICAGO GRAIN AND PROVISIONS
Wheat Prices, Owing to Crop Reports,
. Shaw Fresh Advaace.
CHICAGO, ' July 10. Further delay to
harvesting due to additional rain In th
winter wheat belt west of the Mississippi
river caused a fresh advanoa in wheat
prices today, final quotation showing
gains of Ho to 144le compared with the
previous close. Corn and oats also ware
firm.' but provisions' were easy.
The weather bureau reported heavy rain
during the last twenty-four hour In Ne
braska, Kansas and Missouri and western
lowa and predtoted additional shower to
pight and tomorrow. With these unfavor
able oondttions for harvesting prevailing
over such a wide territory, bull in the
wheat- pit took advantage to force price
higher, and. short, alarmed at the poor
. prospect of any material increase in re
ceipts of new . wheat, covered freely, thus
augmenting bullish sentiment July mani
fested the greatest strength and at one
time was tip lo compared with the pre
vlous olose.
The first car of new No. I red wheat
reached Chicago today. It came from
southeastern Illinois and sold at (1.24 per
bushel. ,
Lata In the day there waa considerable
selling of July and buying of September
by leading holders of the former option to
relieve tne congestion in the current month.
As a result, prices reacted considerably
irom mo top. During the day July sold be
tween 41.18 and $1.19. The close was strong,
with July at 11.18.
The feature of trading in the corn pit
wa active buying of September delivery
by leading bull, resulting In th price of
inai option aavancing 14.0 from yesterday.
Trading In July, which advanced nearly to
yesteraay, was comparatively quiet today.
owing to light offerings.. The cash grain
waa again in strong demand, wtlh prices
up ic ana ssies toaay aggregating nearly
806,000, bushels. The market closed strong,
with price -Rc to Tafalc above vesterdav.
Oat were firm In sympathy with wheat
and corn. Shorts were eager bidders for
July early In the day, but demand waa
less urgent during the final half. The
niarnet closed rirm. wtlh prices unchanged
to Hake higher.
Trade In provisions wss extremely light
and sentiment was bearish. Prices at the
close were Rc higher to 7o lower than

NEW TORK. July 10. Today' stock
market was analogous to those earlier In
the week. The dull and drooping ten
dency was the reflection of the disap
pointment of speculative hopes of a re
vival of general demand for stocks, aa a
consequence of th favorable develop
ments of the week.
The demand today continued torpid, and,
while the selling pressure was not urgent,
the dribbling of offering was sufficient
to carry price Irregularly downward.
There wa a good deal of attention to
wards Washington on account of the arri
val of the tariff bill at the critical stage
of the conference. It la realised In the
financial community that the prolonged
discussion in both house of eongress may
be rendered nugatory. In Independent par
ticulars by compromises In the conference.
The particular Interest attached to the
report of objection by President Taft to
the double taxation Involved In- the amend
ment to the corporation earnings tax pro
vision. Including "holding companies. "
The Financial Chronicle estimated the
rate of increase In June gross earnings of
railroads over June of laat year at 146
per cent on returns from one-third of the
total mileage of the country. The
same . authority, however, points out
that In June last year the decrease In
gross earnings for a similar mileage and
In comparison with the previous year
reached a percentage of 20.89.
Some of yesterday's weakest stocks
made partial recoveries. A general hard
ening movement in the second hour cor
rected the droop of the first and left final
price changes Insignificant. The discrep
ancies between the bank statement of av
erages and of actual condition which have
come to be expected, throw Increasing au
thority on the actual condition aa the more
reliable statement. It was there that the
known movements of money for the week
found their reflection in the cash gain,
while the repayment of loans to the banks
naturally following the passing of the July
settlements, were also reported In the act
ual condition in contrast with the loan
contraction of the averages.
Bonds were lrregulsr. Total sates, par

CATTL.E There were four or five cars
of cattle reported In, but three of them
were direct to packers and not offered for
sale, so that there was really no market.
For the week receipts have ahown a mod
erate decrease aa comparedVwlth last week,
but a large Increase as compared with a
year ago.
Handy lightweight steers of good quality
have been free seller all thl week, buy
er giving them the preference over all
other grade. The market on cattle of that
kind ha been steady or a little stronger
every dsy, with the exception of Wednes
day, when there was a little reaction. At
the close of the week the market Is a little
stronger and the feeling a little better
than one week ago. While heavy cattle
have been less actlva sellers they have
nevertheless held up very well and at the
close of the week are generally quoted as
steady with a week ago.
Very few cornfed cows are coming at
the present time, but what few there were
have met with very ready sale all week at
satisfactory prices. The best grades of
grass fed cows have also sold very well,
but fhe general run of grass stock has had
a steadily downward tendency and at the
close of the week the market Is 25fi40o
lower on that kind of cattle. It Is hsrdly
necessary to add that this decline Is largely
on account of the liberal receipts of south
ern cattle at most all market points, which
taken the place to a great extent of cow
stuff. . Veal calves declined 2&360o during
the week.
There ha been comparatively little busi
ness doing In Blockers and feeders this
week, both reeelpta and demand being
moderate. Still It Is sppsrent that ths
country wants cattle, but the prevailing
idea see ma to be that present prices are
too high and that they will go considerably
lower when western rangers begin moving
more freely. Thua with the country hold
ing back waiting for lower prices the mar
ket this week hss had a downward ten
dency, being at the close of the week
4 On lower than last week.

HOOS The market opened about steady

but the market on packers was slow, some
of th buyers holding back -and not try

was that the market was at no time very
a olive, easing off, closing aa much aa to
lower than yesterday In some cases. A
considerable proportion of the hogs sold at
$7.40cT7.7t and on up as high aa $7 86.
Receipts of hogs this week have been
quit liberal, showing a decided Incresse
over last week and a very heavy Increase

' SHEEP There were a few load of Cali
fornia spring lambs on sale this morning,
but not enough to make a market. The
big end of the shipment sold at $7.76, villi
a small string at $6.00. The market, if
Buch It can be called with very light re
ceipts, Is quotably steady.
As was noted yesterday, th live mutton
trade at this point during the week has
held up exceedingly well as compared with
the sheep values on other markets. While
the total advance ' Is not by any means
spectacular, the fact that there Is an ad
vance at all Is worthy of note. Medium
weight killing stock In sheep and lambs
is about a quarter higher than last week's
close. Weighty muttons met with an In
different reception, but prices on this class
of stork show no perceptible decline for
the week and are generally steady. Re
ceipts for the week total about 9.000 head,
as compared with almost 16,000 liead last
week and 80.000 for the same week last
year. The bulk were range sheep and
while there haa been only a sprinkling of
feeding msterials on sale, demand la broad
and prospects of the feeder sheep market
iook exceptionally bright.
