CHICAGO GRAIX AND PROVISIONS
Wheat Pricea Advance More Thaa
Two Cent Per Baahel.
CHICAGO. June 2B.-Whoat prlcea ad
vanced more than 2c per bushel today, ow
inu to general demand based on a sharp
bulge at Liverpool, and on reports of a
big export bualness. At tha oloae prlcea
were 2724o to 2tt above yeaterday'a
final figures. Corn, oata and provisions
also closed strong.
The wheat market was decidedly strong
all day, and at times tha volume of trade
was large. An advance of A to Id, at
IJverpool caused Initial gains here of e
to Pc and later prices were forced up
another cent or more on talk of an enor
mous amount of export business trans
acted on overnight bids at all grain cen
ters In this country. The bulge at Liver
pool waa aald to have been due ohlefly
to the congested condition of the July de
livery which. It waa claimed, waa brought
nhevit by manipulation by Chicago Inter
est a.
.Another factor that has considerable In
fluence In the strong opening here waa the
official rfrport on the winter wheat crop of
Cermany. w,hlch ahowed a deterioration of
' 18 points In the condition of the crop with
Inst year's crop at the corresponding time.
In the flnnl half of the dav Interest of pit
traders was centered In the export situa
tion when It was discovered that a large
amount of business had been dona over
tili;ht and In fact for several days. Exact
flKurcs were not obtainable, but It waa
learned that today's business exoeeded 100
boatloads, and some estimates placed the
amount as high as (00 loads. Crop news
was entirely Ignored. During the day the
July delivery sold between II .144 and 31 14.
The market closed active and strong, with
prices almost at the highest point, final
Quotations on July being at $1 lOTtQl.lt.
The corn market was bulllnhly affected
by the bulge In wheat. The market closed
strong, at almost the top, at net galna for
the duy of '.40 to a
Oats followed the course of other grain,
sentiment In the pit being bullish nearly
all day. The market closed strong, witn
prices Ho to 84c above yesterday s final
Quotations.
Provinlons were strong becaug of light
receipts of live hogs and Owing to the
bulge In train. At the close, prices were
up 24c to 27 Wo.
The leading futures ranged as follows:
The weather continues warm throughout
the corn and whes.t region. Rains were
again general In all portions, being heav
iest in tha northern portion.

NEW YORK, June 26. The action of the
stock market today was not Illuminating
In showing the state of financial settle
ment. The constant backing and filling
of prices indicated lack of conviction and
hesitation about pursuing a price move
ment In either direction. The reactionary
movement of the Union Paclflo stocks
rather discredited the rumors used to push
preferred stock suddenly to 110, and tna
publication of the plans of the Southern
I aclfic for merging and organising Its
Mexican properties aroused a suspicion
that this might be the matter that had
given rise to all the surmises of a coming
Harrtman financial plan.
The copper industrials were a center of
depression In the market, following the
London lead, where there was another
sharp decline In these securities after the
recent recovery brought about by short
covering. The price of the metal turned
downward again In London also. The In
fluence of the London market on New
York was Increased by the rumors cur
rent that an operator largely concerned
In Americans and coppers there waa In
trouble. London sold stocks here quite
freely during the morning.
The speculative contest that was going
on was waged Insistently In Reading, and
the erratic fluctuations In that stock kept
the whole market unsettled. Many thou
sands of shares were taken at last night's
prices after an opening In an effort to
hold It. A decline of a point and a period
of wavering fluctuations were followed
by a brisk advance, which placed it more
than two points above last night's price.
The publication of the preliminary esti
mates of the week's currency movement
was an Influence In lifting prices of
atocks. The promise of a large cash gain
gives assurances of resoureea to meet the
demands of the July l settlements, al
though the enormous Inflow of cash from
the interior from another point of view,
gives little sign of expanding demands for
the use of money In business.
The receipts of cash from the interior
seemed to have exceeded the shipments
by upwards of (10.000.000. the largest move
ment for- any one week of the season.
Deductions to be made are the (214,000
absorbed by subtreasury operations and
the gold exports 11. noo.ono to sontn Amer
lea early In the week and 11.000.000 engaged
today for export to France tomorrow". The
Paris cheque on London declined again to
day, but the London discount rate also
fell.
The gold movement from New York to
France Is not clearly understood, but re
cent purchases of United States Steel In
connection with the plan to list that stock
on the pans bourse were given as expia
nation for the check to the outward gold
movement. If the obstacles encountered
to that plan should Involve a return move
ment or the stock which passed, the inter
national exchange would be affected in
proportion. The expectation that the meas
ure for taxing net earnings of corpora
tions would appear In the senate today
had some repressive effect on the dealings
In stocks. A few specialties showed Iso
lated strength due to particular causes.
The price movement was confused to the
end.
Bonds were steady. Total sales, par
value, 35.5M.000. United States 4s regis
tered declined Vi per cent and the coupon
H per cent on call.
Number of sales and leading quotations
on stocks were as follows:

