CHICAGO GRAIX AND PROVISIONS Wheat Prices Persistently Seek Low Water Mark. CHICAGO, June 23 Water does not seek a lower level more persistently than have wheat prices bn the board of trade here recently, and the market today was no exception to the rule, final quotations be ing &) to o below yesterday's close. Corn, oats and provisions followed wheat on the toboggan slide and closed weak. The wheat market was a weak affair all day, and prices continued their down ward course, the regularity of which Is becoming decidedly monotonous to those of bullish proclivities. The principal fac tor was the Increasing likelihood of an abundant harvest In the United Slates and Canada, as Indicated In numerous dis patches received from all sections of the wheat bolt. According to these reportH, a good yield of winter wheat Is now almost assured, while the spring-sown crop Is de veloping rapidly under most favorable con ditions. . The predicted arrival of new wheat In Chicago next week also prompted considerable selling, particularly of the July delivery. Cables were off o to o, and reports from continental Europe claimed uVaV harVestlhg- had begun in' the principal wheat-producing districts In southern Europe. . There was some cover ing by shorts at the start, owing to addi tional rains in Missouri ana nansas, nut the demand was soon satisfied, and prices started on a steady decline. The volume of trade was small. The range for the J'uly delivery was between fl.l27fci&L13 and 11.14(tfL14. ' The market closed weak, with July at $1.13. I'ronounccd weakness developed In the corn market, and prioes at the close showed losses of VtfHc to llfco, com pared with th final quotations of the pre vious session. The market closed weak, at the bottom. Bright prospects for the new crop formed the basis of the selling pressure in the oats market, which resulted in a heavy tone throughout the entire session. The market closed weak, at net declines of c to fiic. l'i ovlKlons - were weak all day. At the close, prices were" a shade to 30o lower. June 2C.-The Intense dull ness of today's stuck market served to obscure the Importance of the price move ments which were remarkable In several cases. The general firmness of the mar ket's tone was Influenced by sympathy with the notnhle streng'h in these spec ial stocks, but more distinctly by the tech nical factors In the position. The conclws lon of the London flock market settlement with no casualties as a rost.lt of the heavy declines since the preceding settlement re moved a cause of apprehension and brought In some Important buying of stocks here from that source. The movement that attracted most notice In the day's market was that in Union Pa cific preferred, which moved to a record price and one out of line with Its in vestment return compared at the current money market. Rumors of an lnlerttlon to retire the stock were given to account fur its rise. It Is supposed that the pur pose to retire stock would be to avoid the embarrassment of claims from the pre ferred stockholders share In a distribu tion of Investment holding by the company of other shares. Such distribution was under official discussion at one time when the company was under scrutiny for al leged violation of the Interstate Com merce law In holding those shares. The company has no explicit right reserved to retire the preferred stock at a fixed price as was the case with Southern Pacific preferred and it was assumed, therefore, that a plan must bo attractive to preferred stockholders to Induce their acceptance. The day's rumors had to do with a sup posed offer of one share of Union Pacific common stock for two shares of the pre ferred stock with rights of conversion Into' common stock, presumably at a price above the current market quotations. Ihcre was nothing like official confirmation or coun tenance for these rumors, but they were extremely effective with Union Pacific and revised consideration ol various oiner ocai rumors. Thla, was of effect in advancing Wabash preferred, Reading, New York Central, Atchison and others which have been the subject of deal rumors. A divi dend guarantee for Wabash preferred, In return for control by some other com pany; a segregation of assets and an In creased dividend for Reading; a compre hnnsivo holding comnanv for the Vander- bllt railroads; Pennsylvania control- of Atchison; such were some of the stock market rumors which came to life again In the day's dealing. American Woolen, preferred, declined sharply on .the reported sale of additional preferred stock by the company. . The pronounced dullness which hub uu- veloped in the demand lor ctuper u responsible for tne DBcuwaranc ui u.r tnrka of Conner companies. A good deal of discussion was heard of the movement to seoure the enactment of the corporation earning vtax and Washington reports m statements of earnings by the corporations were to furnish the basis for the tax were claimed as promise of sotiening or tin- terms which was reared ai urtti m powers or inquisition uuo go with the proposed law. HOGS Conditions were all against the sellers of hogs thla morning. I'ork broke 60c yesterday and opened way lower again this morning. That of Itself was suffi cient to create a decidedly lower hog mar ket, but In addition to that bear feature was the further fact that receipts at all points vrere very liberal, giving buyers a good opportunity to pound values. As a result the market at this point opened very slow, with buyers announcing right at the outset that they must have a concession of at least ISc as compared with yesterday. Mote than that, they were In no special hurry to buy the hogs even at the decline, feeling that possibly a little delay might cause a still further reaction In the pro vision market and all additional decline In hogs. Thus it happened that the trade all morning wnn very slow and dull, buyers being Indifferent and sellers working to the best of their ability to maintain values. SHEEP Receipts were -comparatively .u i M Ihte mnrnlntf anil pnnul r.A fllmimt ie'S 1 entirely of range stock, fresh oft the grass. , They were practically an yearlings ana ( -vethers, eleven cars from Oregon, five , cars from idano ana a coupie ot loans ot Utah nativity. Buyers were not at all qualmish In mak ing the most of the situation from the opening and as a result not a wheel was turned until well along tn the morning. It was not only impossible to find a mar ket for live mutton at nominally steady prices, but was almost aa difficult to dis pose of supplies at a fairly liberal decline. As a result the trade vas exceedingly slow and nothing much had been weighed up until 11 o'clock in the morning. When grassers finally did begin to change hands It was an admitted victory for buy ing Interests, with prices a flat quarter lower than yesterday. A few loads of feeding wethers held over from yesterday sold at 15.00 and range yearlings that were good enough to register at to.30 yesterday made only $6,000 totlay. A small string of western spring lambs sold at a quotably ateady price, S8.00. The reasons for today's big break In values are obvious. The market on ranire sheep of late has been in Its initiatory stage and, ot course, the trade has been frothy and prices unsettled. With the first run of any consequence with which- to text values, buyers have forced down the value level to norma) basis and, of course, the break Is more noticeable. Another ruling factor Is the generally conceded top heavy condition ot the range sheep market at this point lately. South Omaha prices have been too high as compared with those at other points. The eastern mutton market, as well, has practically gone to pieces and everything combined has caused packing interests lo become extremely bearish in their views.
