NEW YORK, July l-Th lethargy of
th speculation waa strikingly demon
strated by the alugslsh response today to
th highly Important government report
of July 1, condition of th cereal crop.
Evidently, this wa partly du to the
plain prediction of th favorable charter
report, which came for several day from
efflolal state report and from trustworthy
rrlvate estimates. Thla gave opportunity
or speculation to anticipate the govern
ment report.
From th aotlon, both of the stock and
cereal market after th abearance of
th report. It appeared that this pre
liminary aotlon had been overdone and
the realising movement forced price In
a direction contrary to the signification
of th crop figure a a coneequence. Thus
It Happened that price or itooni neciinen
and of grain advanced on a prediction
that promised a cereal crop, exceeding In
value than ever before produced In th
country,
Th nromtard yield of corn rising to

a crop considerably below the bumper

proved as to have made up In large part
th earlier deflulaney and to have brought
th condition well above th ten year
average.
Th Indicated total wheat crop of 663,
000.000 bushels, estimated on th basis of
the high price reported today, for cash
wheat of the new harvest, promises so
profitable a return to the country' agri
cultural Interest aa to afford a substantial

prosperity founded aa that Is on the wel

point.
Today'a good news proved Inadequate to
Incite such a demand and thla fact gav
rise to some anxiety on the part of holders
who had bought stock with the Intention
of reselling at a profit, when the promise
of favorable developments was realised
Reasons for the sluggish demand were
not clear. One deterrent Influence wa
th amount of a mention given to the
direction taken by government measure
agalnat "the holding company." This la a
financial device upon which much of the
efficacy of great corporation ta dependent.
The fact that at Washington th senate
wiped out of the tariff bill th exemption,
accorded to holding companies from the
corporation earning tax, while at Louis-
vllle the attorney general In the cabinet
wa formulating a proposed measure which
would, in hi own language, "go rar toward
their destruction," was taken rather
ominously by financial observers. 'Prices