Business Is a little more quiet this week
as a result of the comparatively limited

an early resumption of buying in the raw
material market at full and rising prices.

CATTLE Receipts of cattle this morning
were very small, only thirty-seven cars
being reported in, making the total for the
week the smallest that It has been in some
time and slightly smaller than for th cor
responding week of last year.
With only thirty-seven cars all told on
sale, there were not enough beef steers to
make very much of a market. At the
same time th supply was plenty large
enough to meet the requirements of buy
ers. Tidy light cattle of good quality were
In fair request at ateady price, but heavy
cattle, as ha been the case all the week,
were alow and hard to move. For the
week to date, th best light cattle on th
yearling order are lfrjj 26c higher, but heavy
cattle have shown very little it any Im
provement. Possibly prime heavy might be
a little higher than the low spot last week,
but the plain heavy can safely be called
no more than steady.
Cows and heifers were In very light sup
ply and the demand was fair, and few on
sale changing hand at good, strong prices
There were no stockers or feeders of any
eonnequence on rale and th market wa
without noteworthy change.

HOOH Fhlnnsrs wanted onlte a number
of hogs this morning and they were forced
to pay advance amounting on an average
to about 10c over yesterday' price for the
kind that they wanted. The market on
good chipping grades was fairly actlv and
the moat of th hog of that description
old early In th morning. As was the
case yesterday packers were not quite such
active buyers and common, light, mixed
packers were only about SlilOe higher, with
the market closing rather weak and slow.
A Urge proportion of all the hot sol.1
lnld th rang of $7.4&ii7.69 and on up a
high as $7.70 for prim heavy. Today'
advance make up for all of tha weakness
developed yesterday and more, too, but the
market I still around UVkc lower than It
was esnv in th week.
SHEEP Today's receipts were nil and, of
course, there waa no market to test value.
The live mutton market during th weak
at this point has been one of constantly
declining values. Oraesers from Oregon.
Idaho and I'tah range have made up the
bulk of aupplie and the total rer-elpta for
th four days exceed last week's official
count by 1,000 head. Receipts for the cor
responding week of last year exceed this
week nv mutton aupply by about 6.001
head Th frt that there waa onlv a
limited sprinkling of fed stock shipped In
this week indicates thst practically all of
last year' crop ha been marketed and
that buying Interests must look to the
range fiotn now on for their mutton. The
quality and quantity of this week's sup
plies, ss well. Is almost a sure Indlrstlon
that the range mutton crop has been
stsrted marketward in earnest.
The trend of value this week has been
somewhat disappointing to selling talent
In view of the fact that live mutton has
been selling at a premium for the last few
weeks. The decline, however, has not been
confined to this market and valuea at
other pointa have been punished equally
severely. The lower prices paid this week
Is largely a reflection of uncertain senti
ment In buying circle. Buyer as a gen
eral rule are somewhat at sea as to the
proper level of grass mutton when the
advance guard puts In its appearance at
market, and thla year has been no ex
ception to the rule. In order to be on the
right side of the fence a decline In valuea
Is their only safe and conservative route.
The transitory stage between fed stuff and
grassera has already been passed and a
smoother market may be expected from
this time on.
Th total decline on rang sheep and
yearllnga this week has been right Around
g0c, with fed sock and spring lambs
quotably ateady with last week.
