AY bent Prlcea Dreak Sharply on Ac
count of Crop Report.
CHICAGO. lit.. July 8 Wheat prices
broke sharply today following general
aolllng prompted by greatly Increaaed re
ceipts of new wheat at southwestern grain
centers and by glowing new crop reports.
At the close prices were lc to 2c lower
than last Friday. Corn and oats closed
weak, but provision were steady.
Whent wan somewhat demoralised after
the first half hour, and price declined
from lSo to 2c from the high point of
the session. The slump was due to the
liberal arrival of new wheat at Ht. luls
mt Kan:-as City, and consequent falling
away of caHh prlcea at thone points. Vari
ous Htaie reports Indicated material Im
provement in the condition of tha fall
own crop, and there was a large Increase
officially reported In the acreage sown to
wheat In the Canadian northwest.
The first car of new wheat arrived her
today from Indiana, and waa offered for
ale at the .sample tables as "No grade
wheat." Kansas City and 8t. Louis each
fl-eported- arrivals of . carloada. -with 8.000
BaokH additional, by water at the patter
point. An a result of this heavy move
ment, caul! pri'-es at ft. Ixiuls alone were
eald to have been off 2o compared with
Friday' quotations. The market closed
extremelv weak, at almost the bottom.
Splendid prospects of the new crop of
corn, as Indicated In numerous reports
from all sfctlons of the corn belt, caused
a break of from lHc to SipSc In that
grain. July was especially weak owing
to a general raid by local bears and on
selling by tired holders. July sold between
sn'HiC a no iSS. The market closed
deoidedly weak, with July at 67o.
i)m riecitneri In svmoathy with wheat
'and corn, but the market was relatively
niieh stronger than either. The close w
weak with prices unchanged to So lower
compared with Friday.
Provisions . closed steady with prices

NEW YORK. July 6 -There were hopes
Indulged by the professional element In
me speculation that today wa to wit
ness the revival of active Interest In the
tock market. That hope was disappointed,
as the meager total of the day's transac
tions sufficiently shows. There was noth-
ng to show that Important speculative in
terests were Into that market.
A large sentimental Influence waa exer-
Ised by the heavy tone of l"nltd States
Steel. The selling of that wa baed on
reiteration of the previous reports from
Psris that the plan to Introdure It on the
art bourse had heen rejected Dy tne
authorities. This report met with the con-
radtotlon from the Paris ornce or tne
bankers concerned, which has accompanied
each repetition of the report of the failure
of the plan. The denials, however, aid not
revive the tone ot imitea ruaiee oteei in
he market. The reports from trade sources
of the good rate of recuperation In the In
dustry wer equally without benefit to the
slock.
Beside the favorable steel trade report.
much attention was given In the financial
district to the crop news. Reports from
he agricultural official or tne states of
lllnola. Missouri and Ohio, which appeared
today, were accepted as foreshadowing a
highly favorable report on Thursday by
he government bureau on the condition
of both winter wheat and corn. The pros
pect of the corn crop Indicated both by
these states' reports and by private esti
mates were called brilliant.
A substantial Improvement to be shown
In winter wheat for June Is accepted a
foregone conclusion. The likelihood of
further exports of gold this week, both
to Argentina and to Pari, laoked Influ
ence on stocks for the same reason. The
rapid progress being made with the tariff
bill in its latter stages, especially the
readiness with which the corporation earn
ings tsx and the Income tax amendment to
the constitution, were accepted In the sen
ate, was cited ss of possibly ominous im
port to capitalistic Interest In some of tha
day's discussion In Wall Street. The clos
ing tone of the market was uncertain.
Bonds were steady. Total sales par
value, $4,404,000. United States 2a and 3s
declined per cent on call.
Bales and range of Prices on tha Stock
exchange today were as follows:
balal. HIH. Low cinne.
Excessive rain continued genersl In the
western portion of the Corn and wheat
region during the last twenty-four hours
and moderately heavy rains In the eastern
portion. The weather continues cool
throughout the belt.

CATTLE Receipts ol oairte this morning
cumbered 168 cars, a very fair run consid
ering that It was the day after a holiday
and also taking into account the heavy
rains and also the Impassable condition of
many country roads. The trade, as a whole,
was 'without any very new or Interesting
features, dullness being th chief charac
teristic. The market opened with some little In
quiry for choice light cornfed steers and
offerings of this kind commanded steady to
possibly a little stronger prices in soma
cases. On the other hand, half fat cattle
and unfinished cattle, even light grades,
were slow and, if anything, lower than yes
terday or last week. Big, heavy cattle,
even of good quality, were very Blow to
move, buvers nealectlna them to a great
extent, their orders apparently calling for
the lighter kinds. Thus th traas on heavy
cattle was dull from start to finish and no
mora than steady at the best.
There wa no noteworthy change In the
market ror cows and neirers. 1'rioes. as a
rule, looked about steady with yesterday
and both buyers and sellers, in most cases.
were quoting It that way. As high as (610
was paid for western grass neirers or very
rood oualltv.
There wer a few storkera and feeders
In sight, but holders did not appear to reel
that they secured any better prices, In fact,
If anything, they were Inclined to regard
the market a little lower unless It might
be on somethlnr right desirable.

HOGS Hogs were extremely slow and
dull this morning, dullness, In fact, being
the leading feature of the morning s mar
ket. It was very late before any bust
ness of consequence had been transacted
and It waa well along toward midday be
fore anything like a clearance was ef
fected. Shippers paid possibly a little
stronger prices for a few selscted loads
early in the morning, but the demand
from that source waa very limited and
there was very little trading dona on that
basis. On the other hand packers were at
no time willing to pay better than steady
prlcea and they were late about getting
started even at that. Thus the general
market might be quoted as opening slow
and steady. Later on the market became
weak as well as dull, closing a little easier
than yesterday. A considerable Proportion
of all the hofcs sold at $7.7037.80 and on up
aa high as 87.92H for the best heavy hogs,
6HEEP It was a slow, uncertain trade
In the sheep barn this morning. A oouple
or loads of Idaho wethers were weighed
up at th opening at $4.40, a flat nickel
advance over yesterday on the same anal
Ity of stock and almost a dime better If
allowance Is made for wet fleeces. This one
sale, however, proved to be a false flash
and nothing happened until late in the
morning to glv th trad any semblance
or lire.
The fact that receipts wer light and
the trade unusually slow gives weight to
the recent threat of producers that unless
market prices Improve, supply would be cut
orr to a large extent. Whett.er retail de
mand is of sufficient volume to boost
values with tha help ot limited receipts ap
pears doubtful.
The trade continued slow throughout th
morning, with prices weaker at the close.
The general market la quotable at steady
with yesterday. Th bulk of supplies con
sisted of range stock from Idaho, Oregon
and Montana.
