NEW YORK STOCKS AND BONDS
Beart Circulate Rumor That' Karri
man if Fatally 111.
DISCREDITED BY UNION 'PACIFIC
Reports Prom Paris About United
States Steel Action Has Effect of
Berlins V nines Story of tho
Day In Stock Market.
NEW YORK, June 21. It took several
hours of wailing tactics on the part uf
professional operators amongst the opera
tions in stocks to demonstrate today then
satisfaction that the sharp fall In prices
last week bad not attracted any demand
sufficient to form a basis for a renewed
upturn In prices.
1 he smash which followed was more
severe than on last Thursday. Selling was
almost as constrained during the eariy
part of the day as was buying, wlUi the re
sult of dullness and lisilessness such as
have not been seen for weeks In the trad
ing. The bears still found tffective ma
terial for Influencing sentiment in the fears
of bad effects to follow the failure to se
cure admission for the Untied States Sled
stocks to the Paris Bourse, The direct
opposition between the reports said to be
received by private bankers regarding the
standing of the plan, and tho assertions
of the banking interests ro.ircr ie,1, did
not prevent the reports of the failure of
the project from hurting values. Selling of
United States Steel also carried the im
pression of liquidation of some impoi'ant
individual accounts.
The same appearance in the Wabish. se
curities served to throw suspicion on the
active advance which has been effected In
those stocks on vague Intimations of Im
portant developments, said to be impending,
but which have entirely failed of authen
ticity. Amalgamated copper also proved
acutely weak and the over-speculation
abroad In coppers left the reactionary ten
dency there still In force. The progress of
the decline brought out added efforts on
the part of the bears, shown by their raid
ing tactics and by the circulation of un
founded rumors.
One of these rumors was the effect
that E. H. Ittrrlman had suffered a sud
den and fatal seisure In Vienna. This
rumor was put out late In the session of
the stock market, and was not traceable to
any authoritative source, but It proved ex
tremely effective, notwithstanding the
prompt discredit thrown upon It by Union
Pacific officials, who would have Immedi
ate advice of any happening to the head
of the system owing to the frequency of
cable communications from the traveler
with his business associates.
The sharp rallies, whloh followed the
successive drops, were e Idence of the
part plaved by short selling in the weak
ness. This rule did not apply, however,
to the final break, In which the Harrl
man storks played the principal part, the
selling movement being still , In active
progress when the trading ended. A rally
of a point In Southern Pacific was the
only notable Indication of a check to the
movement.
Foreign exchange ror.e strongly to within
a few points of the highest point of tho
season and experts computed a good profit
on exports of gold to London at the pre

amount of Interest. The trade tpened slow
and quiet; a Utile sprinkling of hugs sold
early at prices that looked tvak to a little
lower than Saturday. As tha trade warmed
up. however, the market shewed Improve
ment, making prices generally about
steady. In fact, there was not enough
change in any direction to be worth quot
ing. A considerable proportion of all the
hoKs sold at 87.5547.75 and on up as high as
87-5 for the best heavy hogs. While the
trade was at no time especially active,
practically everything had chanced hands
by 10 o'clock in the morning or soon after.
SHEEP The bulk of receipts this morn.
Ing were grass-feds from Idaho and Ore
gon, mostly yearlings. The market opened
slow and buying talent was decidedly
backward In getting Into the name. When
they finally did get busy. It was on a 15
25c lower basis on range stock.
While there were but few fed westerns,
such aa were on sale brought nominally
steady prices. Fed yearlings brought 17 2",
the name as was paid last Friday for year
Unas of the same kind.
Oregon grassrs showed the greatest de
cline of all, but this feature of today's
market Is partially explained In the fact
that fleeces were wa'. and bt.; ors. of course,
were Inclined to v.l'.l ti). ax with mot
energy. Yearlings 'list fold liiht week for
86.25 on Thursday and 86 25 on Friday, were
only able to reach 86.00 this morning, a
flat decline under Isst week's close. Th
general market, however, could not ba
called at a quarter break owing to tho
varied assortment of supplies. Orassers,
as a rule, moved at prices 15fB)26e lower
than last week with fed stuff steady. Idaho
yearlings brought 8600. Receipts were
moderate.
