entitled to the home that he wants whether
it suits the architect's cultured taste or
not. It is an architect's place to advise
and persuade, but not to dominate or dic
tate. It Is his business to consider the
home builder's requirements, ideas and
building funds and produce the most con
venient and best looking house possibly
under the conditions imposed.
Question Do you think it the proper
thing to build a $6,000 home on a 1500 lot
50x130 feetT It Is out In the suburbs and
looks good to ma, but am afraid that I
will eventually be in a neighborhood of
cheap houses. What Is your experience T
Answer Don't build a good house on a
cheap lot. Cheap lota Invite "shacks", liv
ery .tables and the like. These never
make good neighbors. Remember, your
children become to a large extent what en
vironment makes them. A cheap lot in a
neighborhood of cheap lots is apt to mean
an Inferior class of neighbors who will
depreciate the value of your house because
of their proximity to It and will add noth
ing to the Joy of living through their so
cial intercourse. Buy a good lot in a
promising neighborhood and then wait a
year, If necessary, before you build on It,
Don't buy a lot of less than fifty foot
frontage. Always purchase a lot that will

which may be desired, to say nothing of
narrow rooms. It also means a too close
proximity to your neighbors which cuts off
the summer breeses, outlooks, makes your
family affairs public property and In

Answer So erroneously is the name ap
plied to various kinds of homes that the
average person has some doubts as to the
correot application of th. term. Correctly
speaking, a bungalow is a low roofed, one
story home with th. room, all arranged
on on. floor. For th. accommodation of
those who still adhere to the plan of
home on two floors, but at th. same time
admire the low roofed appearance and al
most rustic simplicity of the western bun
galow, designers have evolved a style of
house which they call 'the two-story bun
galow." They are, however, nothing more
than the story and a half cottage we have
been building for years, except that they
have some of the exterior characteristics
of the one-story bungalow which Is most
noticeable In the simple treatment and
wide projection of the cornice.
Question Is a full basement with foun
datlon advisable for a summer horn. In
th. bungalow style? How does the cost
of a bungalow compare with other styles
of homes?
Answer If the bungalow Is for summer
use only. It can be built on stone or brick
piers with a small "barrel" cellar, but if
for use the year round a full basement
Is to be preferred since the house will be
much warmer and a full basement costs
but little mora than a basement under
only part of th. house. Th. entire cos
of the excavation and foundation of any
house is not a large Item compared with
the total cost of the finished house. The
cost of a bungalow built for a northern
climate Is about' the same as a story and
a half cottage of the same number of
rooms.

Omaha realty dealers ended .the week In
a pleasant frame of mind. They had heard
of two more skyscrapers to be erected at
one and had observed that building per
mits for six months were 100 per cent
greater than those of last year, the exact
figures being- tl.Stt.K0 and tl.KH.H0.
With avery fact available proving that
Omaha Is prosperous and going ahead rap
idly, real estate men can and do argue to
possible customers that local property Is a
good Investment, and this applies as well
to suburban property as to central hold
ings. Business In the suburbs baa In fact
been as good as that In the business dis
tricts, though It has not received the same
general attention because not of so spec
tacular a nature.

No fear Is expressed by anyone that a
surplus of offices will result from the :.ew
offioe buildings which are going up. It Is
ealled to mind that a few of the faint
hearted expreesed fear when the Brandeis
btitldtng was under way that office build
ings already erected might suffer. But the
demand was greater than the supply before
the Brandeis building was actually com
pleted and for much time past now offices
of the most desirable kind and location
were simply not to be had.
Omaha la growing so fast that the same
condition la likely again to occur with
twelve months from now, with the result
that mora skyscrapers will be then under
taken. The same demand exists for desirable
houses and flats to rent, and tha number
of new apartment houses In construction
Is numerous. Houses to rent are not many
and are not staying vacant long when they
are such that It Is humanly possible to In
habit them.

Fifty Minneapolis real estate men and
their families will spend Wednesday in
Omaha, stopping here on their way to the
Seattle exposition. It would have been
more direct for them to have gone by the
Oreat Northern or Northern Pacific to the
coast, but the prospective visitors wished
to see Omaha and Denver. The party will
arrive here at 7 : a. m. The Omaha Real
Estate exchange has planned to entertain
those of the party who are realty dealers
at luncheon and will give the whole party
an automobile ride in the afternoon. B.
R. Hastings Is chairman of a committee
to entertain the visitors, C. F. Harrison,
Warren Blackwell and E. E. George being
the other members.

representing the Omaha exchange at the
convention of the National Real Estate
Dealers' aesociatlon. Ths meeting Is de
clared by them to have been more than

addresses were Joseph P. Day. a New
Torker who has done astonishingly well In
auctioning off whole new additions, and
Mr. Harmond ot the Woods-Harmond
company, which haa branches In thirty
four cities.

Gratefal Treat.
Now this U not a fish story la tha
popular sense of the term, but a truthful
recital of well-vouched-for facts, and If
any one does not believe it he can ask
the men who had the experience, John
Koerner, a Milwaukee alderman rather in
terested in base ball and West Baden
trips.
A year ago, when Koerner waa walking
by a little stream above the springs, ne
noticed a large rainbow trout feebly wrig
gling. Now, John had rheumatism a no he di
vined the cause of the fish's limp. He
reached for the creature, which, seeing
In Koerner a friend in need, allowed It
self to be caught.
John took the fish to ths hotel and put
It In one of the springs, and when In a
few weeks It became alive and spry, he
turned it loose in the stream again, first
marking It with a piece of silver wire.
This year, when John went to West Baden
again, he walked by the stream. He sud
