Wheat Market.
CHICAOO, III., June 28. Aw unexpectedly
liberal decrease In the world a vlsiulo sup
ply of wheat and bufcUsh foreign news in
spired considerable strength In the wheat
market here today, final quotations show
ing net galua of l'14o to 14U14c Corn
and provisions also closed firm, but oats
were easy.
The wheat market opened firm with prices
bp 4o to o compared with yesterday's tlnal
figures, tha Initial strength being largely
due to an unexpected advance of 4 to 4
pence at Liverpool. The failure of 'he
Liverpool market to respond to the slump
of a cent or more here on the previous
aeeslon was said to have been the result of
unfavorable crop conditions In France,
Uermany and Hungary.
Crop condltlona In this country, however,
were again extremely favorable, the
weather throughout the greater part of the
winter Wheat belt having become settled
and the offlolal forecast was for continued
fair weather. During e.ie first half hour
there waa quit general selling based on
the favorable outlook for the new crip,
vhlch caused considerable weakness, par
secularly p the July delivery., Fob. a. time
sentiment waa rather mixed, but toward
midday a string tone developed and prices
started upwards. A decrease of nearly
7.000,000 bushels In the world's avallablo
stocks was one of tha chief reasons for the
charge In sentiment. Other factors that
contributed to the upturn were lightor
country acceptance, large aales of cash
wheat to millers and an unconfirmed ru
mor of black rust In the wheat fields of
Minnesota. The market closed strong with
prices almost at the ton.
Corn was weak early In the day, but be
came firm during the final hour of the
session and closed at net gain of a shade
to half cent compared with yesterday's
final quotations.
Oats were weak all day. At tha close
prices were unchanged to o lower.
Provisions closed strong, with prices a
shade lower to 23Ho higher than yester
day's close.
The leading futures ranged aa follows:
Cora and Wheat Hegloa Balletla.

NEW YORK, June ). Such expansion of
activity and Interest as occurred in tne
day s stock market were traceable to the
dealings In the Industrial group and In a
number of specialties. Ilie growth of
activity came iroin the buying side of the
market and a fair showing 01 suusiaim
gains In prices ss the result.
Horn Its inceDilon amoiiKst the stocas
of a dormant and obscure classs, the de

dustrials, especially of those dealing In tne
metals and with later and 11101 a pro
nounced effect In United States steci. Tne
news In the market, such as it a8, fol
lowed thla movement Instead of preceding
them and this kept up the Impression ot
the narrow and protesslonal nature of
the market. Reading, meantime which
was practically the only prominent siock
which rose yesterday was held back
throughout the sesKion. The May state
ment of Reading earnings showed some
falling off in surplus compared with the
same month last year but the action ot
the stock win attributed rather 10 tha
effect of proflttaklng than to any posi
tive depression cauxed by the figures.
American sugar was prompt to rexpnnd
favorably to the pithlinhed reports that
the statute of limitations has not been
found to operate as a bar to the pro
posed criminal prosecution by the federal
authorities for the acts disclosed In the
Pennsylvania Refining eompuny's liti
gation. The advance In both classes of
the sugar stock were followed by Ameri
can beet sugar and then by a large
number of minor Industrials. The min
ing and smelting group was affected first
In the copper and smelting sections.
Keports of better conditions In the lead
market owing to the working down of
stocks on hand, the resulting prospects
of a rise In the price, were an Influence
In this movement. Use was made of ttie
claim that such an Improvement in the
lead market Is a usual precursor of an
Increase In demand for copper. The cop
per stocks consequently shared in the
strength caused by the lead adviceB al
though Immediate reports from tlv cop
per trade were less satlslacti and
prices of the metal declined ' London.
There was current again lit stock ex

of a proposed combination of a large num

States Steel corporation wbloh are con

ine reNM-rence 01 tnis rumor had ttie
eti-jrt of advancing the price of United
mates steel apparently from the belief
that suoh a combination If effected would
work In harmony with the big corpora
tion rather than In competition with it.
Oreater centralization of control would
be looked for from such an arrangement.
United States steel preferred shares In
strength of the common stock. This move
ment proved to be Impressive and affected
sentiment towards the whole market, al
though the list still failed to make a
comprehensive response. Money markets
are so little ruffled by the near approach
of the half yearly settlements that the
promise or sustained abundance has some
stimulating effect on the securities mar
ket. There were slight advances today In
ine private discount rate in mils and in
Berlin, but the rates In London receded
and the extreme ease of the New York
money market was undisturbed. The
rising tendency In the wheat market was
In face of highly encouraging advances
regarding the grain crops. The good
crop news was of some heln to stocks.
The large Influence of the notable Advance
In the steel stocks did not dissipate en

iHTTl.K-RerKinta ni cattle thla morning
were fairly liberal, 161 cars being reported
in. As has been the case on most days of
late, the great big bulk of the receipts con
sisted of cornfed steers, many of them
aood weurhtv cattle.
The mirkst was In verv much the same
condltlim as noted yesterday and the latter
part of last week. Buyers seemed to want
a tew light cattle, and anyuung mat, suiteu
them commanded about steady prices. They
also picked up a few heavy cattle at very
satisfactory prices, but the majority of the
heavy cattle anu everyming on tne piaui
order was very mucn negiecieo, 11 using
alnw market with a lower tendency. Buy
ers were about the moat particular ana
the hardest to please thaj they hava been
anv dav of late.
The number 01 cows ana neirers on saie
waa small and anything desirable along
that line commanded prices not materially
different from thone prevailing yesterday.
In fact, most salesmen Quoted tneir sne
siock as steady.
There were more feeders than have been
on sale most days of late. Still the supply
was quite small. What few cattle there
were sold quite readily at steady prices, as
high as ti.X) being paid for pretty good
cattle having some weight.

gocd quality commended fully steady
prices this morning and the market was
fa r y active on that Kind, un tne otner
hand, packing grades were sluw and gener
ally 6c lower. Taking tne market as
whole, It could hardly be called other than
dull, but still everything changed hands
In fa r season in the morning. A consider
able proportion of the hogs sold at 17 W(J
7.76 and on up as high as (7.8a for full
loads. A piece of a load reached 17. 90. It
wculd be well for shippers to understand
that buvers are 1 making quite a little dif
ference In the matter of quality. There Is
a rood shipping aemana at mis point,
which causes the better grades to command
a premium over less desirable loons.
SHEEP There was some Improvement
to the general tone of the trade on today's
market. It was'evldent from the opening,
however, that buyers had not discarded
their bear tactics and sales as a rule
showad more or less of a decline. Re
ceipts were moderate, consisting as usual
almost entirely of range stock.
While today a market was far from being
an Ideal seller's session, it must be re
membered that bearish pressure ot late
has been strong enough to fores declines
on arassers 01 as mucn as
quarter. Not Infrequently one day s
break on certain grades has - even
exceeded the quarter. In addition to
a demoralised prlca list, demand has been
unusually slack and the trade as a result
has exhibited very little life. The live
mutton market this morning la right
around weak to 15c lower than yesterday,
with spring lambs quotably steady.
Early trade waa slow, but as the morn
lnir rjroarresfied most of lhe pens were
cleared uo In reasonably good aeason.
In the California delegation yearling
wethers made 35.60. Bprlng lambs sold at
$8.00 and a string of choice breeder ewes
moved at 36.75. Tha demand for feeding
stock was rather backward and quality
waa nothlna extra on an average. Wyom
Ina- feeders were weighed up at 3360. A
small string of native spring lambs were
put over the scales at i ou.
