June 15 An effective ele ment of the professional operators In stntjk perfected a sufficient organisation ana gathered aufflclent courage today to at tack prices of stocks with vigor and de termination and met with success In pre cipitating a sharp fall In rtrlcea. Th weakness of the market waa attributed quite generally to technical catisea. The rushing Into prominence of a miscellan eous lot of obscure specialties Is consid ered a bad sign of tho health of the speculation". . There was a withdrawal of buying orders prevailing and placed In limits slightly below the market price aylth the determin ation to take advantage of a possible re action in what waa supposed to he a strong market. With the reaction In force this determination Is relinquished In many cases, no small sentimental effect being produced on today's market by the vio lent decline In American sugar. The steady dividend record of that stock) of late has thrown It Into a class of quiet trading stocks to whlr-h speculators have paid little attention. The market for It has become a narrow one nnd it took comparatively light sales today to break the price eight points. The disclosures In connection with the Pennsylvania Sugar company's suit, both of the busiresa methods of the American Sugar Refining company and the heavy payments being made for settlement of litigation, were the causes of today'a violent decline. The reports of the activity Into which the government authorities are being stirred by the disclosures Is feared as a possible prelude to other actions against corpora tions under the anti-trust laws. It was from this side that the sentimental Influ ence of the break In susar was of most effect on the general market The firmer tone developed In the meal money market has served to bring out ad ditional supplies, as from Interior banking communities. .The constant expansion In the local loan account, the additional re quirements : ahead from , further' bond ls sues, and the nearer approach of the crop movenment period combine to suggest cau tion In tha over extension of credits In holding stocks at high price levels. The reiterated reports of a hitch In the arrangements for dealing In United States steel on the Paris bourse have aroused nine distrust, In spite of the assurances so often repeated from the banking Inter ests concerned that the project was pro ceeding successfully. Some effect was pro duced also by the official Intimation that, the Chicago. Milwaukee A Sf. Paul would act In an Independent way In the matter of rates on Its Pacific Coast extension. Home of the sellers of stocks professed apprehension that the publication of the report of Gov. Hughes commission on the exchanges would hv an unfavorable effect on the market. Receipts were very light, the demand was backward and the trade waa excep tionally alow from tha opening. A lower market resulted, with the northwestern grassers, of course, the most conspicuous Invalids. While there were only a few cars of Oregons. hardly enough to make a mar ket, tbe early sales Indicated that values were fully a quarter lower than yesterday. Wethers that sold yesterday at 46.50 brought only tha even nickel today. While the decline on this particular sale appears to be a half-dollar under yesterday, the general opinion la that Oregon sold a quar ter too high yesterday. With only a sprinkling of fed western stock, values on this class of stock were ot given a fair test. As a consequence f"d western sheep are nominally steady. Uie claim being iha beef on hooks at South Omaha wan costing more In proportion than at any other point. As a result they were bidding prices that were at least 10c lower and In some cases worse than that. In fact, If they could not get a reduction oi as much as 10c, they did not appear to want the cattle at all, and they did not seem overly anxious for aupplle even at the decline. The result was that the morn ing waa well advanced before enough cattle had changed hands to 2make any sem blance ot a market. There were only a few cows and heifers In the yards this morning, and they com manded prices that were not very much different from yesterday. At least the better grades sold very nearry steady. In ferior and grass kinds were more or less neglected, being slow and dull throughout. There were hardly enough stockers or feeders on the market to cut much of a figure and the change in values was not enough to talk about. Packers, on the other hand, were slow to follow tha pace set by shippers, but they bought quite a sprinkling of hogs at prices ranging any where from steady to 5c higher. They were not very anxious for supplies even on that basis, with a result thai the mar ket soon eased off, the advance being .oat and the trade becoming very slow and weak. Still, tha hogs kept selling and the bulk of the receipts changed hands In fair seaaon, most of the hogs selling at $7 Gvif 7.65. It might ba added that the strength shown in the market this morning carries prlcea to the highest point touched so far this year. Il would ba well for shippers to recall that this ia the season of the year when grass hogs begin arriving at tha market, and when- packers begin discriminating very strongly against that kind on aa count of their heavy shrinkage on the block. It would be well for shippers to bear In mind this fact, as receivers of grass hogs tha last few days have found It hard work to secure a buyer even at decidedly reduced prices as compared with dry-lot stuff.
