of New York,
NEW YORK. June It? A distinguished
body of e-cleslnstlca ami laymen attended
the ninth council of the Alliance of Re
formed churcl.es of the Prrsbytilan system
here today. Of the more than 300 delegates,
nearly cne-thlrd have come from Europe.
The opening sermon wss delivered this
afternoon by Dr. James P. Moffett, presi
dent ot Washington and Jefferson uni
versity, snd was followed by the business
organization. ..
In addressing the alliance tonight, Pr.
Dykes, the president, commended efforts
of clergymen t keep pace with the times
and changing conditions. He touched upon
the labors in the missionary field, advis
ing a combination of all Christian forces
In the work.
"The five years since our last confer
ence 'n Liverpool, bas brought many
changes." sali Dr. Dykes. "Silent changes
heve been paslng over the face, of the
world and the altered social conditions call
fot novel applications of the old thought.
"There his been a material revolution.
Through scterce the world has contracted
before our eyes. Along with this "there
has come s moral drawing together of
man to man and a quickened sense of hu
man brotherhood. All this pressages re
sults unforseen and unforseeable and may
be Interpreted as the universal spread of
Christianity. But we need the unity and
cohesion of all Christian forces. Only by
this means can our dreams come true."
After Dr. Dykes' address a reception of
the delegates was held . In the chapel of
the church, closing the first day's activ
ities. E. Clarence Jones, president of the re
cently formed American Embassy associa
tion, an organization of New Tork bank
ers and business men, which hopes to per
suade congress to buy suitable residences
for the country's .ambassadors In each of
the greater European capitals, sailed on
the Kron Prlnzess Cecille today for a tour
of continental Europe.
In the course of his trip he plans te
ascertain how far the average living ex
penses of American diplomats abroad ex
ceed the salaries and to learn the approxi
mate appropriation necessary for the pui
chase of adequate ambassadorial homes In
each capital. In a statement issued be
fore starting, Mr. Jones said:
"It is well known that nowadays, a man
of moderate Income, however well he may
be fitted for a diplomatic post, is unable
to accept the honor. As a result It some
times appears that a man's only qualifi
cation for these posts is the extent of his
bank account and his influence at Wash
ington. We need a different type of a
man. Our country 1b too vast and Influ
ential to have its affairs entrusted to car
pet knights whose entertainments smack
of a vulgar ostentation of wealth. Ths
Embassy association Is convinced that the
mercantile Interests of ths country are
suffering under present standards."

STORIES
PAN FRANCISCO, Cal., June IS. Analy
sis of the testimony and , review s of evi
dence In the CalhiMin t-asej ended today,
when A. A. Moore, senior counsel for Pat
rick Calhoun, began thp latter half ot his
argument against the charge of bribery
against the president of the Vnlted rail
road. Alexander King of Aalia. Oa..
devoted nearly five, hours) to a -dispassionate
survey of the case from the stand
point of the defendant, -and concluded In
time to give Mr. Mbsre two hbura for his
Introduction. ' i i
Mr. Moore's remark tinrred with tho
utmost sarcasm and bitterness, and were)
first directed to the , Iyme'nt of the chief
prosecutor's office expenses by Rudolph
Spreckels and thee, to, portions of Mr.
O'Oats's address -f yesterday. '" i
Mr. Mooro opened with a declaration that
the defendant had answered "ready" on
forty occasions followlag the return of
seven lndiotment against Tilm In 1907. ant)
that he had once been refused a hearing
because, as he satd, "tho hired proser-titor,
who works for famV; or glory", or hione,
or all, had elms. mi to Jet James LM'Oalla
gher, his chief witness, leave the state."
Roast for Prosecution.
"I am sorry to note In' Mr. O Gara's dis
course the tendency, of the prosecution to
claim that the rich . are appifsalnw the
poor, that streets are stolen and bribery
committed and that you should therefore
convict tills defendant, It was unworthy
ot counsel and the poorest kind of policy.
When he turned to us and said "No one
of that crowd Is 'tit' to r'uH' th shoes of
Francis J. Ileney,' It was something no
prosecution should have said- The poorest
bootblack In Sao Francisco Is well quali
fied to rub Mr. Henry's' shoes, ur his
head, if occasion should arise. '
"Any case that has to depend on matter
so Insulting to any. man,, so servile ami
so Indecent In Its reference, that needs
must fill the avenues of this. c(ty. with
gum-shoe men and pistol men- and hatchet
men, such a those :wk,it. behind Mr.
Heney, is a bogus case.
"This Is the first .time in history that
a prosecuting officer has been appointed
to office by a parson with property Inter
ests at stake and has served without pay
to prosecute another citizen.. The. evidence
shows that ho and his partners received
102,000 from this - patron, and that Mr.
Heney, individually, received 923,000 in two
years for office expenses, if you like, tut
923.0UO Is $23,000. Unfortunately, if honor
ably, more humble members of the profes
sion pay their own office expenses,"
Mr. Moore's argument is expected to oc
cupy tomorrow's session ot court. He will
be followed by Mr. Heney. . The ease prob
ably will go to the Jury Friday.
Lawyer King's -Address.
Alexander King ot Atlanta, Ga., who
crossed the continent' to -assist In the de
fense of Calhoun, wltlj whom h was once
associated in legal practice, opened the
argument In behalf ot his client today.

daughters seated in full view ot the jury,
the president of the United Railroads- fol

"I warn you against the .atmosphere of
suspicion with which the prosecution has
enveloped this case," said Mr. King In his
opening. "You must, try it on proof alone
